Parody of the Vichy anthem "Maréchal here they are!" in front of the RN headquarters in Paris (07/3/2024, France)
On July 3, 2024, a group of demonstrators sang a parody of the Vichy anthem “Marshal, here we come!” in front of the headquarters of the National Rally (RN) in Nanterre. This event attracted attention because of the symbolic charge of this anthem, once used to glorify the Vichy regime during the Second World War. The parody aimed to criticize the positions of the RN, perceived by some as heirs of the French extreme right.
The demonstrators, around thirty people from various anti-fascist collectives, sang this modified version of the anthem to denounce what they consider to be a rise in xenophobic and authoritarian ideas. The action took place late in the afternoon, quickly attracting the attention of passers-by and the media. The police intervened to disperse the demonstrators after a few minutes of chanting, citing disturbances of public order.
The RN reacted through its president, Marine Le Pen, describing this demonstration as a “scandalous provocation” and affirming that her party has no link with the Vichy regime. She denounced an attempt at defamation orchestrated by political opponents.
This incident occurs in a tense political context, a few months before the European elections. The RN, which seeks to reposition itself as a government party, must face recurring accusations about its past and its links with the far right. The images of this demonstration, widely distributed on social networks, have relaunched the debate on historical memory and political heritage in France.
