    25:14 This surprised even me, but it's actually the other way around. "The Legend of Zelda" is the subtitle on the original Japanese version of Zelda 1. The game is called "The Hyrule Fantasy: The Legend of Zelda". They just kept the original game's subtitle for the rest of the series for whatever reason.
    Feels weird that we could have ended up in the timeline where they didn't do that and the series is known as "The Hyrule Fantasy". Personally, I much prefer what we got, even if the strict association with Zelda makes it seem odd considering how little of a role she plays in so many of the games.

    • @miqwerty

      Makes me wonder, if they had gone with the Hyrule Fantasy name then there's a good chance that they wouldn't have kept the same protagonists and antagonist in all the games and would've had a rotating cast in the same setting a la most RPG series. Very odd to think about now

    The title change was pretty much solely due to Nintendo of America's strict localization policies at the time. This game came out pre-ESRB, so with no regulations on video game content and thus no real legal defense in the case of controversy, the typical course of action was to simply avoid any content that could at all be considered objectionable -- and in prudish late-80s early-90s America, this included direct references to religion. Which, yes, included the word "god" itself. The title "A Link to the Past" was chosen because the game was a prequel and NoA liked the pun. That's it.
    And the title wasn't the only thing that was changed in localization because of this. The very blatant cathedral is referred to as the more neutral term "sanctuary," Agahnim is called a "wizard" instead of a priest, and the Seven Sages are now the "Seven Wise Men" (funny in hindsight because Ocarina would show us that five of them were actually women). It's the same reason Final Fantasy games at the time changed the churches into "clinics" (replacing the cross on the steeple with a heart) and renaming the Holy spell "Pearl."

  • @meleeludens
    @meleeludens Год назад +34

    Regarding the timeline;
    Zelda 2 was made as a direct sequel to Zelda 1,
    ALTTP was made as a distant prequel to Zelda 1
    OOT was made as a direct prequel to ALTTP
    MM was made as an immediate sequel to OOT
    WW was made as a direct sequel to OOT where Link disappeared (Adult timeline)
    TP was made as a direct sequel to OOT as well, where Link remained and Ganondorf was arrested (Child timeline)
    SS was explicitly made as an absolute starting point to the franchise
    BOTW was explicitly made as an absolute end point to the franchise, with no explicit timeline given
    As someone who does care about the continuity and timeline, it actually all holds together decently well. If you do pay attention to the story, there is a fairly consistent narrative thread holding it all together. While there are definitely smaller inconsistencies, the major narrative threads tend to be consistent; especially if you go by the Japanese original texts. Even side games tend to be managed this way:
    Link's Awakening is an immediate sequel to ALTTP
    Spirit Tracks and Phantom Hourglass are direct sequels to WInd Waker
    It kinda sucks that the Zelda timeline is given such an awful reputation, which I attribute to the kinds of people trying to argue minor landmarks shared between two games contradict the official timeline or whatever. The main games are honestly pretty consistent with each other, but even I will admit once you start trying to include shit like Triforce Heroes and Four Swords (GBA) its pretty hard to justify some continuity errors. Also the whole 'Downfall Timeline' is slightly contrived
    I do just want to point out that there is far more intent and direction behind the timeline than people give it credit for. I wouldn't put it anywhere near Sega's blatant lack of care for continuity with the Sonic franchise. Here's an interview from Aonuma in 2007 himself identifying the difference between the Child and Adult timelines in reference to Twilight Princess! www.zeldadungeon.net/wiki/Interview:Nintendo_Dream_February_2007
    obviously if you're still not interested in the timelines, continuity, and rationalizing little inconsistencies, that's totally fine, the games are still wonderful as standalone experiences :D

      For me it's also a matter of how the timeline doesn't actually matter for the events of most of the stories. How does TP taking place in the same timeline as Majora's Mask make the story better? It doesn't. It has no impact on the game's story. The Hero's Spirit is the old Link... And? Things like that don't actually impact the individual game stories in meaningful ways.

    10:05 counterpoint: while gameplay-wise, map-marking handholds and takes away the spirit of zelda1's blind adventuring, we are also given a storyline in this game. Narratively speaking, it always made sense to me that link would mark the map like this for the player because they LIVE in Hyrule and would know how to get around, famous landmarks, etc. Whereas in Zelda1 there wasnt any indication Link LIVED in Hyrule, i think people just assumed he did bc he starts the game there (and honestly dont think the devs gave that any thought) so a big gray blob for a map, tho probs just a technical limitation, made sense to me as a kid. (This was also supported in my child brain because i was watching the american zelda cartoon at the same time, which established that link was indeed hired from another land and was not native to Hyrule)

    It's funny looking back at all the backlash to Wind Waker's cel shading and people demanding Zelda games need to look gritty and "realistic," because it seems a lot of people forget -- visually, A Link to the Past was sort of the Wind Waker of its era. Sprites are bouncy and overly-animated, colors are bright, etc. Just really *look* at the trees in this game, and you'd think they came from The Minish Cap or something.

  • @KidAL0
    @KidAL0 Год назад +1

    I know next to nothing about the timeline, but I just figured the English subtitle “A Link to the Past” was in reference to this game going back to the original format set by the first. I also do really appreciate almost every entry being referred to solely by its subtitle; gives them a greater sense of identity I guess. A certain game might not be so much about Zelda herself (she’s not even in some of them) and so it’s characterized by its more unique elements, such as the often titular core item/gimmick involved in that specific game’s narrative. But now we have people saying “Breath of the Wild: Tears of the Kingdom” which has quickly become a pet peeve of mine. IT’S “SHOULD’VE,” NOT “SHOULD OF.” THE PLURAL FORM OF “AMIIBO” IS STILL “AMIIBO.” AND TEARS OF THE KINGDOM IS NOT A SUBTITLE TO BREATH OF THE WILD

In addition to having a beautiful full colored instruction manual that details all the items and enemies, it also came with a big strategy guide and a partial world map that shows the location of the first 3 or 4 dungeons plus some overworld secrets, and blank spaces for you to fill in if you choose. ya gotta keep perspective on old games. Man, that thing about there being too many Rupees in the game is something that drives me crazy in pretty much every Zelda game after the first one. It's a challenge for me to *not* constantly have a full wallet, and I'll intentionally buy miscellaneous crap I don't need just so my wallet *isn't* constantly packed to the brim. It gets especially annoying in Twilight Princess, where the game won't even let you pick up any Rupee worth more than five if you can't fit it in your wallet.
    Every Zelda game should max your Rupee count at 9999. Ocarina and Majora only go up to 500, Wind Waker and Twilight Princess 1000, and that's *after* getting both wallet upgrades.

    I find it hard to like this game considering the circumstances that made my first playthrough absolute hell. LTTP was one of the last 2D Zelda titles I played, and so the slightly unrefined controls and item quirks aggrivated me to no end. The difficulty and lack of variety in the music tracks (seriously, Dark World Dungeon theme in EIGHT different dungeons, ugh) also did not do the game any favors. The entire time I was playing I questioned how so many people found this game to be one of the best in existence, while I found it to be *genuinely the most frustrating game I've ever played*.
    I think the answer comes down to when and how often someone has played the game. My love for Oracle of Seasons can be explained this way, as I found the game quite difficulty at first but came to love it as I kept replaying it, with it also being one of the first few (button-controlled) 2D Zelda games I played alongside Link's Awakening and A Link Between Worlds.

This was pre-ESRB and video games were still largely seen as a children's hobby, so Nintendo of America was constantly trying to avoid stepping on any toes. The villain of the game is called a priest in the Japanese version, and there's no way early-90s America, in the middle of the Satanic Panic, would be okay with a "kids game" where the main objective is to kill a priest.

    Lol i dont like this game. Never been a fan of the top down Zeldas. I have played them tho. Links Awakening remake is the only one i like but man do i LOVE the remake. Such a cool world and its not confusing and its just such a cute artstyle with a great story and characters and dungeon design

    17:03 That's so true. My first Zelda was A Link to the Past, and it made me fall in love with the series, but I can't bring myself to play through it again because I find it boring after all those other games.

    I agree, the timeline doesn't mean shit, thet are LEGENDS ABOUT PRINCESSESS CALLED ZELDA, the timeline doesn't exist unless they explicitly state that the stories are interlinked

      Except every single goddamn game references events hundreds of years in the past that either directly reference a game that's already out or are eventually expanded on for their own game with the only backstory that has never been elaborated on being the one from Minish Cap so your argument is completely invalid

    • @mrhalfsaid1389
      @mrhalfsaid1389 Год назад

      @Cass&Crew legends can be interlinked as I literally said in the first point, including those ones with events far gone being phantom hourglass and spirit tracks. Those games are interlinked to other "child timeline" games which doesn't counter my point

    • @mrhalfsaid1389
      @mrhalfsaid1389 Год назад

      Also they could be legends which exist within those other legends

    • @CassiusStelar

      @@mrhalfsaid1389 yeah but if they are all specifically stated to be interlinked then guess what.
      That's
      A
      Timeline.

    Overrated, ocarina of time is the pinnacle of Zelda, link to the past is the Sesame Street version of Zelda for toddlers.
