  • To the West, most of the legendary Soviet aircraft of the Cold War came from the design bureau Mikoyan Gurevitch, which spawned such aircraft as the MiG-15 “Fagot,” MiG-21 “Fishbed,” MiG-25 “Foxbat” and MiG-29 “Fulcrum.” The single best Soviet fighter of the Cold War, however, was Sukhoi’s Su-27 “Flanker.” Intended both to defeat U.S. fighters over central Europe in a NATO-Warsaw Pact conflict and to patrol the airspace of the Soviet Union against U.S. bomber incursions, the Su-27 survived the end of the Cold War to become one of the world’s premier export fighters.
The Flanker emerged as part of the high part of the high-low fighter mix that both the United States and the Soviet Union adopted in the 1970s and 1980s. In the U.S. Air Force this manifested in the F-15 and F-16; in the U.S. Navy, the F-14 and F/A-18. The MiG-29 “Fulcrum” played the light role in the Soviet partnership.
Sukhoi designed the Flanker with the capabilities of the F-15 Eagle firmly in mind, and the aircraft that emerged resembles the fast, heavily armed, long-ranged Eagle in many ways. Whereas the Eagle looks healthy and well-fed, the Flanker has a gaunt, hungry appearance. Although designed as an air superiority aircraft, the Su-27 (much like the Eagle) has proven flexible enough to adapt to interceptor and ground strike roles. Sukhoi has also developed a wide family of variants, specialized for particular missions but retaining overall multirole capabilities.
The Su-27 entered service more slowly than its fourth-generation counterparts in the United States (or the MiG-29, for that matter). A series of disastrous tests bedeviled the program’s early years, with several pilots dying in early versions of the Flanker. As it entered service in the mid-1980s, production problems slowed its transition to front-line status. And of course, the end of the Cold War curtailed the overall production run of the aircraft.
The Su-27’s capabilities are formidable. The Flanker can reach Mach 2.35 with a thrust-to-weight ratio above one (depending on fuel load). It can carry up to eight air-to-air missiles (generally of short to medium range; other variants specialize in Beyond Visual Range combat) or an array of bombs and missiles. In the hands of an experienced pilot, the Su-27 can carry out a bewildering array of maneuvers, many of which have delighted air show audiences across Russia and Europe.
The basic Su-27 frame has proven remarkably flexible. The Russian Air Force has modified most of its existing Flanker fleet with a variety of advanced avionics, improving its air-to-air capacity and also giving it an effective ground attack capability. Several Flanker variants have acquired their own designations, especially on the export side.

Some Correction: Su-37 was flying laboratory, it was never meant to be in serial production. Su-35 is the latest flanker variant.

not quite right. The Su-27M was the one and same as Su-37. The latter was more of an export designation.
But this Flanker was indeed aimed for serial production in the 90's. But sadly the break-up of Soviet Union and all the mess that followed, the Su-27M never saw daylight. The new Russian Federation was broke and broken. It never attracted any foreign export orders eighter. Besides the Chinese allready had bought the Su-27SK and some 2 crew Su-30MK2 produced by KnAAPO.
A little later India bought the Irkutsk made Su-30MKI.
there existed 6 Su-27M(Su-37) and those was used by Sukhoi for further evaluation and testing.
The Su-27M/37 was then morfed into the Su-35BM prototype which first flew in february 2008. By then it was extensivly improved and the Russian Federation was back on its feet, ordering new fighters. We all know this to be the Su-35S by now, being ordered by several countries as well.

I remember when I first discovered this plane as a teenager in the mid '90s. I found a 1/35th scale model kit of it in a hobby shop. I must have stood staring at the box wide-eyed, turning it over in my hands, incredulous at how unbelievably cool this jet was, for a good 15 minutes. That model's still sitting on a shelf behind me as I type this.

My grandpa used to construct the engines for SU-27. He rose to the assembly workshop chief deputy... if I translate it correctly. Left the bureau in early 90s, when everything turned to utter shit from just shit, that the USSR was. He used to live near the factory, so I spent a lot of time in the vicinity, and never knew, what was going on there. Funny, that this location is one of my favourite in whole Moscow, it's really pretty place, not very far from VDNKh subway station.
I can recall a couple of his stories.
Before the soundproofing was installed in the building, they used to test engines inside, during his break. He played the volleyball outside. Then the tremble started, the whole place was shaking and made it literally impossible to do anything... so, excuse me, no volleyball that day. The noise was heard quite far away actually, including the houses near the factory. Not the most comfortable place to live:D
They used to polish the inside of the round parts using titanium balls and some kind of alcohol based liquid. I guess there was something else, but, welcome to Russia, the alcohol part is the most important here. After the polishing was done, liquids were drained. Now the fun for workers started. The liquid was of unhealthy dirty consistency, the chaps on the factory filtered it through some layers of gauze. After that it turned to still unhealthy yellow. Than, the bravest one tried the damn thing and... surviving the "sampling", gave a positive node to others, with some kind of "good" grunt. Needless to say, my grandpa never drunk that shit, in his eyes you have to be a complete animal to drink such a goo.
He died 1,5 years ago, and I still miss him. He was a scary dad to be around, but the best grandfather you can wish for, loved him to death, and he made a huge influence on me. He was very proud to work with the AL31F engines, and also very proud of knowing Arkhip Lyulka in person, also referred to him with respect by Arkhip Mikhalych. My mom said, that grandpa sometimes walked around the house talking to himself thinking of engines and drawings, which for me is very funny and understanble at the same time.
Well, that's my little connection to this beautiful plane, regardless of any ideologies or warmongering, of which I support none, SU-27 is a brilliant masterpiece of engineering, and a showcase of the beauty of the human mind.
P.S. Brother, your Russian words pronunciation is extremely funny:DDD And video is great as always)

I heard Sukhoi wasn't really the favourite back then during Soviet era, because they were not devout communists. When the Soviet Union collapsed, Russia started preferring Sukhoi over Mikoyan. In recent years, Sukhoi made newer versions of the Su-27, and Su-25, and also started making the Su-57 and civilian transport jets. Now with the coming of the MiG-35, and Mig-41 project, Mig might make a comeback. There's also the new variant of the MiG-31 capable of using the Kinzhal ALBM. Very interesting.

good day; going into the SU27 vs mig29 concepts. from my understanding su27 is meant as an offensive fighter where as the mig 29 is meant as a defensive fighter. This differs from american doctrine regarding air superiority. as the su27 is meant for penetration and thus carries the most advanced sensors and EW suites. As russia is so darn large and can be attacked from so many areas, they needed a more numerous, cheaper shorter range fighter for defense. Thus the mig 29 was designed to rely on ground based sensors and weight and cost savings could be realized by limiting its sensors and EW components and maximizing its aerodynamic capabilities.

    • @p51mustang24
      @p51mustang24 6 лет назад +1

The mig29 is an interceptor, much like the older F-104 starfighter. It's primary role is as a fighter than can be scrambled rapidly and enter the air quickly.

Su-37 isn't the most recent model. It's technically just a one-off technology demonstrator for the improved flight control system. They pretty much ditched the canards for the production Su-35S to save weight and the thrust vectoring nozzles are already there anyway.
It's also noteworthy that while the airframe design is mature, its sheer size lends itself to immense growth potential as seen through the years. In fact, it can be configured to be compatible with NATO weaponry upon the request of the client(Usually Thales, Saab and Rafael hardware)

    • @Nonameman0001
      @Nonameman0001 6 лет назад +6

Agreed on this. The 37 is by all means just a tech-demonstrator. One of the small reasons the canards were removed for the 35S was because the airframe materials used for it were light enough to offset needing the canards in front for added lift, hence why the canards were removed.
The Su-35S is, for all intents and purposes the definitive model for this jet, Sir Matsimus.

Matsimus, just a quick correction. The Su-35 is more advanced then the 37, because the terminator was based off of early models of the Su-35. The current Su-35 was upgraded based off of the terminator, meaning it is act more advanced. Also, while this is not confirmed, it is speculated that the Su-35 cockpit interior is classified and the version we see is just out there for the public to see.

Very different with su27 which is heavy fighter
But interestingly, su27 can fly slower than mig29, and more manuverable in slow speed
Still can do some sudden movement / manuever even at almost zero speed

Not even f22 can do sudden manuver at near stall speed

Russian plan always have a sleek and curve in their design and overall shape giving it an elegant feeling while US plane give more of an edge, flat and a "futuristic" feeling i guess ? Well, correcting some of Su-27 family variant mentioned in the video
not all Su-30 equipped with Thrust Vectoring, most of them don't have it. Some variant that have is the MKI, MKM and SM with the SM being the latest Flanker variant.
the Su-35S dubbed The Super Flanker. Equipped with Irbis - E Passive Electronically Scanned Array Radar with 400 km detection range against non stealth target not Pulse Doppler and the Canon were retained.
Su-37, sadly just a Technology Demonstrator built back in 1996 using Su-35 (not the current S variant) airframe and they modified it with new Radar, Hotas system, Canards, new engine with thrust vectoring and Pilot with balls made out of Steel. The experience of Su-37 leads to the current Su-35S and Su-30MKI, MKM, and SM.

      Canada is NATO.
      1. The Russians would never compromise the integrity of their military technology by selling to a NATO country.
      2. The Canadian government can't even replace the CF-18 A/B variants without screwing it up. Don't hold your breath for any new aircraft any time soon.
      3. The Su-27 is an impressive platform, but it's not the most capable platform. What Canada should be looking at is the newest variant of the Boeing F-15 SE. (Silent Eagle). It employs stealth characteristics and brand new avionics and weapons systems.

I suppose he tends to not talk at all of things he thinks that are crap like, say, the Italian MBT Ariete (note: I am Italian, and I'd like to say otherwise, but the Ariete is a bit crappy) - in his judgement of the various machines.
The Su-27 family is one of the most beautiful aircraft shapes ever designed, the pinnacle of the "4th generation" machines (before the obsession for stealth clogged designers' minds and produced the F-35 and its even uglier competitor, the X-32) and denying it would just be stupid, as it would be stupid denying that the F-14 was/is just as beautiful and it, too, a hell of a machine.

The Su-37 isn't actually the latest variant nor that it's an official production variant, it's merely one off technology demonstrator. The Su-35 timeline is actually T10S > Su-27 > Su-27SK > Su-27MK > Su-30KI (this is the cancelled single seater variant for Indonesia) > Su-27SM > Su-27M2 (early variant of Su-35, also knows as the BM variant) > Su-35S (current). It's complicated because then the Russian have their own domestic upgrade program of Su-27SM all the way to the current SM3.
Also the Chinese has started to induct their Su-35 into their service with Indonesia following close in the future. I'm disappointed you didn't mention the most important features of Su-34, a kitchen, working toilet, and massage chair.
