I’ve read both and lived it. So they both are right. Everyone’s experience isn’t the same.

It was about his family more than it was about life in Appalachia. I can’t stand the man, but the book and the movie was absolutely brilliant. The movie was one of the best movies I’ve ever watched…right up there with the colour purple, fried green tomatoes, and driving miss daisy. Unless you’re from Appalachia, just sit tf down.
being a child who grew up in addicted family is universally bad for you. You social emotional development does not happen. If you don’t address that you grow up feeling like a fraud and you will do Anything to gain acceptance. JD has not done the work to leave those old beliefs behind and grow socially and emotionally.

Mexican here. The fact that a female president won is because there were only two candidates, a coalition had to be formed to ensure either candidate's majority. Because the party who lost had a very good candidate who was female and had a lot of followers, the other party felt they also needed a woman to oppose her, never mind her religion (she is a puppet candidate to continue the last president's legacy, in my opinion.) A woman against a man would not have won, because unfortunately, this is still a very patriarchal/macho society. Therefore, Mexico does not have to teach the USA anything, just as the USA doesn't have anything to teach us either.
