I’m waiting for Bob to make a guitar cabinet that displays all his guitars but behind like a plexiglass door to keep them from collecting as much dust as possible
After all these years I would stop what I am doing to watch every video from ILTMS to the end. I am thankful to you Bob (and the team)for creating such an entertaining and educational content.
Awesome project, Bob! The design is way cool. But if you're taking suggestions at all, I *highly* recommend cutting dados in your cabinetry where your shelving intersects. You will drastically increase the strength and longevity of your projects, especially in combination with pocket screw technology.
I really like how india ink looks on open grain wood. It's easy to get and inexpensive. All around good choice if you want something deeply black. New desk looks really good. Hope you enjoy using it! Thanks for sharing!
Years ago I made a Go game board and I used a fountain pen ink to color the board. It was a very unique red color that I couldn't achieve with other dyes and paints. Love using mediums for things that normally they aren't used for. :)
Bob, do you have any content on how you process prioritization and setting boundaries for your various efforts? Watching this channel scratches so many soul-itches of mine but I find myself floundering with actually setting up sustainable patterns of time to explore all these different projects. You have a family, you have a house with chores, you have work that has to get done to pay the bills, and you weave so many different passions into the spaces between. I’m flummoxed and fascinated to learn how you decide what get brain cells when and to what extent.
I don’t have anything about that, I guess I talk about it a lot on the Making It podcast. That certainly sounds like a pretty good thing to think through out loud on our second channel though. Thank you!
@@Iliketomakestuffno, thank you!! I know it’s not a hard science but if you know your MBTI or Enneagram, some content about knowing your own propensities and proclivities and how to know when to say no or yes to yourself to be successful. Again, thank you for being so generous with sharing your process and experience with all of us!
That’s an awesome desk! I’m really interested in seeing the storage solutions you come up with too. I’m currently planning to redo my husband’s “playroom” (I tease him because it’s so full of Star Wars figures) where he builds dioramas, puts together knives, and plays his video games. He collects so much stuff, and literally has bins full of rocks (and a whole lot more outside) that he uses for his flint knapping, along with the tools for that, all of his games, and tons of other things that need a place. It’s a bit overwhelming, but I’m thinking of building out a narrow column of tilt out bins for the rocks, then some combination of drawers and shelving for the rest. Anyhoo - I didn’t need to share all that, but I’m curious what your solution will be! 😁
Bob - nice design and the India ink finish looks great. There is a rather simple solution to help with “sag” on the big drawer. You already made a difference by using a strip of wood instead of the glue on edge banding. The thicker that edge band the stiffer it becomes. If you have not put a piece of the back edge of the tray and you have the room, I would add it now - rather simple. If you develop a sag issue, you can stiffen the next tray even more by making the edge band extend underneath the tray - think “L” shaped piece of aluminum. Add a piece to the front and back edge of the tray. Not hard and will stiffen the tray significantly. I am sure you are familiar with The Sagulator calculator - Google it if your are not. That’s a good place to start calculating “sag” for future reference
I am so envious of you guys that have the space to be able to process the timber etc using a shed-load of power tools. I would love a space like that - but until that time arrives, I shall continue to live vicariously through the medium of RUclips. :)
When using epoxy to fill wooden holes it makes sense to “paint” the holes with a small layer of epoxy first, let it dry and then fill it up. Otherwise the wood can suck to much epoxy up or let air release and make bubbles.
Hey Bob. With the keyboard tray, since, as you point out, the weight is only on the keyboard feet at the ends, you didn't even need that tray. You could have just made two small lips on the slide-out pieces and bolted the keyboard to the lips through the feet. That would have saved weight and cost of plywood while also giving you back 2-3 inches of leg height under the keyboard.
Awesome desk dude! I did my own desk also. I copied the design from Output Studio desk. Your speaker stands caught my eye though. They would match my desk perfectly. Did you design those also?
I recently made a 48" wide keyboard tray out of 3/4" ply and it immediately bent when I tried to press down on my keyboard in the center. The only fix I found was using 3/4" aluminum c channel across the front and back edge to add some rigidity. Worked like a charm!
I skipped the "tray" part completely, and just designed some 3D printed pieces to attach a keyboard directly onto (heavy-duty) drawer slides. The keyboard has a metal base plate, so it's stiff enough by itself.
Love the desk and Ive been using that style of drawer slides recently too and love them. Planning to put my mitersaw on drawer slides so its out of the way normally. For the keyboard drawer, any reason not to add at least a partial back to help with any potential sagging?
The desk looks awesome, and I've really been enjoying this little run of problem solving videos you've been doing. I had a couple of curiosities; first, is that the stack of cherry you split with Josh (and I think others) a few years back? Secondly, could the tray be reinforced with a strip of hardwood running across the underside?
I love using automotive clear coat and then polishing it to a mirror finnish , pretty much just piano black but with wood. just such automotive paint correction on you RUclips , works rely well.
I basically did the same thing a few months ago. I used underdesk drawer slides with a 2x4 as an extra standoff to get sufficient height. It works but not as smoothly as yours, and the extra knee room is not there. It's all that could fit in my space, though, so 🤷
Black stain: Bob probably tried a pigment stain. Those will most likely NOT give you a satisfying black. Try a DYE stain. I've been very happy after 2(3?) applications of black dye stain. But the ink looks great.
Loved the video but from start to finish I felt that the desk's height would be too low with that drawer and it did look like you had it resting on your knees in the end, that may be what you intended and if so, fantastic, but it would drive me nuts 😂
I found this on Dikipedia: "The biscuit joiner was invented in the 18th century by Guido Biscuido, an immigrant to England from Italy following the pastry pogrom in Naples. Guido was inspired by the reports in the Times of London of 'biscuits and gravy' as a breakfast originating from the United States. He thought he could emulate this idea in woodworking by using beech 'cookies' as the biscuit and 'yellow' glue as the gravy to join two boards together. His idea was a great success and the machine he invented to make the cavities was used across the globe. He later relocated to Germany and founded Festool."
I’ve been working on a desk, but for the couch. This is one channel I watch for creative and inspirationaly skillated content. What is skillated mean, you say? It’s the content that teaches you something you will use later without knowing you needed it. Clearly I need to watch more channels that offers skillated wordsmen and/if grammaterical content, but I hope you give the point.
My stupid brain saw the thumbnail, ignored what I saw and assumed a 50" computer keyboard was going to come and it kept me mega curious about the mystical beast to show up Bit disappointed when it finally showed in the video 😅
Hi Bob & team, if I could make a request; I would really appreciate it if you could reconsider the use of the beep sound at the end (@ 18:00). To me (and it seems to some others according to reddit) it is genuinely painful. If possible could you maybe look into using some other one (or at least lowing their volume)? 🙂

Yes! And has humidity control inside to keep the wood happy.

Fiebings USMC black dye - available in 4oz, 32oz, and 1 gallon. I find it to be just as effective as India Ink and more affordable.
nice tip, thanks!
16:48 this was the first moment I realized you were talking about a piano keyboard and not a really big computer keyboard 😂
Awesome project, Bob! The design is way cool.

If I had to guess, "biscuit" is british for cookie and they kinda look more like cookies so that's why they're called that.
I really like how india ink looks on open grain wood. It's easy to get and inexpensive. All around good choice if you want something deeply black. New desk looks really good. Hope you enjoy using it! Thanks for sharing!
9:52 best two seconds of a great video. I like how you showcased your musical talent there. 😂

Subscribing to the Making It podcast now as well 💪🏻🙌🏻
Would love to see the plans for those speaker stands!
I believe they are from a previous video so there may be plans for it if you search

That is a seriously AWESOME desk
Awesome desk Bob. Came out great. Really like the color contrast!

It took me about half the video to realise the keyboard that constrained the design was not the typing kind, but the musical kind.
Same. I was sure that a "full-size keyboard" has way more than 88 keys.
Happy holidays to you and your family!
It's like watching Marie Condo, but for Makers spaces and I'm here for it. The organization/changing is entertaining!
Great music in this one!! Loved the tool sounds working into the composition. Well done. Oh nice desk too 😂
Great looking desk!

Looks great Bob!!! Did you make your monitor stands too? They look nice with the desk.
The start of the video was next level, definitely vibing with it.

cool desk! but i really like those speaker desk stands, great design that doesn’t look too hard to replicate. keep up the good work
That is a cool project. Separately, that is a cool looking monitor -- what size is it?
Cool ranch bean 🫘
Why not add some shelving on the wall behind the desk. Things are near by, but your desk can stay tidy... In theory, hasn't really worked out for me 😂
Stunning desk, Bob! Beautiful work and fantastic design!!! 😃
Merry Christmas!
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Awesome desk dude! I did my own desk also. I copied the design from Output Studio desk. Your speaker stands caught my eye though. They would match my desk perfectly. Did you design those also?
You could add a center support under the tray. If you had to. 😊
I recently made a 48" wide keyboard tray out of 3/4" ply and it immediately bent when I tried to press down on my keyboard in the center. The only fix I found was using 3/4" aluminum c channel across the front and back edge to add some rigidity. Worked like a charm!

@ very cool idea! Unfortunately I have about half a dozen control surfaces for video/photo editing and 3d design, so a tray was the solution for me.
Love the desk and Ive been using that style of drawer slides recently too and love them. Planning to put my mitersaw on drawer slides so its out of the way normally.

Terrific desk build Bob! Happy Holidays to you and your family! 👍👍🔨🔨🌲🌲
Finally somebody plugging cookunity it's so much better than factor
Is that underwater screensaver you have on your Apple workstation, available for Windows?
Always wondered if you custom scored your videos. Could be a fun concept to explore with your musical abilities.
What is make & model of the monitor on your desk?
I love using automotive clear coat and then polishing it to a mirror finnish , pretty much just piano black but with wood. just such automotive paint correction on you RUclips , works rely well.
Desk looks good. I’d be a bit concerned about wood movement with how you attached the solid top. I’d use some figure 8’s or z clips.
You could have inset a metal strip under the keyboard to reinforce it from drooping or warping.
I basically did the same thing a few months ago. I used underdesk drawer slides with a 2x4 as an extra standoff to get sufficient height. It works but not as smoothly as yours, and the extra knee room is not there. It's all that could fit in my space, though, so 🤷
Never would have thought of india ink! Was it splotchy at all?
❤❤❤❤great video!
No safety glasses? Bob!!!!
Hey Bob!
Black stain: Bob probably tried a pigment stain. Those will most likely NOT give you a satisfying black. Try a DYE stain. I've been very happy after 2(3?) applications of black dye stain. But the ink looks great.
Home function/task efficiency is an increasingly common conversation in my house.
I love you champ🎉
How have I never noticed the rattle can display twirler in the background before?
👍
Biscuit in the UK is a cookie in the US....see the resemblance?
🎵 cool cool beans beans cool beans 🎵

5:23 coz it looks like a biscuit
I watch my videos in 2x speed. I'm about 12 minutes in as of writing this. It is a good video :)

change your space, change your life. totally true. quote me.
Another episode of Bearded DIY Perks.
As an IT professional it made my heart scream to see you poking your monitor.

I've always wanted a slide out tray for my K2500SX, but the damn thing weighs 72lbs.
Whatever happened with that space you had from a few years ago. and the other guy and girl you used to have on?
Watching Bob use the table saw without eye protection makes me nervous.
For real seeing Bob's children grown up makes me feel old :'v
You’re telling me that black paint didn’t come out as black as India Ink?
Please don't tap on your monitor, it scares the pixels.

No Domino? No Blum undermount drawer slides? Are you even a RUclipsr?
My stupid brain saw the thumbnail, ignored what I saw and assumed a 50" computer keyboard was going to come and it kept me mega curious about the mystical beast to show up
Bit disappointed when it finally showed in the video 😅

Can I have your old desk?
Awesome project, it is intellectually and masculinely enjoyable watching you solve your problems and bringing us along for the whole ride.
This dude just moves all the junk from one room to another and calls it cleaning. Lol. Jk
Why don't you use your intro anymore?
