- In today's video, we are going to be going over consistency and how important it is to not throw away every story idea you don't like. Too often, inexperienced comic/manga/webtoon creators switch projects, ultimately never committing to any one idea. Joining me today is Chris Burns, the creator of the manga series Chikara: Power of God. Currently, Chris Burns has 3 volumes of his manga for sale (paperback and ebook formats.). Chris and I will be providing writing tips and tricks for choosing ONE story idea to stick with and further develop. I could make a potential reccomendation that you could refine that idea and find a way to integrate it into your story
This video is a great solution because I used to have that sort of habit of ditching one series for another simply because of either a lack of interest or my lack of confidence in my art. But now I try to make at least 5 pages of manga just to keep myself steady.

This video was very inspiring, I've been working on this idea that I've been hoping to develop into a manga and this video has helped me to gain the extra confidence needed to take that next step. It's been difficult for me being in high school to both get consistent grades and to create manga as both are time consuming and a few years ago I was expecting myself to create a chapter a week like a professional but also have straight A's- which is unrealistic. So thanks to both of you :)

I really needed to hear this as i aspire to create my own manga but I'd always said i"d wait until i become a better writer to start and this was definitely the kick in the butt i needed to just get started and learn as i go and great video!!

The BOXER and DICE are two webtoons that inspired me personally.. the art is arguably C tier or B tier..but the story is S tier. These are examples of creating something truly special, where an audience can overlook caliber of art if the caliber of message and themes can do the heavy lifting..this loop you're in keeping punching through it, success isn't a straight line, success is a series of spirals going right, left, dipping and rising..all these spirals head towards the same general direction when you zoom out a bit. Use these spirals to pierce the heavens.

my art isnt up to par lol, but my writing is god-tier... i think artists should start now, but i dont think they should publish till their good enough. i have a 50 chapter manga outlined, its gone through 4 revisions, ive got 5 chapters of 50 already storyboarded, and already know what the last 3 panels on ch 50 will be. i know its going to take maybe a month to 3 months to finish storyboarding all chapters. roughly a year to 2 years to finish line art, and another 3 to 6 months to color,shade, and finalize. im not trying to make the next my hero, but i know that my work can be comparable to chivalry of failed knight or high school of the dead and it's max potential would be cautious hero, slime, or konosuba. i dont expect success overnight, but i have confidence in the product that i will release in 2023 the soonest, 2025 the latest. ive practiced my art for a year, its better than mob psycho and ping pong, its maybe 90s sailor moon and code geass quality.. im almost there, but i dont want to disrespect the reader, myself, my story, with mediocre effort. if youre a young person reading this, start practicing, write your story, follow your dreams but... suffer in silence, dont publish or seek instant attention, respect the work, respect the process, and respect the reader. create a story that inspires yourself now or inspires some stranger that needs the story only you can tell. your art is good enough, if you can honestly say, ya id rule 34 that, thats my waifu. dont be perfect but on the same token dont be crap. if youre honest with yourself, how much time is this hobby worth, 2 months, 1 year, 5 years.
me personally, my commitment to this hobby on top of a normal 9 to 5 job i can do for the next 20 to 30 years. Ive got 3 stories that I'm dying to write, story 1 (50 chapters) story 2 (100 chapters) and story 3( magnum opus 300 chapters). Young person.. if youre gonna make something special, even something good, its gonna take sacrifice,commitment, and a little luck. young person, we may never meet, but i hope 5 years from now, or however long its gonna take, i hope to read something of yours that brightened my day, made me think, or helped me become a better person. young person i may never read that story, but i hope that once it's ready, and has over 10,000, 10 million readers, it reaches that one person that it's meant to reach and it changes the direction of that individual's life. As a freelance illustrator and busy with college, I’ve improved organizing my ideas on paper and taking notes on my schedule BUT my one excuse with jumping around with my stories is that I’ve afraid of judgement. Is my story diverse enough, relatable, sensational, etc? But I try to remind myself “do this Bc YOU love the story and stick to the CORE message of that story ”! 😁 I needed this video and see the comments of others that relate ❤️ Thank you !!

It took me roughly 8-10 years to settle with my concept for my story. At first coming up with the subject matter was the hardest part. Now I have a sense for what my story is. Once I write more of it first of course. Currently I have 7 pages which is good because years ago I couldn't get past 1-2 pages. I'm striving to push my story, ideas forward. At the end of the day I hope my folks, friends and anyone interested can enjoy what I made at the end of the day.

The part about being an artist who gets bored of their own ideas easily is definitely me, cuz I keep coming up with ideas for stories and I anguish over what to do next because of that.
Or I used to until I landed on my big idea that I liked way too much for it to simply be not made.
Still got plenty more ideas for stories, but for now, I’ll just work on the idea which is most important to me.

This video is truly great! Amazing advice and points raised. I have recently sparked an interest in making my own Manga and telling my own stories and so far I haven't really done anything for any of the stories I thought of because I'm always beating myself for not making it good enough and not sticking to one idea. It was really cool to listen to you guys speaking about trying out different things and taking it slowly, I feel much more inspired and motivated after watching this video and will definitely implement the tips you have given in my writing/manga endeavours

Hi I saw your videos from studying how to make mangas and from commenting. I have made some progress but haven’t posted it YET because I just started. It is related that it is just introducing a series as a prequel one shot targeting one big secretly huge subject. It does take a lot of time and art style is difficult. Thank you for the video! Recently I had thought of a new comic idea that I really love and am excited fot, a story about a new student who is trying to discover her family's past and find proof that she can belong. I'm particularly excited for it because I want it to promote friendship and I really like the magic system involved, the key to using them is concentration and magic books.
But recently I've been starting to fade from the project, I think it's cause I'm over thinking the Mystery element and I'm struggling to try and think of I should do a one shot to introduce the comic first. And if so I'm still not even sure how to do it or what the main character should be doing... now my head hurts bleh 😖
Thank you for taking the time to share! Writiing can definitely be hard sometimes haha. My best advice would be to simplify things a bit to make it easier on yourself. Mystery in itself is a hard genre to write and you'd need to figure out and plan the entire mystery before you even start the project. Your project sounds more like a series then a one shot so unless you're really set on making a one shot, I don't think its particularly necessary. I would just try to make things a bit easier on yourself and focus on the elements you do like! Best of luck!

I had to drop an idea because my writing was AWEFUL and I started without any sort of idea to what I wnated to do with it....now I have an idea but I am still giving another idea a shot. [a simpler story idea, since my other one is a tad complex]
Also the advice of doing different things that add to your project...I mean, as a solo creator you kinda gotta bounce around if you wanna make decent pages. lol

Exactly! It's completely fine to experiment until you find an idea you are passionate about! It's important to keep in mind how often you are bouncing around though before falling into a continuous loop! At the end of the day that comic isn't going to get made until you make it! It was the same for me. I have an upcoming manga project that I've worked on since my 6th grade year even though my art wasn't pro-level.
At some point I was told "focus on something else" and I still kept fighting. Even though my manga wasn't really published, I'm glad that I've made it
This was an excellent video! Confirms a lot of the thoughts I've had about writing my story, which was quite encouraging. Especially when you were talking about not scrapping ideas. I've kind of designed the story structure and world in a way that allows me to explore a ton of different ideas within the framework of one story. I've also just settled on making it for myself, regardless of success and that's taken the pressure of entirely. More difficult when you struggle with your dayjob, though, I understand that. How did you build up the courage and confidence to actually try and get your comics published?
Thank you for taking the time to leave a nice comment! I really appreciate it! As far as your question goes, I don't think there's ever a "right moment" in anything in life. I think I had my first comic strip published when I was 16. I've just always loved art and creating comics and telling stories. When you love something you want to see how far you can go ya know. I just started submitting stuff to contests. I got rejected a few times but I've also succeeded in others. Once I got a bit older I started seriously pursuing publishers and establishing myself as a professional. The confidence comes with time after doing the thing you're passionate about for a while. I've never really thought of rejection as a waste of time because I was constantly practicing and getting better. Hopefully that helps haha

I'm pretty happy with my current project and setting, especially because the setting inherently let's me tell any kind of story with the setting and characters, given the kind of world it is. So new ideas can either expand the current narrative, if they fit, or simply be scheduled as a story arc for once I'm done with the current arc :)

Even tho I don't have high expectations for my story which i am making now, i still feel like i could make something realy good. In my opinion it is very unique and a lil bit of mix of some other stories without me noticing them. I told some of my friends about it and they liked it and gave me good advices even tho i didn't decribed it good enough to them. All in all, my story may not be the next One Piece, but it will deffinetly be my best creative piece.

I am not exactly sure at which point of making my story I wrote this comment, but I can tell you that I am still making it, just at a slower pace. Unfortunately, I still haven't started officialy releasing it due to lack of digital drawing skills and necessary tools and programs for doing that. So far I managed to connect most of dots in the story and write down the events of first 2 arcs, but the biggest problems are few plotholes and names. I kinda struggle to come up with good names for many characters. Also my artstyle has really improved over the past two years thanks to some short tutorials for which I am thankful. The closest thing I did to an official release was drawing 3 pages of a certain fight in the story. Each of those pages took me multiple hours to draw so I cannot imagine how long it would take me to draw entire chapters since I wanna make each chapter be about half an anime episode long. When it comes to power systems I believe I am done with adding new ones since I already got few of them, out of which most are defined to a certain degree. To finnish this reply I can tell you that the biggest change during these 2 years since my comment got here was changing the name of my story from Heroes to Heres due to some other comic also having that name. It's not a huge change physically, but it has now more meaning to the story and plot. Besides creating the story I also tried making music for it. So far I made 2 tracks which actually sound good, but I am still struggling with 3rd one since I don't know how to finnish it. Don't give up! Everybody starts somewhere! I didn't post my first comic online until I was about 14, but that's because I've been practicing all of my life.

I had the same problem back in the days, I started to make a psychological/ mystery manga,but never finished to complete the first chapter as I was distracted by a new story idea and dropped both of them 😅 luckily a year later I again came up with a new superhero story and luckily i completed the first chapter without being distracted

And I don't have enough time to do both
One is about a much less good stand power system like thing
And another with a very complex power system wich makes my head hurt writing it but I love it

For me. I’ll write it down a summary of my story on paper instead of drawing because if I write it on paper I can come back to it or change a few things instead of writing like five drawing pages or be confused on what I was doing if I can’t figure out what’s happening.

I have about 15 stories that I deleted
Right now I have 2
They have all had the same power system with a few edits and different themes

This semester I came up with another idea for the overworld I'm creating, and I decided that manga would be the best format to tell this one in particular. So I've been having fun outlining the story and the characters, setting it on a certain place and time. The story I wanna tell: Another side of a previously established world, because I wanna flesh out the places, history and culture through different media, and the premise is fun to me, new girl in town, with aliens.
Once I'm sufficiently satisfied with the story, I'm shelving it for when I'm done with the books, the first impression of the overall world for the audience. Patience, patience, it's all carefully calculated in a -chaotic mess- master plan.
Then I thought of another idea in the same manga, for a side character, but knowing myself, I put that one as a spin-off. So now I have a light(?) slice of life that's resembling a shonen more an more, and a secondary rom-com planned for the future.

Great video , but I have a question , I can’t start a story because I don’t know which world style I can do , like , dark godfather story , a travel story or even a slice of life , I can’t chose what is done for me , it’s not that I’m chasing the perfect , but the perfect for me , what is done for me , what I want to tell and how
My best advice is to try each and see which one you like the best. Other ideas are always going to pop into your head, so finding a story that you can connect with is important. Inspiration is temporary, it's mostly about discipline once you get going! Best of luck!

I’m still trying to find that one story I want to stick to, because I had 5 little ideas, which never went pass the name, one where I got to storyboard, then stopped. And one which got to one chapter and stopped…
But, hopefully this new story I made. Will stick, I want it to! I made it so enjoyable for me to do, so I’m going to follow your advice, to help solidify it as The Story. I hope, I come back later in life to say; *Life& Melody: Ichibu no hīrō no heikin-tekina seikatsu* succeeded…I want it to.

What if you have made multiple stores and decided to work on a story to publish it stories just to see how they do so that you can learn from them and out what you learned into your main story?

I have a story in mind but I can’t decide whether or not it should be a seinen or a shonen story
At the end of the day those are just demographics! While it can be useful to settle on one, these days the lines are getting blurred between what is or isn't in that demographic. Shonen stories like Chainsaw Man and The Promised Neverland HAVE A LOT of seinen elements for example!
Me: the theme of my story is not to overwork yourself
Also me: spending days on end drawing and writing manga without lots of breaks
My issue is when I come up with something it's already done or It's similar to another story, it's quite frustrating
Thank you for sharing your thoughts! There are ALWAYS going to be SIMILAR ideas, nothing is unique anymore. And nothing will be unique moving forward
Just look at the massive amount of new Isekai anime coming out every season
What matters is execution! You're different from everyone else so you'll succeed if you can tell your unoriginal idea a little bit differently than everyone else. That's what makes a story feel fresh and new!

Okay I just want to make a Manga called Huntress X Huntress where the main character gets a Huntress License like his father Ping Feekes. He is raised by his uncle on killer whale Island. He learns Nihn abilities while working his way down to the bottom of the inverted tower and duels other nihn users while making credits in the process. I don't want to spoil it much more but his father leaves behind a game call spleen Island. Later on after he finishes the game the Roach Arch begins when a bunch of roaches dift to his continent from the dim continent. Hopefully Pon can overcome his enemies and revenge Knites death. His best friend Billua comes from a family of hitmen.
You guys think I got something original and good enough to make it big.
I promise you all we will get to see the Dim Continent dimmit!

Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment! When it comes to writing fighting styles and magic, it's fine to take inspiration from other prexisting series like Demon Slayer! To make yours a little bit more unique try combining some elements from power systems from other anime/manga/movies! Maybe even through in an original idea here or there to really spice things up. The most important thing to keep in mind when writing power systems is balance. You don't want some characters to be stupidly overpowered while others can barely do anything. You also don't want it so your character is 100% op and going to win every single time. Creating tension and struggle and growth is a part of good storytelling so your system should have some sort of way to be improved through training, studying, etc. I plan to make an in depth video about this soon, but hopefully that could help for now! How should I try to publish a Japanese manga if I’m not from Japan
The short answer Is "don't." Personally, I don't believe it's worth striving for. Japan's manga scene is already EXTREMELY oversaturated and SUPER TALENTED artists FROM JAPAN are rejected all of the time.
It'd be SUPER HARD for a foreigner to be taken seriously. Once you get over the language barrier you will have to be good enough to somehow find an editor willing to review your work,
The pay in Japan is also super low compared to other areas and the workload is insane.
I believe if you're not from Japan then you should probably give up on that dream. It's not ENTIRELY IMPOSSIBLE, I have a video highlighting THREE ARTISTS NOT FROM JAPAN who found success, but the odds are SUPER LOW
It's hard enough to break into the market native to your area, so trying to break into an entirely different culture's market is crazy talk in my opinion.
If you wanted an actual answer. Medibang JUMP partners with Shonen Jump to host an Internation Contest every year. Silent Manga Audition is another international Japanese manga contest. You could even apply to the Tezuka Award

If you think a different idea is better then maybe it's worth exploring. You can always give another story a shot and come back to your old one if you realize you made a mistake! Hope that helps!

You have to be posting regularly all over the place to establish yourself. Sites like RUclips, Instagram, Twitter, Tik tok, Facebook, etc are all great to post your art and get people interested in you individually. Sadly these days people want to like the creator before even checking out their work. The only time I've seen the reverse happen is if the artist is super good and blows up online or goes viral Just creating a manga isn't enough to make a fanbase. That's one of the reasons I started this youtube channel A lot of my fanbase has discovered me through youtube. As a small creator I would focus on marketing yourself online and slowly building a loyal fanbase! Best of luck!

I don't agree with one of your points, but the other I do. I don't write manga cause I suck at drawing, and manga takes too long, so I'm writing a light novel. I also want my light novel to become an Anime. That's why I'm pushing so hard and want it to be perfect, but then I learn how to just be myself and write. I think everybody should strive for a goal, even if that goal is becoming an anime or being in shounen jump one day. Reality is harsh but still lets people dream. Oh yeah, the light novel I'm writing is called Grand Wish. Edit: Great tip is to don't plan your story from start to finish; plan critical moments and then just go from there. Fill in the blanks, and then once you get to that critical moment, another may have arisen while in the blanks. Oda does a very good job of this. He lets his characters fill in the blank. Luffy always picks the most dangerous path meaning the straw hats are always in a bad position. Oda uses this to create situations that end up leading to something else. So if you don't know what to draw or write, let your character do it. Think as your character would.
Yes that is a great tip! That is how my Editors and Publisher explained it to me too. You should have outlined important "story beats" that your story needs to hit like Intro, Arc 1, Arc 2, Arc 3, Climax, Arc 4, Ending
Instead of planning EVERYTHING like you said, you can fill in the blanks. Some people prefer to plan EVERYTHING though so they can foreshadow effectively, like in the case of Attack On Titan
As far as your first point goes, in my opinion, if you are writing a light novel, your goal should be to make the best selling light novel you can
Yes it is good to dream, but saying you want an anime is a far fetched dream that is unobtainable for most people, especially those outside of Japan
In my opinion it's a waste of time to worry about things you have no control over and focus on goals you CAN accomplish. Like I said in the video, if you want an anime, study animation.
Your goal should be related to the field you are pursuing. Instead of an anime you could be aiming to win awards for your light novel
