Good call, he played Peg... but we got Purdy and Marrota... maybe not available to be highlighted for the video... Everyone thats a fan knows he was there
I've watched this documentary a few times over the years. It's always amazing an funny. These guys were brilliant, and hilarious. I love a lot of different music, but Steely Dan has always been some of my favorite.
Walter spot on talking about songwriters and lyrics, quick to mention Dylan and rightly so. Steely Dan lyrics weren't always appreciated back then. I remember an interview from the 70s when they were critical of Wings' "Silly Love Songs", and rightly so! Compared to such gems as "Before the fall, when they wrote it on the wall and and there wasn't even any Hollywood". Who else would write about the earliest cave paintings? I digress but many thanks for your upload.
Thanks again for posting this awesome insight on the making of Aja. I could swear Steve Gadd appeared on the album, that's the rabbit hole I went down when I came across this video. SUBSCRIBED!
He did. He played one of the sickest drum solos ever on a pop/fusion record. He’s not in this footage because he did very limited sessions, played so great he just did one take and was out. There’s more footage of Bernard because he was around for more of the production. Gadd just happened to be in town and recording nearby so they got him in for a session. Whereas Bernard was on the whole album
@@sub-jec-tivI believe Steve himself said that they did 2 takes, 1 with the rhythm section, and then the final which was the one recorded, brilliant! Steve also did the peg sessions, and there’s an outtake out on the internet of Steve’s version of peg, and also on the outtake “Stand by the Seawall”, which is like a proto-Aja, you can definitely hear the similarities, it’s a cool demo/outtake. There is also a second version of “stand by the Seawall” with purdie on drums, and it’s basically a whole different song, but with the same name. I love steely Dan
Chicago may have introduced Jazz-Rock fusion but Steely Dan took it into the Stratosphere ! The “Pretzel Logic, Royal Scam, Aja Era” is My Most Favorite Steel Dan Albums !
Jay Graydon is the guitar player in black. He nailed the guitar solo fpr Peg! Once listened to AJA nonstop on a 12 hour drive from Redding CA back to LA. Always heard something new on the tracks. Genius - shear GENIUS. We'll MISS YOU WALTER!!!!!
AAAAAUUUUUGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!! They don't talk aboot "I Got The News", my favourite track on Aja. 8o/ I would have rather seen them talk aboot that, than see the two instrumental studio performances at the end. Unless I'm not seeing part 7.
I was going to say the same thing! I could've listened to them talk about I got the news for the whole 40 minutes. I think there must be a 7th part, though, because at the very end you hear the first intro notes to I got the News.
No mention of Michael Omartian nor Steve Gadd ... shocking and disappointing. Thanks Rick Beato for including them and all musicians in his love and education of this Aja thing I never liked ... now years later I respect it (but will never own it).
I agree with what you're saying about Mr and Mrs Suburb, but not sure what you mean by any real jazz musician not playing the real jazz in a club or performance. If not played in a club, then where? The best jazz was always played in clubs and not on albums because in clubs they can improvise, depending on their and/or the audiences' mood. Just my opinion :-) peace.
Then be more careful next time you post something!!! RUclips is designed only for accurate and factual information from the people who post on it. (ha, ha) I am totally kidding, dude! Sometimes I write stuff on youtube that I don't even remember! However, what you said regarding Mr Suburb is generally true, which I hadn't thought about when Fagen was talking about fake jazz. Good point, my friend. Later.
It is Steuart. Wiki doesn't say anything about him playing with S.D. but been with the Eagles since 2001. Too bad Don left. He was very good, but I understand he didn't like touring and concerts so they fired him. Steuart does beautiful guitar solos. Funny how he's always seated off to the right, not with the 4 main members. Like he's an add-on that hasn't quite gotten his stripes yet. Strange. Writes and produces too. is playing style fits into the Eagles perfectly. Many thanks - now I know.
James Keyes : Re: Don Felder: I realize your comment is now 6 years old, but in case you still aren’t aware of the primary reason for Don Felder leaving The Eagles, it was mostly about Henley & Frey’s greed and dictatorial hold over everything they did. Don Felder is a founding member but they walked all over him, even back in the 70’s. Anyway, I don’t know if you’ll ever read this reply or if you even care, but I just wanted to point that out. Don is a stand up guy. Edit: Don *Felder* is a stand up guy. The other Don, not so much, at least not before Glenn Frey passed.
Who is the young guitarist in the black shirt and glasses that does some of the solos? Is he now playing with The Eagles? Looks like the same guy. Anyone know?????
not 1 word on Steve Gadds amazing solo on "Aja"
There must be a story behind that actually
Good call, he played Peg... but we got Purdy and Marrota... maybe not available to be highlighted for the video... Everyone thats a fan knows he was there
He was more the old school Pretzel Logic/Cant Buy a Thrill era perhaps
@@kevinnugent6530 gadd claims he doesn't even remember playing the solo in interviews! "was i pleasant?" hahaha
@@keithsweat7513Marotta played Peg. Gadd played on Aja.
I love how Donalds body goes into Ray Charles mode when playing keyboard
Wow Walter was a nasty guitar player. Didn't know he was that smooth. The Josie performance towards the end is great.
Walter played one of the best guitar solos recorded by SD on "FM"
@@RADThird1 NO DOUBT! My favorite SD tune and he rocks it... No static at all!
Would love to hear all their albums released with only instrumental tracks.
You done hired the hit maker.
If only Purdie had a bit more self esteem...
@@lundswedenif I could groove like that, I’d have an ego, too.
He's humble

Steely Dan is our Mozart!!!
GreAtest musical album ever recorded by human beings.....ever....not even close! RIP Walter!
Man Walter Becker is such a smooth lead guitarist! What a boss!
It’s crazy how often they used session cats for bass and guitar. When he’s slick as hell. Just goes to show how specific they were in their tastes
@@sub-jec-tivEven when they did actual live shows early on, Walter usually played bass. Dude really sold himself short for a while
been listening to the dan my whole life, sounds better every year.
Love this jam. I can actually pray alongside !!!’
Wow this series is unreal...They have been my Fav since Can't Buy A Thrill.
My favourite album too!

Love that Peg jam session. Thanks for sharing
There is so much music I love from Bach to Pat Metheny. In my Opinion Asia is THE best popular music album of all time.
This is about Aja
Outstanding! Thank you so much for posting. This record is so good it sometimes makes me cry.
Should be in the top ten greatest albums of all time……
I like real jazz, and also fake jazz, and also, fake fake jazz, ya know?
Donald looks like a sinister scientist at the keyboards
LOL. Isn't he, though? Good observation!
He looks like a sinister scientist all the time!
Dr Evil lol
The pencil moustache helps too 😉

No it's not. The guitar player in black is Jon Herrington, he's been Steely Dan's guitar player for the last 20 years.
What was being cut with those shears?
Lol way to not know what you're talking about
Vanell Vocals Liked for the personal story and the R.I.P shoutout to Walter
I think it’s Larry Carlton!
ON POINT AND IN THE GROOVE!!!!!!!!!!!!
the perfect musicians in a perfect moment/s in time...

Hey Daryn, Where is Part 7 to this? Or is there one???
I do not think there is one.

John Herington
Jojje wadenius , the guitar player, a swedish guy

I tend to agree. I wish they'd concentrated more on the title track, especially Steve Gadd's drumming. Still insightful though.
Yeah, WTF? Steve Gadd, hello??
Thatis Jon Herrington--- did not play with Eagles that I know of
no hat-wearing indoors, hipster poser clones in this band!
smiling for good music

Rick Marotta , not purdie
