Those black spots are actually a parasite. Very common here in wisconsin, even in panfish in inland lakes, they come from a bird. The fish are still safe to eat if you chose to do so with ones you catch.
Love ya chris. But i really cant get with people promoting bed fishing for smallmouth. Its just too easy. Nothing to be proud of ! And within seconds of pullung a bass off the bed. Gobies swoop in and slaughter the eggs.
