- We celebrated a special 4th of July at Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen. We ate some burgers, rode some rides, met some of our subscribers, and Miranda tasted pie from our friends at the American Pie Company along with former US Ambassador to Denmark Rufus Gifford.
We asked about food diplomacy as an Ambassador and what Danish dishes he misses now that he lives back in the US.
Enjoy this extra special epsiode of Travelin' Young.

Rufus Gifford was the perfect ambassador. We all love him.
We should petition Biden and whoever comes after him (if that person is not 45 again...) to re-consider Gifford for a 2nd stint! (If Gifford wants to ofc)
@@barath4545 There a some gossip about Rufus climing the ladder in politics. If that is true I wish him ALL the best and cry in silence over him not coming back to DK to work
No ambassador can be perfect. Always room for improvements. He was not a bad ambassador.
Rufus and his husband were the best couple in the US embassy, ever.
Such sympathetic & gracious people..they are missed 🇩🇰🇺🇸
Enig
Helt enig 👍
Rufus was certainly the best American diplomat ever in Denmark.
Truth!
certainly the most popular for sure!!! he was the perfect pick for ambassador.
@@TravelinYoung Exactly we miss him
he was certainly the most popular as Jeppe wrote@@TravelinYoung
And the one after him is one of those people we hope history will remember as a standout of how perhaps not to do it ( I will not even write her name )
I like him too, but what did he achieve... really? "Best American diplomat ever" is really a strong statement :)
You nailed the interview with the most popular ambassador to Denmark for decades Miranda.
Haha, thanks!
I remember when he started as ambassador, he was very loved by people here.
I wish we lived here then, but great to see him come back often.
I think Rufus is the only ambassador who is known by Danes in general. Not only American ambassadors but all of them. The only ambassador who stepped out of his office to meet people.
Yeah, feels like he redefined the role of an Ambassador.
Agreed!
@@TravelinYoung In Denmark, it`s not WHAT YOU ARE - but WHO YOU ARE, that counts (Jante law still owerrules everything here) - and thats why Rufus is so well like`d in Denmark, dispite we may have diff. opinions/believes/standpoints - we respect, and thrust him, as 1 of us - - cant say that on the last Embassador we had.
So true
The best one we had was probably not the official ambassador but the wife of one of them: Katrina (Lantos) Swett, who was married to Richard Swett ("Dick Swett" -- really!). She was the obvious political talent in that family but he was the one in the limelight (while she was actually running his political campaigns). She stayed home and had 7 kids -- they are both Mormons.
I really wish she could have been the ambassador instead of him.
She got her PhD in Denmark, btw.
Rufus Gilford is like you guy's great representatives for your country, clever, kind, funny and open minded. Further more he had understanding for our values and politics, and of course for the LQBT+ course, in fact he got married in Denmark. We miss him so much!
Rufus is worth his weight in gold
Haha, for sure!
Rufus Gifford was by far one of the best ambassadors from the US we've ever had, glad to see he's doing well. Happy 4th!
Thanks, it seems so! It's too bad we never lived here at the same time as him.
Rufus Gifford was loved as an American ambassador here in Denmark 🇺🇸❤️💙🧡💚
For sure, such a great guy!
I think Rufus and Denmark was a perfect match.
Rufus is SUCH an affable person! It was a shame he wasn't elected to Congress... Always very enjoyable to see and hear him 👍
He is fantastic!
@@TravelinYoung - I agree! 👍
Happy 4th :)
I don't think I've ever seen a more likeable American than Rufus. I hope he's doing very well.
Thanks, he is super nice, it was fun getting to talk to him.
Glad you got to meet and talk to this wonderful man also.
He is the best ambassador from the US to Denmark - ever.
For sure!
I hope Rufus Gifford, get to the top in American politics. I really think he's one of the good guys.
Agreed!
A belated happy 4th of July tpu you guys ♡
Rufus is sorely missed. He showed Danes how friendly and wonderful Americans really are. I can't even remember what his successor's name was. She was just uninteresting. Thanks for interviewing Rufus and reminding us what we lost with him.
Thankfully, YOU are still here to underline the amazing qualities of America and Americans :)
This is so amazing to read. Thank you for saying this :).
Rufus is so great. We really loved, and miss, him.
Truth!
Belated happy 4th of July..
Rufus was probably the best ambassador in the modern era of Denmark. It's really a great symbiosis that occurred during his tenure.
Good to see he's still thriving
Agreed!
Rufus Gifford; one of the very few - if not the only one - who, when telling people that his time as an Ambassador was over, people automatic started wondering “well, you don’t have to leave just because of that”. “We can find you a place to stay and a job too”!
Rufus is an excellent diplomat full stop. That he was the US ambassador to Denmark was just wonderful for us. He never stopped boosting the USA's interests, but he did it in a way the Danes could relate to - and that is the mark of a great Diplomat. Wonderful man, lovely family - Denmark misses him but the population of Skovshoved and Ordrup miss him and his family most - seeing them take the dogs to the beach for a walk, and Halloween was a delight! His 'she shall not be named' replacement rather destroyed the USA's relationship with Denmark, and rather underlined her 'disdain' by neither showing her face on a daily basis, and also not (what a symbolic error it was) failing to hold the Halloween party. Diplomacy is nothing if it is not about generating 'understanding' - Rufus is the 'go to guy'.
I've lived in the States, California specifically, so I have some inkling of American politeness and formal culture - and if I'm not totally mistaken, we're actually witnessing quite a moment of Danishness here: You see, American culture can be almost Victorian in its politeness and respect for authority; a quite surprising aspect of otherwise freedom-loving and folksy US culture to an uncouth Viking ~ so Miranda chit-chatting with the former ambassador as if they're childhood friends, even interrupting a few times, and Rufus bobbing around and showing a bit of body language (as opposed to standing up straight and keeping up a formal appearance) is actually quite a Danish way of engaging with authority (even if former)... they're both being very "well-integrated" ~ and if there's one thing to bring back to the US from these shores, then a more informal-yet-friendly relationship with authority (especially when elected by themselves, King George III's been dead for 200 yrs) would probably be a very good one... 🇩🇰🇺🇸🇩🇰🇺🇸🇩🇰🇺🇸 ✌️😊
* I mean, the whole idea of "equality under the law" also came from these shores some 1200 years ago (the Danelaw ~ Anglo-Saxons weren't big on equality), so you can just consider it an upgrade to your existing cultural framework... and don't worry, you won't have to restart your culture, the upgrade will just run in the background while you continue working... 🤭
I am Danish having lived in Chicago for 26 years. Your comments are spot on.
So that was a "High amount of Psycho babble"! What was your point? Yeah I know! I'm stupid 😒 ! But I'm sure you could have made your point without the entire history lesson, and the political speech before 🙂 ! Your clearly well articulated! No doubt about that 😎 !
Great! Did anybody else notice the complete starstruck woman in the back?
Haha, one of my friends was helping take photos of us. It could have been her you saw :).
I vote for Miranda to be the next ambassador in Denmark - You are "Rufus" level already
Haha, love it :).
How nice to see Rufus again
Rufus is a good'un, he definitly left a mark in Denmark.
Haha, for sure!
Rufus definitely bulked up doing Covid. Even his voice got deeper! He looks like the kind of Hollywood movie President lol. A truly great man, always
YES! Rufus is back!!
Hopefully he will keep coming back :).
Soooo bummed that I was unable to go to Tivoli Garden to meet all 4 of you. I just love you guys, and is it even possible to not love Rufus??? Hopefully there will be a meet and greet some other time, and I will have to see if I can make it there. :D
Haha, we will do more meet and greets for sure. It was a lot of fun for us, probably after the summer :).
It's funny to see the people in the background conspicuously taking photos and video.
Fantastic interview , he is such a wonderful man …. 💞💞💞
For sure, thanks!
Would love it if he became president one day. Just an awesomely great guy.
Rufus seems like such a nice guy.
For some reason, I have this feeling that he makes everyone feel welcome around him.
Like the kind of person you'd love to spend an evening with.
He is great!
What a lovely interview. And nice to see Rufus again. Happy 4th of July to you guys. 😊
Thanks so much!
Rufus is awesome. ❤👍
Truth!
@@TravelinYoung Not sure if you know, but he was a guest on a danish tv show called "Hvem sagde Vuf?" with his dog at one point. Really fun to see. :)
Looooove the food enthusiasm!!! And LOVE Rufus! so cool that you got to interview him. Great job Young's
Thanks, we thought it would be a fun topic to talk about :).
Rufus is just such a great person. As the young saying goes: Not all superheroes wears a cape
He is great!
Not just an ambassador but THE ambassador.
There are so many things about Denmark I would love to learn and being a person who has disabilities and my wife has disabilities there are disability questions I would love to get answered
Rufus!!! Youre always welcome here in DK
Great guy, I'd love to meet him.
I agree he is super nice!
Glad you had an amazing day, and great interview with Rufus. Haven't tried pumpkin pie yet, just made me more curious about it now.
We did and do it!!
When I was an exchange student in Iowa, I had key lime pie. I still make it today because some shops now sell condensed milk.
Funny, I also had Key Lime Pie the first time, when I was in Davenport, Iowa.
Had it for breakfast at a Breakfast Inn, with other "Lets just try it" things and it was amazing!
Just curious, where in Iowa were you an exchange student?
This guy❤️
Thank you for taking the time to have a chat and picture yesterday. Let me know if the interview with the person I referred you to needs a push :)
Our pleasure! I’ll let you know if I need a nudge. Thanks for the help :).
Ruuuuuuuufuuuuuuus! 🇩🇰❤🇺🇸
Haha!
I have only heard good things about that man😆
For sure!
How cool. Rufus is such a great guy.
Agreed!
Rufus... he is one great American. We want him back ....
Haha for sure :).
I get to see him speak I Herning once, a true diplomat. Always well spoken and pleasant to everybody, and I think he really embodies the perfect embassador.
Democratic politicians in USA almost always falls in love with Denmark, former President Bill Clinton backpacked here as young and fell in love with our country and our people, and Rufus when he became ambassador just showed our country so much love that we all have to respect him. And yes pumpkin (græskar) isnt a typical danish consumable, personally i am one of those danes that dont mind most american food, but pumpkins and peanutbutter my tastebuds simply dont understand :D
Oh I love all things pumpkin....Pie, Bread, Pancakes, etc :). He did seem to live DK, which is wonderful.
And do we miss Rufus!? For sure. One, or maybe the best, ambassador ever! I happen to know one of his bodyguards from PET, who have only nice things to say and tell about him. He was a totally easy going, down to earth guy. And as you all know, clearly completely opposite the arrogant Clara Sands, who did not understand the slightest thing, about danish culture. Some of what Denmark is best known for, is our cycling culture. But Clara's reasoning was, that Danes cycle because we can not afford a car!? Rufus, we miss you!
Coolest ambassador we have ever had here.
Shout out to Rufus
Happy Independence day you guys!. Great interview mith Rufus! (And yeah you’re right about the pumpkin pie thing) :)
Thanks and thanks....but eat Pumpkin Pie :).
His Danish is really good. I miss Rufus. Great interview
Thanks!
I ❤ Rufus and Stephen.
Thank you for this video.
He's my favorite US ambassador to DK ever 👍
We loved Rufus and his partner... they embraced us as a country and made themselves available .. absolutely brilliant ...
US could not have send a better man to Denmark as a representative👍
Thank you for your input❤️ love Rufus and his way of being🍀☀️🎉
Wonderful stuff, I mean you can never go wrong with Rufus. And I mean heck he was big when he was here, from all of his interactions with the public and his down to earth friendliness, not to mention his own TV show that DR produced, "I am the ambassador". I know Netflix got the rights to distribute it internationally but if you guys haven't watched it yet, its actually available for free on DR TV, right here actually. www.dr.dk/drtv/serie/jeg-er-ambassadoeren_6408
Great video! Love Rufus! He seems so friendly ☺️💜💙
He is, thanks :).
I love that guy ❤️ Great video
Thanks, he is awesome!
I love pumpkin pie😋. The varieties of spices make it a wonderful dessert👌, and after a few tries I think I got the recipe right.
Pumpkin is my fav for sure.
What a scoop! You'll skyrocket to 20k subscribers now :)
Haha, it was very cool, let's see what happens :).
You guys are truly the best ambassadors for your country!
I love Rufus - the one and only American ambassador the Danes will ever remember. He is very much a man of the people and the only person in that office to ever come out and meet the danes and embrace our culture- As well as try to introduce us Danes to your way of living.
We love that guy.
You are doing a great job of incorporating and living the danish life, and we enjoy to see that.
Keep doing what you do, and i`m sure that you`ll continue to feel welcome in this little great land of ours.
We certantly welcome you with arms wide open...
Rufus is amazing 👏🏻
He is fantastic!
Happy 4th of July
Thanks!
Fantastic interview Miranda. You’re so natural and great questions. I love Rufus😍 so double delight with Rufus and Travelin’ Young

So jealous, I love him & his family….. 🐕🐕👬
Yeehaaw! Rufus for prime minister!
That guy really know how to butter us up, and we love it. Come back to us Rufus
Haha, he is great :).
I love the American Pumpkin Pie, I ate way to much of it when I lived in WV. I named Sunday, Pie Day because that became my favorite Sunday cookout dish.
Happy 4th
Thanks!
Great interview, and it was so nice to get to meet you in person in Tivoli 😃🍻
Greeting from Andreas & Chari
Great to meet you also! :)
Rufus was, and is so cool.
Agreed!
Now this is a good video idea :)
Haha, thanks!
Just saw this again. We may be good at "Pastries", but no one does "Pies" better than you guys. I couldn't even choose a favorite! There ALL just that good 👍😊👍 ! Yeah, even the Pumpkin Pie ❤️ ! Went to "Key West" a few years ago. The entire plan was to have the original, at the original place 😀 ! Thanks to "Andrew Zimmern", there was a line around the corner. So we gave up and found another place. Danes don't do long lines 😁 !! We find alternatives instead ! Found this great bakery inside a small Mall, at the Cruise Ship port! Was great 👍 !
Great interview, Miranda. Almost every Dane love Rufus.
Thanks!
Rufus rum for President, you are the best.
Happy belated 4th!! It sounds like you guys had a great one at Tivoli, I wish I could've gone to hang out, but work didn't permit it. I hope you guys eventually venture to the north of Jylland (Skagen and Aalborg are calling!) and that you'll have some kind of meeting around there. All the best!
Thanks! I hope we can at some point, but you never know where we will be when out and about. Be on the lookout and say hey :).
Late happy 4th to you Young´ns..
Rufus hes been the best GD ambassador the U.S. could´ve ever wished for !
You guys need to go for Sønderjysk kaffebord and also... Give a rating on the best Fynske Brunsviger and the best danish hotdog (also found in Kerteminde, Fyn) :)
Stay safe Young´ns !
We, a dk-fr family, celebrate thanksgiving cause we used to have an US friend. We still celebrate without any US people.
My point is we always make pumpkin pie with loads of nutmeg... Everyone LOVES it.
love brisket
Rufus i amazing, just like you guys..😃👍🏻
Thanks for saying that :).
A great if not the greatest video yet on your channel, Happy 4 of July. 🇺🇸🇩🇰🇺🇸🇩🇰🇺🇸
Haha, thanks so much!
I bake pumpkin pie for every Christmas and it's delicious! :D
I still miss pecan pie and pumpkin pie.
And we want Rufus Gifford back as Ambassador, course we can talk/reason with "this guy" - "that" last 1 was a big mistake - - big big mistake, - she almost blow our relations with The United States of America, some repair/fix`d need`s to be done..............
Happy 4th. of July from Himmerland - (area that host celebration in Rebild every 4th. of July)
Never met him myself, but he sure is one of my favorit americans for sure ;-)
Rufus for President.
Rufus!
Haha!
Skøn video 🍓
After the past 4 years of that actress playing ambassador. , we would like to have the real one back, thank you very much Pres Biden or VP Harris. Send us this man please 👍
🥰
perhaps Rebildfest for next year D. 4 July
:-)) Love
A channel like this, is straight out of Joseph Nye Soft Power Doctrine. Plus - it works.
If you have Netflix, You should definately the The Docu Series "The Ambasedor" Out, which was actually made in a co-op. between The US Embasy and DR, One of our National Broardcasters. And the reason why they made it, was because, Rufus Gifford was always asked, What does an ambasedor actually do? And it was a little difficult to explain, so they decided to show it. and the series became a sucess by Coincidence, but the original inted, was education. And then Netflix bought the series, so it should be on there, if you have acess to it :-)
I watch priority's games, Denmark is close to UK, Ireland, and Germany,. Just mind that tourism, and cardholders ❤️
Rufus for President 2024 and Miranda for the US Senate - as soon as possible 😊 😊 😊 !! Otherwise..., BRING Rufus back as ambassador (BEST one EVER 😊 😊 😊 ) !!!!
Haha, love it!
