Paulie's character was well designed. He was a man who had no family except an old woman. He had no wife or children who'd get hurt by his behaviour. So he didn't quite know what bullying really did to other people. You could really hate him for taunting fat people, or how he took Chrissy to the limits. He really became despicable over time.

Half of Tony’s problems were self inflicted, other half were Paulie, his mum, his son, Junior, Ralph, Tree Inches of Water, Manson Lamps, and NY. Don’t forget the Rat Pack including both Pussies. And more. Adding it up, Christoffuh was more of a liability to himself than anyone else, and there were times he showed some mettle and swagger that the other members of that pygmy thing in New Jersey wouldn’t have.
Steve schirripa was absolutely amazing in this series. His on screen presence improved with each passing season. In the end his character dominated the screen . One of the most underrated actors on the series.
Notice the difference between 1:42 and 3:06. When it's just him personally getting abuse from Paulie, he stands there and takes it, but when his wife and daughter were harmed, it takes multiple guys to stop him from getting hold of Paulie.

The actor that played Bobby in these scenes did a great job. You can hear the anger and stress in his voice when you push him too far. (Especially people who he cares about).
