Three years later the 3 H1s hired to replace me (but couldn't do the job properly) were sent back to India, and I was rehired. I can reinforce that anecdote, from an extended family member who was forced to retire from IBM, because he was somehow considered behind on the latest tech. IBM then had to pay him to train the H1B imports at a higher pay scale, because their imported talent was woefully undereducated. He continued to work for IBM as a consultant for another decade, *while receiving retirement benefits*. He made a shit-ton of money, but he hated IBM for their corporate stupidity. They laid off a large number of qualified Americans, in order to avoid paying seniority, retirement and tax obligations, or spending even one red cent on training new hires out of college. HR people couldn't understand why my salary was so much more than theirs, and I would explain that it was because I could outperform any 4 of them and get it done faster - and right - the first time. They never learned, and it's why I never had loyalty to ANY employer because of it. Toward the latter part of my career, I formed a corporation around myself and hired myself out to them (to do the same effing job) at 3x the billing rate, and I was _still_ cleaning up the messes left by H1B's.

As someone who has a PhD in a STEM field, I find that exchange both wrong and typical of a tech bro. Yes, there’s a STEM shortage. But, also an exploitation of the program to suppress wages. I am a retired engineer. I worked in the USA, with Indian engineers from TATA and other firms. They were better book learned than we are in the USA. But they had zero creativity and could only work in very clearly defined projects with little ambiguity. After, working on projects in the USA many changed, they became really great engineers with all the tools we needed them to have. At best it took 2 years, some it took 5, and some returned to India because they could not adapt. Musk, is a top down, guy, his way or the highway, non-native engineers are easier to boss, and he does not want creativity at the lowest levels, he wants compliance. This is why he wants foreign help.
Toward the end of my plastics career, the trend was outside hires, without hands-on plastic experience, for stupidvisors. I was not bashful about telling management: "Hell, I can make a foreman/shift supervisor out of a molding tech in six months. I MIGHT be able to make a molding tech out of a stupidvisor in six YEARS".
The issue isnt a skills issue. The US produces some of the best engineers available in the world. The problem that Musk and his ilk are facing; they have to pay them US wages. H1B visa abuse was rampant in the early 00's under W. Bush and even into Obama's term. There was a crackdown that forces companies to actually use the H1B visa program as it was intended; not as a skirt around to hire cheaper labor to run their businesses. Something especially important to note here: Musk is *NOT* an engineer. He's a mediocre programmer at best. He is not an authority on what constitutes good engineering.

I was laid off as a software engineer and replaced by H1's, ostensibly because there were no citizens (me...) who could do the job. Three years later the 3 H1s hired to replace me (but couldn't do the job properly) were sent back to India, and I was rehired. H1s are just a way for corporate America to pay lower salaries and no benefits. Everyone knows this, yet our elected representatives continue to turn a blind eye to the situation. On this one narrow issue I actually agree with the MAGAmorons, and I am somewhat left of Bernie. Keep up the good work and regards to Beau.
I can reinforce that anecdote, from an extended family member who was forced to retire from IBM, because he was somehow considered behind on the latest tech. IBM then had to pay him to train the H1B imports at a higher pay scale, because their imported talent was woefully undereducated. He continued to work for IBM as a consultant for another decade, *while receiving retirement benefits*. He made a shit-ton of money, but he hated IBM for their corporate stupidity. They laid off a large number of qualified Americans, in order to avoid paying seniority, retirement and tax obligations, or spending even one red cent on training new hires out of college. They reaped what they sowed. The tech bros are spewing a load of crap about educated Americans, because it makes them appear smarter and richer, while they undermine our country with indentured H1B foreigners.

@@ruthslone2992 Agreed to both you and trainguy55-f6q. I was a software engineer for DoD and then Wall St for 40 years. On several occasions, they replaced me with -less expensive- younger H1Bs. HR people couldn't understand why my salary was so much more than theirs, and I would explain that it was because I could outperform any 4 of them and get it done faster - and right - the first time. They never learned, and it's why I never had loyalty to ANY employer because of it. Toward the latter part of my career, I formed a corporation around myself and hired myself out to them (to do the same effing job) at 3x the billing rate, and I was _still_ cleaning up the messes left by H1B's.
And tech workers are famously against unionization over fears that it lets sub-par workers coast.
Leave it to supposed leftists to behave and talk like bitter right wing protectionists when they've priced themselves out of job competitiveness. It's a basic lesson of business , if you can hire someone to do something for less than someone else more expensive , that warrants at least a shot. It sounds terrible and it sucks but that's a fundamental truth in business of any kind. The world is global economy now , which means the price and wages of many fields that can be done remotely are gonna be measured by international and not domestic pay standards relative to other nations populations purchasing power parities. That's the price of a world economy
As someone who has a PhD in a STEM field, I find that exchange both wrong and typical of a tech bro. Yes, there’s a STEM shortage. But, also an exploitation of the program to suppress wages. Some of those people here on visas are working 80 hours a week for less than they should be paid because of the visa status.

I've noticed a lot of colleges have agreements w/ businesses, creating a sort of pipeline where students are scooped up before they graduate. without a degree they have less power negotiating a fair salary, also suppressing wages

Maybe some of it is just floating ideas to see what they can get away with. I'm quite content to see them picking each other off, however I am troubled by the amount of power unelected Musk has.
I am a retired engineer. I worked in the USA, with Indian engineers from TATA and other firms. They were better book learned than we are in the USA. But they had zero creativity and could only work in very clearly defined projects with little ambiguity. After, working on projects in the USA many changed, they became really great engineers with all the tools we needed them to have. At best it took 2 years, some it took 5, and some returned to India because they could not adapt. Musk, is a top down, guy, his way or the highway, non-native engineers are easier to boss, and he does not want creativity at the lowest levels, he wants compliance. This is why he wants foreign help.
Toward the end of my plastics career, the trend was outside hires, without hands-on plastic experience, for stupidvisors. I was not bashful about telling management: "Hell, I can make a foreman/shift supervisor out of a molding tech in six months. I MIGHT be able to make a molding tech out of a stupidvisor in six YEARS".
He can also use and abuse those imported workers because they can’t go to another employer. It’s work for Musk or go home

The issue isnt a skills issue. The US produces some of the best engineers available in the world. The problem that Musk and his ilk are facing; they have to pay them US wages. H1B visa abuse was rampant in the early 00's under W. Bush and even into Obama's term. There was a crackdown that forces companies to actually use the H1B visa program as it was intended; not as a skirt around to hire cheaper labor to run their businesses.
Something especially important to note here: Musk is *NOT* an engineer. He's a mediocre programmer at best. He is not an authority on what constitutes good engineering.
