I’m not sure if you still read these comments but really thanks for this reaction, it’s by far the most informative. I don’t know music theory and you explain the use of Ukrainian vocals, harmonics etc. much better than any other reaction video. I’d love if you could cover this more comprehensively, perhaps comparing Jamala’s 1944, Go_A’s Shum, Alina’s Shadows, Kalush’s Stefania, and Jerry and Alyona’s Theresa and Maria.
It’s unfortunate that you mentioned a Russian singer here. I know that you didn’t mean it in a bad way and that it’s been pointed out many times and you might brush this off as “politics” or “nationalism” but I’d just like to add some context for those who might want to learn about this. Russia’s entire pretext for this war (and other similar attempts in the past 3 centuries) is that “Ukrainians are just Russians, and there is no Ukraine actually”, so confusing Russians and Ukrainians in this context this really hurts. What people often don’t realise is that while Western imperialism worked through othering using racism (“you are different than us, worse than us, and therefore we have the right to rule over you and exoloit you”), Russian imperalism worked in the opposite way, by refusing Ukrainian identity and culture (“you are just like us, just worse, and therefore we have the right to rule over you and exploit you, but you will never be different and independent, you belong to us”). Both are of course wrong. Understood this way, confusing Russians and Ukrainians has a similar effect like endorsing racist remarks: it enables subjugation and destruction of a culture. But Russians were allowed to get away with it for centuries exactly because they managed to convince the world that Ukraine is just some (inferior) derivate of Russia. Which of course is completely wrong, if anything, it would be the other way round. But that’s why it’s important to challenge these things. (I’m not Ukrainian btw and I hope this doesn’t looo like I’m speaking for them, I’m just repeating what I have learned from many wise Ukrainians.)
Hi there! Thank you for your comment. I was quite emotional with this one because of how artists are either being used as pawns and/or censored. A lot of people were upset that I mentioned Samoylova in this one and assumed that I thought she was Ukrainian. I definitely mentioned her knowing she was Russian, but as an artist who was denied the ability to perform because of this war - more or less another independent victim rather than a representative for Russia (if that make sense)
@@TheMuserResolute Thanks for reacting! Sorry, I know that you knew she was Russian and I really didn’t mean to add another comment to reprimand you (sorry if it came across that way), rather just add some details to why this is controversial/hurtful, perhaps more for other visitors to your channel. I also know this might not be the place as your (fantastic) channel is focused on music and you maybe don’t want these discussions here. But I fear very much for Ukrainian culture and I think it’s important to defend it, as it’s under not just military but other, smarter, forms of attack, one of them is through the means of culture. In this sense, there’s a big difference between Samoylova and Ukrainian artists. Yes, Russian culture is now repressed by the Russian state, but it isn’t in existential danger, like the Ukrainian culture. Quite the opposite, Russian culture is being used (very cynically) to justify Russian imperial ambitions. I’ll quote the Russians themselves: Mikhail Piotrovsky, the director of the State Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg, said [about visual art but it applies to ballet, music etc. as well]: "Our recent exhibitions abroad are just a powerful cultural offensive. If you want, a kind of special operation, which a lot of people don't like. But we are coming. And no one can be allowed to interfere with our offensive." One striking visualisation of this was when Russian army bombed the theatre in Mariupol, under which hundreds of children were hiding, and then covered it with images of Pushkin. To “mark the territory”, to literally erase Ukrainian culture. So Russian artists not just indepensent, Russian state uses their culture as a form of soft power, to destroy Ukrainian culture, in addition to literally physically killing Ukrainian artists. Russian artists who Russia sends to compete and perform aren’t independent artists, they are carefully selected and always willing participators in this - the ones who we don’t hear about are the real victims. Which is why again it’s hurtful for Ukrainians to have their artists put in the same category. Btw, Pushkin himself wasn’t an independent victim: even though we now seem him as part of the literary canon, Pushkin in his time was directly personally involved in suppressing and ridiculing Ukrainian (and Polish and Caucasus) artists and there are many really vile poems by him and Lermontov and others who we never hear about and never read, but if we did, we would probably see them differently. (Btw, I’m not saying Russia is unique in doing this, of course not; but while we usually analyse British or French imperial artists critically, we are yet to do that with Russian imperial art.) There are entire generations of extremely interesting Ukrainian artists but a lot of their art we will never know about because Russia killed them, erased them and replaced them with Russian culture. Which is btw precisely one of the things that Alina Pash is singing about in her Forgotten Ancestors. So one way to honour them is to recognise how Ukrainian culture is now yet again at existential risk while Russian really isn’t, and not confuse these two things. I hope this make sense? Hi, correct. She was barred because the competition was held in Ukraine that year and she had apparently violated laws.
@@TheMuserResolute oh, exactly, I forgot. By the way, thanks for really cool reaction, appreciate that💙💛
Samoylova is russian, come on! you shouldn't make such mistakes, you know that's the topic which hurts to us
Yes. I know she’s Russian. She wasn’t able to perform because it was held in Ukraine that year
You should of left in the rant imo
I was weighing it up. I actually shot this video before Russian troops actually got into Kyiv. At the time I didn’t realise how bad this was going to get. I feel like I may have been a little insensitive in my rant, especially in a situation where I wasn’t affected.
Should have.
Samoylova it’s not Ukrainian 😡
I know. I meant Samoylova got banned as it was held in Ukraine that year. If it was not held in Ukraine, she would not have gotten banned
@@TheMuserResolute Julia was used by kremlin to show Ukraine as a bad guy. But Ukraine was a victim of russian aggression since 2014 (not since 2022 when it became full-scale). So russia choose a candidate that will resonate because of her difference. Unfortunately she was abandoned and forgotten just right at that moment when the goal was reached. There’s even a video somewhere on the internet where she says she feel betrayed. Ukrainian politics is like always defensive. Sometimes it touches our own people who are not honest in those insane days for our nation we have for the last 8 years.
Ahaha samoylova don't have anything with Ukraine) this is rusia singer!
Correct. I have gotten this comment a lot and there’s a misunderstanding. Samoylova was affected by the conflict.
My video was not in sympathy of Ukrainian performers, but a commentary on those who were unable to perform due to the conflict. Samoylova could not perform in 2017 as the competition was held in ukraine
@@TheMuserResolute this "conflict" called ruzzian invasion in 2014..
