- Historians prove that the battle on the field of Kuru, described in the Maghabharata, took place around 1000 year BC. And we accept this reasoned version.*
We, Ukrainians, are interested in the Mahabharata as the first written source where the Sakas/Scythians are attested as active participants in historical events, namely, the great worldview-religious and interdynastic conflict of Aryavarta [Mahabharata. Sabha Parva. Book 2:23-29 ].
The Sakas were respected among the warriors assembled at Kurukshetra, and the 'animal' metaphor of the Maghabharata fully applies to them.
Satyaki, the commander of the 200,000-strong Pandava army lamented before the battle: "I will have to face the Sakas, endowed with the same courage as Sakra (Indra), who are as furious as tigers and difficult to stop, like a fire that has gathered strength." [Mahabharata. Drona Parva. Book 7:109].
