  • The first Artemis mission has been launched toward the Moon - NASA’s CAPSTONE, or “Cislunar Autonomous Positioning System Technology Operations and Navigation Experiment.”
CAPSTONE is expected to reach its intended orbit -- a Near-Rectilinear Halo Orbit -- on Nov. 13, 2022. It'll spend about six months verifying the stability of the orbit, which is the same one that NASA plans to send the Lunar Gateway space station in 2025. CAPSTONE is also expected to communicate with the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter to verify a spacecraft-to-spacecraft navigation technique.

With Artemis 1 expected to launch as early as Aug. 29, I’m making a series of videos leading up to that mission. The first is over CAPSTONE, a CubeSat currently on its way to the Moon to verify an orbit for the Lunar Gateway. Let me know what Artemis mission you are most looking forward to seeing fly. 🚀
