The black chicken comes from a breed called a "Silkie". It's feathers are white and it's skin is a grayish black colour. I'm not sure what I was expecting but the "Hippo" surprised me. Neat, tidy, well packaged food, tons of variety, nice wide aisles and lots of light. Most of the food is a bit less expensive than it is here in Ontario, Canada except the chips, Barilla, baked beans and sauce and they are about the same price. That was a lovely education, thanks.💛

Beijing is a "first-tier city" and capital of China. So, the prices are like what Washington DC or Manhattan prices are in USA. Only Shanghai and parts of Shenzhen would have higher prices. But, if you go anywhere else in China to like the 2nd, 3rd or 4th tier cities, the prices for restaurant food is astoundingly low. I would love a supermarket like that. Ours are becoming more and more processed foods and ready made meals. Fresh is still available but not to the same extent. This supermarket is amazing. Can you consider adding the price in AUD for us Aussies as well in future videos?
Generally the prices seem lower than the UK apart from some imported brands. The thing that surprised me was the quality and range on offer - much more than the UK, especially meat and fish. Also there seemed to be less processed foods and even some of the snacks were natural products. Its interesting that they also cook food instore - the closest thing to that in the UK is some of our farm shops that have restaurants. Overall, I would say that the Chinese have a much better diet than we do in the UK, comparing the range of food on offer.

This is very informing. Lot of their prices are lower than here in the states for some of their foods. I wonder why they wrap the food in a net like the apples and other goodies? I love that they can recook your food for you. As you said to eat there or to take with you. Saves time for cooking at home. And some people live in very small apartments in China so having to save from cooking helps them out big time. I wish stores did this here in the states. Wow! there milk is way less than here in the states. For a gallon here you pay as high s 5 dollars at places for regular milk. Anything else is even more expensive. That Australian wagyu beef would cost more than double in Australia and most likely those lobsters were imported into china. China ceased importing Australian lobster because of previous Australian prime minister being an idiot with the Chinese, anyway that was good because we could buy them even supermarkets had them but they were always frozen never fresh. The Chinese get the best and freshest produce, Australians get the left overs must be because we have a small population.

Fresh market where you can fresh vegetables, fresh meats, chicken, fish, duck, pig meat, cow meat, etc, any kind of fresh fruits all at 1/2 price or 1/4 the price you see in a mega super market like this one. The taste of food cooked with fresh ingredients much much better than those packaged and refrigerated or frozen ones.

8% of people in the UK are lactose intolerant whereas the figure for China is 92%. In Russia it varies per republic but it's between 13% and 57%. That's probably why not much dairy products are drunk or eaten in China (and Asia in general).

There is one supermarket brand in the US, Wegmans, that has in-store dining areas. I used to live in Rochester, NY for a few months and I loved the Wegmans there. But the variety shown in this video is unmatched even by Wegmans.
Honestly as a local grown up in Beijing, I don’t recommend Beijing as a place to experience family life. Maybe Guangdong or Shanghai is better. Because of most of the Beijing people they don’t enjoy life and live a fast pace life. Beijing is full of famous universities. Those Beijing local they are highly educated but live a tired life.
However, if you want to experience those ancient spiritual heritage, Beijing is the best place. There are a variety of performances like ancient dance dramas, Beijing opera. You can also experience many traditional handicrafts. But those are hidden in the normal streets, not well known even local people.
盒马鲜生 is a relatively high-end grocery store. So fancier decorations, more services, better quality control of the goods, etc. and of course at higher prices. You saw, for example, the chicken with black skin, and that is a certain breed called silkie chicken which is considered to have certain value in terms of traditional Chinese medicine. Such chicken goes best with other ingredients of medical value like cordyceps militaris to make a soup, but people don't necessarily want to pay extra for it to make an everyday meal. It is common for a person to only buy certain items he/she prioritizes at a store like this and gets other items at stores that are more cost-effective. Additionally, Chinese can have much more exquisite discrimination between ingredients than the factory-standardized measures a lot of westerners are more used to. So, randomly picking an item can give you misleading idea about how grocery cost in China compare to in another country. By the way, kiwi fruits actually originates in China and there are domestic kiwi fruits being sold by lower price.
Yes, kiwi fruit is originally the Chinese Gooseberry. I don't think many ordinary Chinese people would be able to shop in this high-end store. I've been watching a lot of Chinese videos about the struggles of the population. Thousands barely get enough to eat.

The live fish (etc) selection is pretty damned good. And that conveyor system is pretty sweet. My local shop (major retailer) has 1/10th the live selection and no fancy belt system ;)
If I remember it correctly, Mainland China is the biggest alcohol consuming region in the world, more than three times bigger than the second, so of course you can find all kinds of imported alcoholic products. China also imports and consumes huge amount of all kinds of products, the world's biggest market to most industries, but except cheese and olive oil I guess. lol

Hema is actually one of nicer supermarkets, people with low income won't go there. they have more affordable options, other supermarkets, convenience stores, local wet markets or bazaars, or nearby farmers would drive into the city and sell veges or fruits they grow in their gardens.

I think most of the world gets avocados from Mexico. I live in Southern California where avocados are grown. Avocados in local markets are from Mexico. Our avocados are sent to New York.

Hema Fresh (盒马鲜生) is a mid-to-high-end supermarket chain in China. The fruits and vegetables it offers are organically certified and supplied from its exclusive farms. However, they are still much cheaper compared to those in the United States or Europe. It is comparable to the organic fruits and vegetables available at Marks & Spencer in the UK.
That Australian wagyu beef would cost more than double in Australia and most likely those lobsters were imported into china. China ceased importing Australian lobster because of previous Australian prime minister being an idiot with the Chinese, anyway that was good because we could buy them even supermarkets had them but they were always frozen never fresh. The Chinese get the best and freshest produce, Australians get the left overs must be because we have a small population.
Don’t think your the only ones British fish goes to Spain, not many fishmongers left in UK. The EU want the fishing quotas…really hot topic…

Fresh market where you can fresh vegetables, fresh meats, chicken, fish, duck, pig meat, cow meat, etc, any kind of fresh fruits all at 1/2 price or 1/4 the price you see in a mega super market like this one. The taste of food cooked with fresh ingredients much much better than those packaged and refrigerated or frozen ones.

8% of people in the UK are lactose intolerant whereas the figure for China is 92%. In Russia it varies per republic but it's between 13% and 57%. That's probably why not much dairy products are drunk or eaten in China (and Asia in general).

There is one supermarket brand in the US, Wegmans, that has in-store dining areas. I used to live in Rochester, NY for a few months and I loved the Wegmans there. But the variety shown in this video is unmatched even by Wegmans.

Honestly as a local grown up in Beijing, I don’t recommend Beijing as a place to experience family life. Maybe Guangdong or Shanghai is better. Because of most of the Beijing people they don’t enjoy life and live a fast pace life. Beijing is full of famous universities. Those Beijing local they are highly educated but live a tired life.
However, if you want to experience those ancient spiritual heritage, Beijing is the best place. There are a variety of performances like ancient dance dramas, Beijing opera. You can also experience many traditional handicrafts. But those are hidden in the normal streets, not well known even local people.

盒马鲜生 is a relatively high-end grocery store. So fancier decorations, more services, better quality control of the goods, etc. and of course at higher prices. You saw, for example, the chicken with black skin, and that is a certain breed called silkie chicken which is considered to have certain value in terms of traditional Chinese medicine. Such chicken goes best with other ingredients of medical value like cordyceps militaris to make a soup, but people don't necessarily want to pay extra for it to make an everyday meal. It is common for a person to only buy certain items he/she prioritizes at a store like this and gets other items at stores that are more cost-effective. Additionally, Chinese can have much more exquisite discrimination between ingredients than the factory-standardized measures a lot of westerners are more used to. So, randomly picking an item can give you misleading idea about how grocery cost in China compare to in another country. By the way, kiwi fruits actually originates in China and there are domestic kiwi fruits being sold by lower price.
Yes, kiwi fruit is originally the Chinese Gooseberry. I don't think many ordinary Chinese people would be able to shop in this high-end store. I've been watching a lot of Chinese videos about the struggles of the population. Thousands barely get enough to eat.

The live fish (etc) selection is pretty damned good. And that conveyor system is pretty sweet. My local shop (major retailer) has 1/10th the live selection and no fancy belt system ;)

If I remember it correctly, Mainland China is the biggest alcohol consuming region in the world, more than three times bigger than the second, so of course you can find all kinds of imported alcoholic products. China also imports and consumes huge amount of all kinds of products, the world's biggest market to most industries, but except cheese and olive oil I guess. lol

Very interesting. Although everything was reasonably priced, I can see why street food is so convenient. Probably no more expensive than cooking yourself. I do wonder what the average income is though because Russian prices are super cheap, matching much smaller income. It’s all relative. We’re spoilt in that English is used so much in many countries, especially at airports and train stations. And now I see in supermarkets as well. Great shopping experience Ty 😊❤. Oh yeah, I agree with another post about the amount of plastic used 😮.
Hema is actually one of nicer supermarkets, people with low income won't go there. they have more affordable options, other supermarkets, convenience stores, local wet markets or bazaars, or nearby farmers would drive into the city and sell veges or fruits they grow in their gardens.

Yes prices are quite stable because government controls not letting private companies to manipulate too much. Also there are giant state owned food companies to balance out when private owned food companies technically raise up prices.

I think most of the world gets avocados from Mexico. I live in Southern California where avocados are grown. Avocados in local markets are from Mexico. Our avocados are sent to New York.
