It sounds like you enjoyed this book a lot. It's awesome ruclips.net/user/postUgkxbnOKZBE4evMO5V2vroHeCjq6d_MV6wJO that it taught you how to use tools and pick wood for your projects. I think the tips on making lists before cutting wood are super helpful too. You don't want to ruin your wood by cutting it wrong, right? Good job on building your own workbench! That's impressive for a beginner. You must be proud of yourself. blush

Jess has a point about how the light will change the color of the timber a lot. If it is still too dark once it is installed, a low wattage ceiling mounted led strip with a warm yellow hue right across the top of the cabinet face could brighten it up a lot.

When I do a scribing cut with my Makita track saw I run it backwards to reduce break out. This copies the scribing blade on large table saws which rotate in the reverse direction to the main blade. It's more efficient too as you do a reverse scribing cut immediately followed by the main cut.

Those corner units are the best, but Jess is right, they are so expensive. The way I see it, if you have a small space and you want to make the most of it, the places that sell those things know they've got you over a barrel! I'm really glad we put one in our little kitchen. We got an even nuttier one than yours, which uses every square centimeter of space in there.
If you guys ever have kids, you might find that fridge a touch small. Nothing you can do about it now! We have two kids, and when we did our kitchen we made room for one size larger than that. It's just big enough for us, and I'm happy we didn't shrink the cabinets to fit an even bigger fridge. You make do with what you have though.

When making cuts that need to be precise and without splinters or blow-out, I've always found that the visible face of the piece (the plywood panel) should not touch the plane of the saw. So your circular saw's plane was run along the finished side of the plywood and caused splinters, while the plane of the tablesaw runs along the underside of the plywood and had no such problems.
Another way to say it: with any rotating sawblade, you want the leading edge of the blade to contact the lumber such that the teeth rip/pull the fibres of the desirable face in toward the centre mass of the lumber thus severing the fibres neatly. If the teeth rip/pull out and away from the lumber there will be splintering.

G,day Scott Brown Carpentry from Sydney Australia.
    PRO TIP
When laminating you must ensure the spacer sticks or dowels are clean and free of saw dust. This could lead to a dropping on the surface which cannot be retrieved and cause a lump in the laminate.
However if present, a block and hammer tap may reduce the dimple on the surface.

You fellas are doing an incredible job, and the timber colour looks mint! Probably a bit late now, but you should swap the hinges on the fridge, so it opens toward the rest of the kitchen. That way you’re not having to walk around the door whilst cooking to grab stuff. It’ll improve the workflow in the kitchen heaps, but the way it opens now makes it easier to grab beers from the deck.

All that messing around with Formica - just buy a sheet of FORMPLY !- way cheaper way easier - had table like this for years & trailer base for transport units to site - works perfectly.
Backs of cupboards go INSIDE not on the back - keeps them square & when assembling - lay back on bench 1st to assemble Sq.
You Can get laminate glue but most glues tend to yellow over time - usually use clear silicone assembling the sink unit around bottom joints to help if you have water leak.
Also those plastic wind up legs are crap & expensive - make a ladder rail kicker assembly - holds & distributes weight WAY better & once levelled & in place makes install smoother.
Keep going Scott - ❤ that your having a go 👍
Oh yeah - chuck that huge impact / drill away & get some little light 12v 's WAY better for cabinetry

Great video, and a nice representation of how cabinets jobs can go. Few things. First I would just use a sheet of melamine for your outfeed/infeed tables. It’s cheaper, and WHEN it gets damaged you can flip it over and have a fresh side. Second, build an infeed table. Third, makita makes a melamine blade for track saws that works way better on veneered plywood too. Lastly, just pull the fridge out slightly for door clearance. The non-built in style units work better with more of an air gap around them. Good job so far though. 👍

I'm pretty sure when cutting ply with a portable circular saw or tracksaw the good face should be face down. But you might still get some undesirable chipping so the masking tape is a good idea!
On the table saw the good face should be face up.

We have a product in the states called minwax stain conditioner for oil based stains. It is supposed to help you stain more evenly, but what I have found is that it also thins your stain and brings it to a lighter more consistent tone. You may have noticed tackiness while ragging on and off- this product reduces tackiness and build up. I'd sand the ply lightly with over 120 grit if I can feel any grain, that will also lighten it up. For cost and performance, I can't recommend water based stains.
That blind cabinet looks like it has enough room behind the pull out to fit a reverse osmosis water filter. You probably don't need one with pristine New Zealand water huh. The rest of the world is full of PFAS. Enjoy it while you can.

When using the scribe function on a Makita track saw where it cuts 2mm deep you actually get better results if that cut is drawn backwards first then take a normal full depth cut as on a professional grade panel saw the scribe blades runs in reverse 👌

Hi Scott Assemled this year with help (I'm a retired Kiwi builder) Shipped trade depo flatpack kitchen to Cebu Philippines last year.
And as I see you looking at hardware drawings it reminded me of the difficulty we had assembling the draws. Myself my wife and 2 assistants (the finest brains in Philippines) 2hrs to assembling a single draw. So I can sympathize with you. It turned out to be simple only if it had said the fitting on draw front needed to be detached first.

The previous models of IKEA kitchens, before the new rail mounting system, there they recommended screwing a level board on the wall where the lower back part of the cabinets could rest on while mounting them. Then you just need adjustable legs under the front of the cabinets.
This makes it a lot easier to level the cabinets, they are already at the right spot in the back.

Everything looking nice. The great thing about renovating a kitchen is that you can build the cabinets in the garage - while the kitchen stays usable. Then demolition and installation can be done in a relatively short time (still too slow!). And the refrigerator is probably too small (just because).

I love the Hafele Axilo plinth feet! I use them all the time for my fitted furniture. Having that tool attached to a drill is a game changer, especially with larger cabinets that are extra deep & it would've been a struggle to reach to the back feet 😁 I'm surprised all the major kitchen companies here in the UK aren't solely using them! Great work guys 👍🏼

What I've found is that it's best to cut plywood upside down on a fresh surface when you want to keep the veneer nice. If you're cutting the right way up backwards first to cut the veneer.

Fantastic to see a video with the reality laid bare. So many videos focus on making it look easy hiding all the bad cuts, inconsistent materials, and self doubt over finishes.
I'm doing the same with our kitchen and everyone thinks I'm mad and keeps telling me just buy the flat pack kits.
People don't get it's about the learning, the journey, and if I'm honest a certain stubborn pride in doing it yourself.
Fridge is perfect for that size kitchen too.

Ha ha ha! Yes, the increase in self-confidence and the feeling of achievement is a life-long upgrade. (I scored some baltic birch ply just before russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. I won't buy anything made in russia now.) Finishes! Man, the amount of time I spent sanding, trying finishes and applying them! For the maple faces I went with a version of Osmo Polyx-oil that didn't darken or color the wood. Otherwise, Odie's Oil is my go-to for ease of application and non-toxicity.

Jess, I am keeping my overalls for best I am not painting in them, lady after my own heart….
Laser datum at what ever the height you choose is the best way too make sure your cabinets are level. Marked on the wall. Work surface covers the line 😉, if you draw it on. Your cabinets will be made from better longer lasting materials than most uk off the shelf cabinets which would be chip board. Plus you can have exactly what size you want no filler pieces
