    Paul's guitar is expertly setup and maintained. Add his impeccable technique and you have a guitar that rarely goes "noticeably" out of tune.
    Peavey made the AT-200 Auto Tune Guitar. The tuning was done digitally. You could change tunings at the push of a button, but the strings didn't move.

    There are auto tune guitars. There's was one I saw a video on, a studio grade instrument that cost quite a bit. Can't remember what it was now, it was well outside of what I would or could pay for a guitar. It looked to me like it worked on string tension - so you set it while the strings were in tune, and you could get it to check tension and adjust at the push of a button. I think it might have multiple settings too, like for drop tuning. The autotune mechanism was in the body of the guitar.
    The modern approach is to use on board modelling and processing. You can buy the Peavey AT-200 which has this built in, but the Antares system that it uses can be retrofitted to any electric guitar. It's possible this is the system you were seeing in action here. I've heard some examples and it sounds spot on to me, but as someone who still tunes by ear I'm not sure how I feel about it.
    You can also get robotic tuning heads, but those things look quite horrible.

    I see that a couple of people mentioned the Evertune bridge. I just wanted to expand on that. It is a purely mechanical constant tension system; there are no electronics involved. It also works instantly and continuously.
    There are both fixed and vibrato Evertune bridges available. You have to adjust the vibrato version to allow it to change the pitch. If you don't do that, it will actually bring the strings back to pitch as you use the vibrato arm.
    I did find a reference that said that Paul Gilbert has had an Evertune bridge on at least one of his signature guitars. There were no pictures, so I can't say whether or not it is the same signature guitar model as is shown in the video.
    In other Paul Gilbert news, there is a video somewhere here on RUclips where Paul is talking about playing with the late, great Shawn Lane. Paul says that he was working hard, just about keeping up with Shawn, and was feeling pretty proud of himself. He then looked over at Shawn, and saw that Shawn was playing everything one-handed, and his pride sank.

      There is no Evertune with a vibrato arm. I'm sure they can make one, but its not available ATM.

    • @johnabbott138
      @johnabbott138 7 часов назад +1

      @justletmepostthis276 I could have sworn there was, but you're right. The scenario I was thinking of was actually string bending. In that case, when the string is bent, the pitch doesn't change unless the bridge has been adjusted to allow it to do so.
      I assume that the reason they haven't made a vibrato version is that it would be either 1) too limited in pitch change to be worth it, and/or 2) it would just be too mechanically complicated.

    the evertune bridge comes to mind- I think it references relative tension for the strings at rest individually? they seem to have a lot of moving parts for a non-trem bridge system (also my GOD are they expensive)

    I would say Paul did not "need to" tune the guitar "that gig". But he might on other gigs, especially where there were a lot of temperature or humidity changes. We live in an age of incredible QC for strings and instruments, and PG is super professional and almost certainly "knows what to do" more than most with all the aspects of the guitar. Meanwhile there are hardware based autotune guitars like the Evertune and Gibson Robot guitars, and then there were systems like the Steinberger which eliminated a lot of the friction points and variables in materials that caused tuning issues, and the Floyd Rose Speedloader where the strings were tempered ready to go for concert pitch with only minimal tuning needed (and no machine heads!). One of my guitars is really reliable for tuning and only really needs tuning out of the case as I tend to knock the machine heads getting it in and out. But I also play quite lightly and spend ages stretching my strings when I put fresh ones on. The Fender System III trem in the thumbnail should definitely be featured in a deep-dive Franvid!

  • @mootbooxle

    I want to put an Evertune bridge on my main axe. Back when I was working for Tascam, they sent us to the Sweetwater GearFest and Gibson lent us a few guitars and a bass for our display, and they had robo-tuners on which were brand new at the time. I thought, what an incredible idea…but what if something in the electronics freaks out and decides my guitar needs tuning mid-song? What if it accidentally got bumped into an alternate tuning mode?
    The Evertune seems to address all of those concerns.

    I just started watching and saw comments mentioning string “memory” and tuning stability, thought I would share my experience behind the Gibson vibrolas that everyone gives a bad reputation. I’ve got a 1969 SG short vibrola and that’s the most stable trem I have, more than my Floyd rose guitar. Those spring steel vibrolas are awesome though. I tried doing endless EVH style divebombs with it on 4 month old strings and can’t go out of tune. The vibrolas like a Floyd are floating, once you pass through tuning a couple times, it equalizes. And then it just stays in tune. If it goes out, I found you really just need to bend a string hard to knock the rest back, something just didn’t set back in place the same. The range and tension pushing back isn’t the best, but they make an amazing effect, and I think it actually is the main reason this SG stays in tune, while my 2 other SGs I’m always chasing tune. I’ve just converted one to a slide guitar for that reason. And they’re not even trem equipped guitars! Stopbars!
    In terms of “something in the guitar” you are kind of heading toward the idea of the Evertune, but that’s kind of just for perfect intonation (string bends won’t affect others, as each string is counterbalanced to a precise tension for the string gauge)
    Those units are huge and require a TON of wood routing, and some aren’t even thick enough for the unit. It’s awesome engineering. But I almost prefer the imperfect sound of an imperfect guitar. It keeps a bit of authenticity/realness . Absolutely perfect pitch 100% of the time feels more like midi to me!

      I've played a fretless bass that way for many years - autotuning at your fingertips quite literally. I imagine a fretless guitar would be nightmarish to play. I have seen guitars with frets arrayed in an "arc" pattern to try and account for "perfect" temper, some of which seem to work quite well, and others not so much.

    Definitely check out the Evertune bridge system. I have installed several over the past year or so and they work! Each string has its own spring system and the string tension is fine-tuned during the stringing/tuning process.

  • @hvrock13
    @hvrock13 9 часов назад

    Also, fender years back when I had just started playing (around 2004), there was the VG Stratocaster that had a special midi pickup I believe, and you could rotate a selector knob and it would modulate the pitch to a new tuning, completely artificially like a pitch shift pedal but for each specific string. So you didn’t even need to be in tune. It didn’t last long, and you used to be able to buy a kit for the electronics as an upgrade. But maybe it wasn’t all that great because I can’t really find them out in the wild easily. Cool concept but probably too early for that tech! Sorta like Gibsons robot tuners.. I’ve seen a video of those breaking a headstock and OUCH that hurt to hear

    Don't your bridge tuners adjust the string length .. whereas the headstock tuners only adjust string tension. The string length tuner is what gets your string in tune all the way up and down the fretboard. I usually check mine using the 12th fret (1 octive higher).

    On self-tuning machine heads (as others have spoken about), have a look at Music is Win's video about them - "I Tried Robotic Tuners and I Wish I Hadn't." It's hilarious!
    I think a self tuning guitar that's does it while you're playing could only work estimating the tension of any open string that isn't being played - I don't think it could do it any other way. And looking at how fast he gets across those strings it would have to be quick about it!

    eh, as others have said gibson made one but it's dumb and no one wants it, i highly doubt paul has auto tuners in his guitar...there are some guitars that for whatever reason just stay in tune a lot better than others...i have a gretsch from 20+ years ago that i hardly ever have to tune and actually I've never changed the strings on it although I probably should lol....my tele stays in tune pretty well and even a guitar i made with a shitty knock off floyd rose will stay in tune for at least a few days although i tend not to abuse the whammy...it's probably just a well kept guitar that a tech sets up before the show, there are tricks to keep the strings from binding like lube or graphite....I'm sure paul has needed to tune during a show or broken a string etc...
