  • DON'T BE AFRAID TO WIRE YOUR OWN GAUGES! We're breaking down the basics of what's happening behind the dash on your console with your gauge wiring. It's not so scary once you understand how gauges are powered and supplied signal. These gauges are Faria brand, and their Chesapeake line. I've had great luck with installing them on lots and lots of boats (even my own!).

      @@brod12313 I’ve never installed a dual helm setup. I would reach out to a local dealer or service center used to dealing with dual helms and ask them. I’m not sure if you can just piggy back off the signal wires or not. I’ll do a little research and see if I can find out more.

    • @tomspontoons
      @tomspontoons  2 года назад +1

      @@BoondockingCajunstyle Great question! It does have running/navigation lights. I’ve seen gauge backlights wired both ways, even from the factory. I was always taught to wire them into the key switch, that way they’re on when they’re needed…when the engine is running. No wrong way to do it as long as you can see them at night!!

  • @powdermagnet

    Great video - thank you! Two questions: Is there some basis for deciding which gauge to start with to receive power directly from the ignition? Is there a reason why the power is jumped from the tach to the speedometer and ends there, whereas there is a second jumper from the tach. to the volt-meter, which is jumped to the fuel gauge?

    Thanks Tom your video really helped. Did you have to use the Yamaha AGI to get these gauges to work or were the connections taken from the bus wires?

    • @tomspontoons
      @tomspontoons  Год назад

      There’s a lead for gauges worked into the 10 pin main harness for the engine that runs from the motor to the key switch, shift/throttle, and under-dash accessories. I wired this to be spliced into that portion of the main harness. Ultimately, the colors will match up to the gauge leads for power and signals. Let me know if that makes sense.

    I have a 2006 Yamaha 90 2 stroke and the gauges were replaced but not the harness. This video is great at explaining the mess that's under the dash!!! On mine I see two small fuses on the yellow wires but did not see them on your wiring. did you put fuses in and if you did where?
    Thanks a milllion!

    • @tomspontoons
      @tomspontoons  Месяц назад +1

      Usually the only fuses run for gauges will be for a depth gauge or fish finder powered off the key on power. That’s the only time I’ve encountered fuses on a gauge panel. Otherwise outboard associated fuses are on the engine.

    The seperate like 2 ro 4 wire harnes that says gauges at 1 end and to engine on the other end where does that go and the pigtails on the 703 yamaha control the up and down tilt where do they go from the 703 control

    • @tomspontoons
      @tomspontoons  9 месяцев назад

      I'm not exactly sure what wires you're referring to. The trim and tilt wires should be integrated into the 10 pin ignition harness that goes from the control box and plugs into the engine. We have a full video of installing a 703 control box on our channel that might help answer some questions!

    Where Can I find a wiring diagram for a Robalo R160? Has a Yamaha F70LA OB
    Would like to install a couple voltage gauges. One for each set of batteries. Your
    expertise is greatly appreciated.

    • @tomspontoons
      @tomspontoons  10 месяцев назад

      I’m far from an expert on that style of boat. I’d check with a Robalo dealer for contact them directly to figure out where those sets of batteries come into the console. Otherwise you could pull wire from each battery to hardwire a gauge set in off of a switch for each battery set.

    Do you need any special type of wiring (like a marine wire)? or can i use regular like trailer wire 14awg?

    • @tomspontoons
      @tomspontoons  11 месяцев назад

      I try to use marine grade whenever possible…copper tinned coated wire. Anything else may just not last as long before corrosion sets in. However, if it’s protected from chaffing and is sealed up at connections it should last a long time even if you used trailer wire!!

    Where do you get fuel tank kits? How would you wire two tanks to a gauge?

    • @tomspontoons
      @tomspontoons  2 месяца назад

      I use Moeller brand tanks whenever installing new on a boat. I'm not sure how or if you can wire two tanks to a single gauge. I'm sure there are gauges with two read-outs on one gauge face so you'd connect each tank's ground and sending wire to be able to get a reading for both tanks. Otherwise we've done one boat where we wired in two separate gauges to allow for two tanks.

    What do you hook your ground wire to. The boat?

    • @tomspontoons
      @tomspontoons  17 дней назад

      Never ground to the frame of the boat. The ground needs to make its way back to the negative post of the battery whether it’s through a ground buss bar, a common negative lead at the helm, or the motor ignition harness. With gauges, you’re wiring through the ignition harness, so using the ground that’s included in that bundle of wires is the best option.

    I'm getting no tachometer signal

    • @tomspontoons
      @tomspontoons  Год назад +1

      Double check that the green wire (tach signal wire) is attached at the gauge as well as where it’s attached to the ignition harness. Sometimes connections can come loose or corrode. Then double check that you’re getting power to the gauge from the yellow wire (key on power) and that the ground is connected.
      Beyond that I’d wonder if the gauge quit working and needs to be replaced.
