A rich noble of the time would be stunned by things we take for granted like... google maps for example.
3:00, you can now step under gate in Google Maps! I used Google Translate on that sign and here is what I got: Rataj was called Rataj until 1900. The Walled Walls surrounded the entire town at that time and both castles. Hoteisi Rataj castle stood on the site of the current castle. Until 1890, the so-called upper gate stood there and behind it a bridge over a deep moat. There is a city coat of arms on the gate.
08:19 hey Rox! This small way up leads to the stairs you see at 02:00 on the right. This means, this IS the full way up from the bathhouse to the gate, as we know it from the game. I´ve been walking up there irl.
For those interested, I translated the sign on Pirkstein Castle. In the middle of the 18th century, after the construction of the upper castle, the Pirkštejn castle was modified by the princes Kinský, the then holders of Rataj, for parish retreat. The castle voice (?) is modern, inside there is a former famine (?). The extensions (?) were transformed into bell towers, the bells are early in the (from the early?) 16th century. The houses called "pension" are small accommodation facilities that have specifically between 5 and 20 rooms and are usually owned and run by one family. The word comes from french "pension" (a small accommodation facility that doesn't offer dining services) and has carried the same meaning throughout history, but nowadays the term is more loose when it comes to dining and bigger pensions usually offer breakfast and some even supper. We still have hotels too though. But, they have to have at least 21 rooms and most of them offer a full dining service.
2:00 You got it wrong. The main road (11129) wasn't there in the past, and it's still quite a way down from there to the river and the mill. 8:18 That's the actual road up hill to the gate. 4:31 Yes, exactly, that alpha (not beta) was way closer to the current-time Rattay. I mentioned that in a comment 🙂
Great video Roxy. These are really interesting. I'm incredibly looking forward to you going (hopefully in the new year) and having a gander in person. Much love. Keep doin what you're doin!
It's so fascinating seeing this comparison. You'd think after hundreds of years it'd look completely different but it's like have deja vu. Visiting these places are definitely on my bucket list. Amazing video as always! P.S. It looks like your notifications are working as I got one for this video.
Sexy Biscuit is coming to Czech republic! I unfortunatelly don't live anywhere near Prague or Sázava, so I will not be able to meet you in person, which is sad. But enjoy your stay, and I hope you will like it here! Looking forward to your vlog

How cool would it be if the next iteration of KCD expanded to include more of the empire? Even if only to Medieval Praha. It would be particularly cool to experience a shift in the languages spoken by NPCs as you meander through czech, polish, germanic (etc) areas
Ive spent so many hours in Rattay in the game that I feel like Id actually be able to navigate through the actual town. It really feels like Ive been there many times. Thats what makes KCD so fuckin special
Warhorse Studio artists did a tremendous job at making nature look... well, natural and engaging. And they also created a LOT of natural landmarks most of which are NOT referenced in any way by the game's world and NPCs. I think it's a wasted opportunity: NPCs could use landmarks as a reference to help player at least navigate without a map to other settlements or quest destinations. And the player would notice the amount of effort WH put into making wild nature so interesting to explore. Some quests try to do that but it's not consistent throughout the game. @Sexy Bisquit Do you have any info if these issues would be taken into consideration in future WH game(s) ?
Wait until spring, the naked trees, chilly winds of winter are kinda depressing - mostly without snow, tourist spots closed. For this trip I would reccomend you to rent bikes, that way you can travel whole map in a day. These small roads are perfect for that. And you should rent a canoe for Sázava river (Sasau), it is a spot for local tourism.
@@Pyrochemik007 But it's different using bike as sport tool and using it as vehicle for transporting. If you live in hilly area and you need get from point A to point B without be completely sweaty, you probably at least think about buying e-bike if you don't have car. It's not even fast using standard bicycle in such places, I prefer walk in very hilly regions. I can walk 5 km in less than hour and I am fine when I arrive, try to do it with bicycle when half of that way is up to hill. It looks like small distance, but try it, it's not so easy biking few kms to hill. :-)
Hi you sexy biscuit! A nice vid of yours. As always ♥ . Got a few tips for you. 1) I suppose the "czech map" you mentioned was mapy.cz. In that case I can assure you it has full street view just as google maps. It is called Panorama and has an eye for its symbol. You can find the button in top left corner of the screen. It has a more detailed network (for example you can go to Vranik or stand closer to the gate in Rataje). 2) Mapy.cz also has a function which allows you to look at older aerial maps (2003-2020) or a map from 19th century. You can find this option also in top left corner if you click "Change map". 3) The text on the sign under the gate is in czech. I tried to roughly translate it. I´ll write it as a separate comment. 4) (Bonus one) There is a czech song called "Co se stalo v Rataji" or "What happened in Rataj". It definitely has a medieval vibe in it so you can check it out! Link to the english version of mapy.cz: en.mapy.cz/zakladni?x=14.9725856&y=49.8401130&z=13
My translation of the sign: Until 1900 Rataje was called "Rataje Hrazené" (=I´d translate it roughly as Rataje Fortified). Walls surrounded the whole town and its two castles. The upper castle of Rataje stood on the site of today´s Rataje chateau. There also, until 1890, stood the so called upper gate with a bridge across the town´s deep moat. Near lower gate, which used to be longer, stands until today Pirkštejn castle. It was founded by house of "Lipá" (A medieval czech noble family which has two black sticks on a yellow field in their coat of arms) in the 14th century. Today there is a clergy house in the castle and on the gate is the towns coat of arms. I hope there aren´t many mistakes. Also somebody already mentioned, that in the castle lives a clergyman, so credits to him.
the bonus song link: ruclips.net/video/9Olh8pHxm2I/видео.html It is a story of a man murdering his wife although she begged him not to kill her, because she was preagnant. It is from 1988 from album Šibeničky (the Gallows) by Spiritual Kvintet. The album is full of songs about murders, tragedies, crimes and executions.
Everywhere must have been recieving such traffic due to KCD that the Czech government's tourism board must be throwing the renovation money about like mad and thus everywhere is shut.
@@SexyBiscuit I gotta thank Warhorse for putting me onto your content. If you didn't know, they posted this video in their "KCD on Steam Deck" news update on Steam. I didn't even realize how much I was missing out the last couple years. Now I get to catch up with all your content! :D You do an excellent job btw, keep up the hard work. :)
Interest Czech Republic is amazing and i would love to go over there!! I love the monasteries the Churches the beautiful frescos of that period it is amazing and it keeps the faith! Was anyone able to go inside sasau monastery! this priest in the game was like "saint benedict monks stay in there" Interesting facts, mongols got defeated by this areas kingdom! Jesus Christ Be Praised!
This guy visited every location of the game and made a side-by-side comparison! There is a whole series. Quality stuff! ruclips.net/video/LHDNeXmQY4w/видео.html
I know that region, my grandparents have hut there. It's probably the most shitholeish shithole of all shitholes. There is literally nothing around in circle cca 20 km, no bigger cities, no shops, no hotels, only few village restaurants. :-D It's said, when I was kid, there were shop in Ratay and even city looked better, today half of buildings are abandoned. It's weird, most of our cities are well maintaned and restored, I don't know why this area around Ratay is so outdated and damaged. BTW I didn't know pension is not international word, it's probably from German langauge, it's type of accomodation, but not so luxury like hotel, maybe something similar to hostel, hostel is word which is not used here at all so maybe pension is hostel.
If you come here, we will move around with you of course. And yes, Sazava Monastery might be the highlight of the area. :)
I would be honoured!!
I love KCD
Love KCD!
@Warhorse can you release the KCD beta for XMAS? or any nice stuff? maybe XMAS trees in Rattay or so?
Keep up the great work! KCD -> best game!

My translation of the sign:
Until 1900 Rataje was called "Rataje Hrazené" (=I´d translate it roughly as Rataje Fortified).

It is a story of a man murdering his wife although she begged him not to kill her, because she was preagnant. It is from 1988 from album Šibeničky (the Gallows) by Spiritual Kvintet. The album is full of songs about murders, tragedies, crimes and executions.
The whole album has the medieval/folklore vibe in it so in case you were intrested: ruclips.net/video/0_bz3ckLSQw/видео.html

Real life looses again
Nice video
But it sounds like he talks with a mouth full spit
