- For 450 years, no one knew where the Swedish warship Mars, named for the Roman god of war, sank in the Baltic Sea. The largest vessel of its time went down in a fierce battle in 1564 with more than 800 people aboard. Its discovery in 2011 yielded an astonishingly well-preserved ship, including the seamen who went down with it.

It's absolutely amazing how the cold northern waters keep these wrecks so well preserved!
Check out the finds in the Black Sea, they've found intact ships over 2000 years old!
Apparently the water has no oxygen past a certain depth, so there's no organisms eating the wood.
Indeed I wonder how Titanic would have been in these types. Probably not as bad, & Human remains on that too still. If it was still in Shallower waters.
I love how the temperature of the water and other factors (salinity?) have kept the wreck free from subsea growths and organisms which invariably cover every square millimetre of wrecks, giving a clear and unhindered sight of the wreck in it's astonishing detail!
This truly is a remarkable time capsule for divers, marine archaeologists, historians and others with a personal or professional interest in this wreck and it's state of preservation.

I wonder if any government or research group has considered raising it, as they did the Mary Rose? She's not very deep, so it should be possible.

It's crazy to see the bones, knowing that no one ever knew who they were, nor will they ever.
well they have the ship's register. might be possible to guess the age, but thats about it. atleast we know their story...

Actually technology can Identify these people easily
If they have bones, they can do bone scans, just like they've done on bodies found in pyramids.

Henry the Vlll died in 1547. I believe his daughter Elizabeth the 1st was ruling then.

The only other sunken ships I have ever seen in this kind of condition after hundreds of years have been in cold, deep, Fresh water graves. Wow.
Yeah, the baltic is amazing in that way aswell, its too cold for wood eating parasites and since its so deep where the wreck is, it hasnt been effected by waves either, quite remarkable.

This wreck is in an utterly fantastic condition of preservation, and it's possible to see crystal clear details which one wouldn't expect to still be visible!
The interviewee was correct when he said that the wreck was a time machine, and I hope to see a much longer documentary on this magnificent vessel.
Edited to say that in gold coins alone, the ship's cargo is currently worth 2.86 Billion Euros!
This exceeds the 660 Million Euros value of the 20 Tons of gold ingots carried on the sunken Japanese I-400 Submarine whose intact wreck has been found!

Don't feel bad that no one today will ever know the names of many of these men. Because they died with men who did know who they were. They were brothers in arms and brothers in the next world. There is a bond soldiers have for each other that often stronger than actual family. These men fought and died for their homeland and for each other. Incredible condition of that wreck and the first time I have ever seen actual canons still coming out of gun ports of a old sailing ship like this. Its incredible to see how well preserved it is. I would love to see some of the canons recovered and conserved. I bet they are glorious.
It always makes me sad to hear about hundreds of sailors going down with their ship

Fascination with this great ship wreck has brought a about some actual event that transpired during the moment that occurred in battle long long ago.

That is a gravesite really, not just an interesting wreck. Those were real people with real lives.

@@jfk3465that’s not how that works. Sometimes sites like this are considered mass grave sites or memorial sites since it’s considered their final resting place. For example, many people petitioned to make the site of titanic a mass memorial site which would have made it illegal to disturb or take items from
absolutely amazing, what a beautiful ship but such a dramatic ending. it's very good preserved, really a time machine.

There is a small exhibition about the ship in a museum in Västervik, Sweden.

The bones of ancient sailors. From a time gone past. Then the only thing left is old historical relics. With a certain mystical whimsy about it.

The Art Mueseum in STL has a bunch of coins in an exhibit. They have ancient Roman, Grecian,Egyptian, and one pre-egyptian. Fascinating to see, totally wanted to take one though 😂
No rest in peace here, history prevails long after the dead and the loved ones are gone.

they have historical value also not just the value of silver.
Coins recovered from a shipwreck often have a value multiplier. Take that into account, deduct the fact that a huge new supply becomes available and the value may move only slightly up or down. As always the condition of the coins will become the real way values are determined after the above factors are determined.

What an amazing short clip the preservation is incredible I hope there is a full arciological survey and recording of the ship and crew I would love to watch that as would many people I garentee 👍🏼🇬🇧
the Baltic sea is great for preserving ships. I wonder if warships of this age have been declared graves for the seamen and soldiers who were on this vessel?
I hope those men who went down with their ship got to see another life; maybe on a distance Earth in a galaxy far from here.

Look up the two Franklin ships. They still have furniture and bottles and plates on the shelves and muskets on gun racks on the walls.
This wreck is older than the titanic and looks much better condition....

These underwater videos are wonderful. We need to send divers into the lakes where families were relocated during the hydro electric building. Their family homes are in these lakes.
Also require a specialized effort for filming inside the Albuquerque Aquifer. Jacques Cousteau would. Have we lost our sense of adventure and exploring challenges?

***** Yeah, that makes sense. The coldest water I've dived in was around 50 degrees Fahrenheit, and our air was gone pretty fast, so they wouldn't have been able to stay down there long.

It’s so fascinating how well preserved this is in comparison to other shipwrecks such as the Titanic, which is slowly deteriorating away after only a century. What makes the difference?
The titanic is made out of steel which deteriorates in salt water.
I love to see all the artifacts and antiques they should preserve them , and on other hand all these wrecks are someones grave and I feel like its grave robbing

One silver coin is valued at 13,000 Euros. But there are 220,000 of them according to the records.
Well, if they recover all 220,000, then that "quite a heap" will be reduced in value because they will no longer be as rare.

There are plenty of bones down by the titanic. People just refuse to film them because everyone is so sensitive now.

@@mikemiller539 Ships and boats are generally considered as "female", they get female namnes and so on. There are some exceptions, modern warships for example. This is common knowledge.

We had a raceboat sink and was lifted about 30 years later plus it was a vintage hydroplane at the madison gold cuo race in the 1970s

I used to raise approx.30 acres of sweet corn,not only were raccoons a problem but also coyotes would eat the corn as well as a problematic bear!

So either National Geographic pushed him to say this or this archeologist doesn't realize that if there are suddenly 200k of these coins, then they are worth far less than 13k.
The question now is could the ship be raised and preserved like the Vasa or Mary Rose

ive been trying to find out ,what happened to the big ship that was Anchor just south of the bridge in st Louis MO. at about the area across and up river from the Arch. it was a big aluminum looking ship , like a floating casino, ?
A minesweeper, sank in 93 wreck is often visible, just last year it was out of water due to low levels
