Being from North Texas and watching those guys go from a local bar band to one of the biggest metal bands of all time was truly amazing! Will never be another Mighty PANTERA!! Rest In Power Abbott Brothers! 🇨🇱🤘
PanterA originally recorded Planet Caravan to go onto the Black Sabbath covers that other bands were participating in. But due to record label politics, it couldn’t happen. So they decided to put it on their album because it was an amazing track. Phil clearly stated on the album in-sleeve and in interviews that the reason they chose to place the song at the end of the record was to not disturb the flow of heaviness throughout the record and also that it wasn’t them changing their musical direction.
Thanks, Tim. I made my high school math team postpone our departure for the state competition by 2.5 hours so I could grab Far Beyond Driven on release morning before the trip. I told them I "had a dentist appointment".
This is a real treat to get some behind the scenes of this band. I was born and raised in the DFW area so i dont live far from where Dime use to live. Passed by the house twice in 2006 but did not bother his wife. For more behind the scenes watch 3 Vulgar videos on vhs or DVD.
Just listening to Dime play guitar made me feel like I knew him, and I was heartbroken when I found out he was killed. I can't imagine actually being a part of his life and to of lost him. Dime seemed like the coolest dude. Rest in peace Abbott brothers. Getcha pull 🤘🍻
I really wish he could find that pic of Dimebag throwing the guitar picks in the air. I bet it's really epic! Great interview, as always. You always allow your guests to talk freely without interrupting and that's a really awesome quality to have.
So, the effect you hear in the beginning of "cowboys from hell" is a phaser/flanger. Its a filter that sweeps the frequency range. You can set the speed of the sweep and the depth (how much coverage of the frequency range).
Great interviews Daniel. When I first saw your videos, I appreciated hearing from people who worked with Seattle bands. It’s cool to see you branch out and cover some of my other favorite artists. (Even though I know Alice In Chains toured with Pantera, but whatever!) I wish more interviewers would just let people talk without interrupting. This interview was awesome, informative, and fun. Keep up the good work. ✌🏻
The great southern trendkill was in c# standard for the bulk of it. D standard for a few and what I call octave g tuning. It's d standard but the bottom string is tuned down to G to match the 5 thing which is G (usually A). So the bottom string is pretty close to the lowest string on An eight string guitar. That's used on the last two tracks. In an interview with dime he said that it was purely to heavy it up a bit. Using drop tunings I mean. If you're playing along on guitar or bass and guitar and you can't get it perfect it's because they are tuned down to c# standard but back up slightly a few cents. So it's just a little higher. And that is true for damn near everything that's tuned down for them. Side note: if you attempt the octave g tuning don't gauge up your strings. Use 10-50s and adjust the neck. Upping the string size will take away from the looseness of the tone. And thats half the feel of the song.
So you're saying the same distance dime tuned DOWN from standard a couple tuning. 5hz roughly. You tune UP from c standard? the only way I've been able to get the tuning of this album is by tuning it to tens
@@Nissardpertugiu I just checked, both "I Am The Night" and "Power Metal" albums in E standard, except not - they're tuned in 430.0 Hz tuning. This carried over to "Cowboys From Hell" (track Primal Concrete is in Dropped-D). When we come to Vulgar, Dime's guitar tech Grady has said recently in an interview, that it was G# plus 40 cents, meaning 480.0 Hz. A guitar setup this way would sound almost like a standard E flat.

@@Nissardpertugiu When a guitar setup is in standard, the tuning fork is A=440. (Pianos are often tuned to 440 or 442.) You don't have to "think" I'm right, as you can go check like I did, with a tuner that allows you to adjust the cents. Dime's guitars were basically in standard tuning (close to E) up to Cowboys. A guitar with a floating trem feels very different if it's in E or E flat, but the feel of a Dropped-D can be considered as standard, only with the lowest string alone tuned down one whole step. Even if a guitar would be in E flat, D or even C# (like in Damageplan), the fine tuning is what we're talking about here. And if you listen to the records while playing your adjustable tuner, you can notice that it's never in 440. According to my ear, listening to each record for about a minute with a tuner at hand, the closest I matched the tuning was 430.. but with Vulgar, we know from Dime's guitar tech Grady, who set up all Dime's guitars, that the magic numbers are indeed G# plus 40. It's pretty cool listening to that note with the record, knowing that's what they used in the studio. According to Grady, this originally came about with lowering the tuning a little bit to match vocals, but then it stayed. drive.google.com/drive/folders/1HUVYUvV-_1RxzKBDeLsjS57Ioe_MT38_ Here's some more information on Dime finding the 1.2kHz cut from the mixing console, which became his sound, as well as using a Wizard tube amp in the studio (Grady answered me saying that tube amp blew up while making Far Beyond and they didn't use that tube amp after that).
phil never blow his voice because he was so accomplished I mean how he trained in clubs , with Razor white , and how he sang and came as far background is concerned you need to listen Power metal . You know , Judas Priest , Dio , Exciter , queensryche, Deep Purple etc... Breath support , mixed voice , Larynx technique , Open throat technique , chest voice / upped voice ...vibrato All that stuff . And phil had the genesis before that . Howlin wolf etc.. to janis joplin.. Metal bands today just take the direct influence of their subgenre .
I've seen both versions, with and without Rex. The night I saw them with Rex was at Trees in Dallas after seeing him jam Pantera tunes with Phil and BLS(Down opened for BLS)at Nokia in Grand Prarie an hour prior. We hauled ass after the BLS set and made it in time to see Rex's set. The time without Rex, they opened for CoC at a Dime and Vince tribute show in Arlington. I have pics of me, Pepper and Woody hanging out at Dime's house in DWG. I lived a mile from his house at the time and kinda know Rita Haney. Just enough to be allowed into the house lol.
I don’t think this guy had as much to do with CFH as he says. I don’t really think he had anything to do with it. You can’t find his name connected with Pantera, or CFH.Don’t blame me, blame Google

I loved this interview. Keep up the great work, man. I would love to see more of Pantera’s crew, maybe even Rex or Phil.
What a cool genuine guy. I really enjoyed the behind the scenes stories and insights.

This guy was an engineer at a studio we worked at on 1 album of overdubs only!! His memory seems a tad bit waxed on ..Thx Tim!!
Meaning what?
Tim should write a book on PanterA. Rex’s book reminds me of my own family.
Very cool, interesting...thank you!
Definitely some good people followed Pantera back then
