This man is very important to the evolution of reggae music. Not only is he important to dub but people seem to forget he mixed major hits from the late 70s onwards for Barrington Levi, Linval Thompson, Johnny Osbourne and many others. I have to admit that I still love the old Scientist dubs that were mixed at King Tubbys more than the nowadays modern dubs.
same here, genius himself doesn't understand that tape loss scratchy analog IS BETTER than digital and tape loss analog is more warm and cozy than digital, the genius himself forgot this, i love scientist
The knowledge this man has needs to be preserved....he could really give so many modern engineers a valuable insight into the industry, and how things should be done.
concerning the pyramids "all the modern engineers wonder how those primitive people moved such large stones with such precision" great analogy for the dub and reggae sonic engineering
Ever since GTA3, I have never had such a sound penetrate my heart as his music. On the Mummy's Curse when it say's "The difference between... I and you" it manifests my hopes and dreams with sonic force, yet, his words ring pragmatically true like any other master: do the work, be yourself, know your history.
His musical interview turned into a social analysis of the state of Jamaican society and he was at the eye of the storm from politics to Don's to the people Great interview
Respect. I have listened to his dubs from Zimbabwe(from mi eye deh ah mi knee kkkk is that how u say it in Jamaica?) Had never seen his face. This is refreshing. Hope players of instruments also get to be interviewed."Scientist rids the world of the curse of the vampires" is my favourite album.
I was about 14 when I got into Dub. I was amazed to discover what you could do with echo and reverb my father had a guitar amp and we as kids used to fool around with it. But guys like scientist made a instrument out of it.👌
@elon Green with all due respect. Nothing great about this interview. I understand he is the best in what he does, but the man is arrogant. Children came out of the woodwork …saying he is their daddy. If you never go there …they couldn’t call your name..rap it up. He spoke little about the music it self.. calling people monkey is not cool.
I’d sometimes leave the radio on in the car on and just park somewhere listening to the reggae station on the ps1 while I played world of Warcraft on my pc
Scientist!! Yuh ah fi di Heavyweight champion!! But mi muss seh.. the low fi soun' had a very special purpose inna reggae music. Dem low fi sound.. analog soun' had a special effect nuh sound can test.. jus mi opinion..love you mi breddah.. yuh change mi life with yuh dubs dem!! Jah bless yuh always!! Jah breezy
I was 9 year the first time I heard the works of King Tubby...3 years later I came across Scientist stamped sound scapes. Still today I enjoy the first moments aswell the philosphy behind it ❤ Bless and praises🙏
Scientist best Dubs are from 79 to 1983...Check out a track called Scientist the winner... On a dub album called 3 the Hard way... That track is definitely Cosmic and Sci fi.
OMG he’s such an Aries! He’s all “Don’t come at me with all that fake Rastafari stuff.” Digital might be great for recording but music is sold now, generally, with far fewer bits or bytes of music to playback, and hear, than vinyl. If everyday music was sold with the amount of information that vinyl has, that Tidal has, it would be different. Wow, he’s totally right about the early 80’s Junjo Lawes records. They have Scientist all over them. They sound exactly like all the best Scientist. Dub Landing Vol. 2 Scientist vs. Jammy is my favorite dub album. Interesting to hear his view on Jammy.
I am a engineer in jamaica and one of the young pillars doing mixing and doing dub versions in Kingston Jamaica 2024 when I started working with a x32 scientist face time me for the big up and some tips 🇯🇲📍
This man, Hopeton Brown, aka Scientist, was right there at the epicentre when it all started, he should be regarded as the true inventor of Dub Reggae since he was responsible for creating the techniques and drum sounds in what we now call modern Dub Reggae.
It was genuinely clear at the time that some of the albums that bore his name were nothing to do with him but the insight re Jammys is interesting. I assume Scientist mixed every track on the "vs" album then. Incredible.
But anyway who knew Scientist's fingerprint mixing would never be confused with Jammy's mixes. Scientist took dub to a whole new level that really no one could imitate.
Scientist had impeccable judgement as a mixer/engineer knowing when to mix a little and when to mix a lot and what aspect of the vocal to enhance via echo and what aspects to enhance with simple reverb is exquisite. I feel I am naive in wishing that the companies that made a lot of money out of his work despite the fact that he did not actually produce the music could have given him some credit both acedemically and financially and resolved the whole thing resolved in a "peaceful way" according to the ethos of the music that were produced during the time period. Nice to think about peace and unity, but it is a hard thing to put in place in the real world. Ironic that selling the humble music to big business that had no love or musical interest for what you were talking about in the music at the time (or since for that matter) have managed to put a wedge between certain people that were all working together in direct opposition to big business ethos should let this happen. And to put the music out on a "electronic game for the enjoyment of who" is still unknown to me.
A lot of the Scientist's LP that GS pushed out originally were released on the Jah Guidance label, so I agree with Scientist here about what makes and what doesn't make sense. It's a shame what GS and VP did. The Junior Byles story is heartbreaking. Respect to Overton!
Only 1 Mic to interview Scientist?? Surely you could have at least borrowed one from him, he must have extras! Ha ha, just messin. Thanks for doing the interview.
'Introducing to the world a big showdown, a dub selection, with on my right Scientist the Dub Chemist and on the left Prince Jammy the Dub Specialist, Round One!'
I'm a man of few words, I respect Scientist since 80s I started listening to Dub. Tubby & Scientist are the reggae rhythm pioneers.

Bless Up

Keep Going!
An absolute Musical genius, the sounds and productions that this man created when he was still a teenager are from another dimension. Thank you.
The knowledge this man has needs to be preserved....he could really give so many modern engineers a valuable insight into the industry, and how things should be done.
Genius up there with King Tubby, Scratch , King Jammy, Augustus Pablo etc these guys set the foundation nuff love to this man and respect 🦁😘👍❤️
One of the best mixers in the world from Kingston jamaica
We need those masterclasses online. We need this experience preserved forever
concerning the pyramids "all the modern engineers wonder how those primitive people moved such large stones with such precision"
great analogy for the dub and reggae sonic engineering
ive been listening to Scientist recordings for years and years. it is an absolute pleasure to hear the man speak.genius and master .
His music touch me from a early age , he have a magical flow in his mixes you can feel it.
Glad me watch this always wanted to know about the GREAT SCIENTIST. Wish I could meet him in person. Good interview.
His musical interview turned into a social analysis of the state of Jamaican society and he was at the eye of the storm
from politics to Don's to the people
Great interview
Scientist is a legend....involved in mixing many classic reggae hits from 1979-84...

SCIENTIST TRUE DUB MASTER !
Now I know why they call him “Scientist”. Very inspiring interview .
Met Scientist here in the UK and witnessed him mixing live the way he moved was unbelievable. Later got to reason with the legendary man.
I got to see him do the live mix for Lee Perry in Seattle in the ‘90’s. Just sat and stared in awe.
@@C.Hawkshaw OMG
That I would like to see
Lee " Scratch " Perry live and scientist mix it 😄👍🇰🇿🌶
This is gold!
Universal treasure. Everything this man says about music applies to everything in life.
Oh Scientist's so right about Junior Byles. A magnificent singer ripped off by the system, ending up in abject poverty. Heart wrenching story...!!!!
LEGEND ! saw him in Antwerp around 1990 , fabulous night !
This man is a treasure to humanity. I can’t wait to go to one of his shows. God willing.
My good friend Scientist. I’m one of the few that has had the opportunity to interview & do a radio show with called the reggae business talk show

But guys like scientist made a instrument out of it.👌
I do believe this man, can see sound colours.
When I heard him say that I thought to myself, "Scientist has synethesia!" Of course."
...a gift jimi had more than almost anyone :D !!!!
I like his perspectives on digital vs. analog or "vintage". Very insightful. He is a true professional.
This is a great interview. I love his work.
@elon Green with all due respect. Nothing great about this interview. I understand he is the best in what he does, but the man is arrogant. I was 9 year the first time I heard the works of King Tubby...3 years later I came across Scientist stamped sound scapes. Still today I enjoy the first moments aswell the philosphy behind it ❤ Bless and praises🙏
He said him and Tubby never taught no one how to do it.......that’s a powerful statement
Lloyd James may disagree....
