- The Samaritans are a tiny ethnic-religious community dating back almost 3,000 years - and they are a population in crisis. But perhaps not for long. Marriage agencies in Ukraine have arranged for more than a dozen women to marry into the Samaritan community in Palestine.
Many Samaritans live in a mountain village near Nablus in the occupied West Bank and face a worrying numbers problem. There are only 800 surviving Samaritans, where once they were counted in their thousands. Men outnumber women by three to one. Their custom is that a young Samaritan man can only marry a woman from within the community if he has a sister who he can offer as a bride in return.
Faced with a fight for survival, a Samaritan religious leader changed the rules to allow Samaritan men to marry women from abroad. While some traditional Samaritans initially resisted the arrival of several Ukrainian brides into this close-knit community, the women are adapting to their new surroundings and providing a population lifeline to this small community.

What a lovely documentary Thank you for sharing your country and the Samaritan life and struggles with us. You did it beautifully! 💕
Let's go find one 🤪
I really loved this documentary getting a look into another culture is something I really love to do, cannot wait to see more of her movies and documentaries!
Same gave a Natral intrest in othe people n Cultures
The young people should just be able to choose someone they like in their community, marry and raise a family. That will help ease the population crisis and there will be more brides and grooms to choose from in the future. These strict marriage rules often have unintended negative consequences.
Like mental and / or physical health problems from marrying a close relative. Should be a minimum of 3 or 4 steps away from a relative.
They do, but mostly look for Jewish ones (because blood related and also because linguistically, ethnically and culturally are the same, beside religious beliefs that are the same), if they can't find one then they look for an Ukrainian
There is no population crisis
Lovely documentary, I wish there were more Samaritan men in the World.Women deserve a husband who's sweet and kind, not the kind some of us end up with....
A woman is always able to divorce and go back out there to find someone who will value her and fulfil all her rights as a wife … but at the end of the day, good women are made for good men …

Yes men seem very sweet there.
Would you have allowed to be married at a younger age to a man/boy without holding demonstrating and calling it evil?
It has been a very good documentary! Congratulations from my heart! Also, i want to express my admiration for the samaritan people. How nice they are, so spontaneous even with an innocent look and how they are integrated somewhat into arab culture. May God protects them, their marriages too.
Imagine a Samaritan woman wanting to marry a foreign man. I wonder how that would go?.. Probably not as well.
Probably not. What if a Palestinian or Jewish man wanted to convert and marry? Would they accept?
@@2degucitas yes, they'll look first for a Jewish partner (don't need to convert since the culture, tradition and beliefs are the same except for the Mount Gerizim thing), for a Palestinian one the partner needs to abandon their family and everything and embrace the Samaritan faith, culture, etc... Thus being said, the Palestinian can't see again their relatives nor let their kids visit their relatives in order to preserve the identity as Hebrews (or Israelites) with no foreign intervention... But most Samaritans don't want and dont like that idea since they suffered a lot becsuse of them and they see them as invaders of their land
@@DD-rv8hi they suffered by Samaritan hands?
@@2degucitas Palestinian not Samaritan, they made a lot of massacres and forced conversion process in order to eradicate them
@@DD-rv8hi thanks but your answer isn't clear. Do Samaritan women marry Jewish men? But Samaritan women won't marry Arab Palestinian men because the Arabs took their land and the Muslim Arab won't convert and his family won't speak to him? What if a Samaritan married a Jewish or Muslim woman?
The Bible tells the story of the Good Samaritan where a traveler who was stripped of clothing, and left half dead . First a Jewish priest, then a Levite comes by, but both avoid the man. But a Samaritan took pity, bandaged his wounds, put him on his donkey, took him to an inn, gave the innkeeper money to care for him. He even said he would reimburse the innkeeper for any extra expenses. Lu 10:25-37

Stupid comment by her. Her community is facing a crisis of incest, if she was serious about the future and happiness of the Samaritans she wouldn't say things which will make a woman think twice about marrying into the Samaritan community. Stupid spiteful woman.

when men treasure women, they work harder. the samaritan homes all look very lavish. obviously the men know they have to bring their A game if they are to find a wife. that part really impressed me.
in some parts of the world where the men feel like they are doing women a favor by marrying them, you can see how shoddy their lives are coz women still throw themselves at men regardless. even if they are lazy or drug addicts, or players/adulterous..
the last couple in the film are very beautiful together i hope they have a lovely life too

Samaritans
Ethnicity
Description
Samaritans or Samaritan people are members of an ethnoreligious group originating from the Israelites of historical Israel and Judah. They are native to the Levant and adhere to Samaritanism, an Abrahamic, monotheistic and ethnic religion in the Holy Land.
Samaritans are mentioned in the Bible and we saw them mentioned as sharing the same lineage of Abraham as the the other Judaic groups..they appeared to be looked down on...but good people.
Yes, that's true.👍
This is still partially arranged. It isn’t left up to chance to “fall in love.”
Yes, they can... Mostly they look for Jewish brides (for obvious reasons), if they can't find one then they look for s foreigner
Wow. I can't imagine how they withstand uncertainties and uphold their unique culture. I've only read Samaritans from the Bible.
*Imagine watching this video as a single 🙂.*

What a delightful documentary.
I am shocked - but in a good way like the lady Vera Petrak says at 41:37
Why can’t they marry fellow Palestinians or whoever they like from their community,,,,
Why such secret living ,,, I feel sad for them,,,
Because they are keeping their ancient traditions and their israelite/jewish bloodline.
@@footballfan5462 by marrying the girls outside their lineage, from Eastern Europe, who are not even Israelites ?
In first place Muslim women are not allowed to marry outside of their religion, so very few Muslim Palestinian women will ever be able to marry with a Samaritan man. And if a Samaritan woman marries a Muslim man she will be forced to convert to Islam and will further cause the minority Samaritan community to decline. If more and more Ukrainian women decide to marry with Samaritan men it is a win win for both communities.
They don't for many reasons including resentment against them, also they look for Jewish brides in first place (for obvious reasons), if not then they prefer an Ukrainian bride instead a Palestinian one, no matter if she converts to them
Fellow palestenian?
To few young women ? This is already terminal decline for such a special community. We will miss the Samaritans in the coming decades.
If arabs and jews were to provide women, they would survive (with provide I mean set up speed datings). Although, arabs are way too tribal to give away their women.
As a religious community they are not going to disappear but their gene pool will be diminished because of these marriages.
Their numbers are still small, but growing.
This is very beautiful documentary. Thank you so much
God bless them all in the life they choose
So beautiful documentary 😍

Alcohol problems, economic uncertainties etc among the Ukrainian men. More women than men anyway, so women are forced to look elsewhere
What is the significance of the fruit hanging from the ceiling ?
Interesting documentary. Why don't the men find brides from the middle East, Arabic, Kurdish, Turkish etc communities?
And what of the young Samaritan women, are they allowed to marry put? How do they feel?
The Jews have succeeded as a people because over the centuries you can see they did marry outside the community. Also, Jewishness is passed on through the mother. Maybe the Samaritan need to give their women more freedom too if they wish to grow as a community.
Women from those countries don't want to convert and move to another country. Honestly there are some Muslim men in the Arab world that do the same with Russian and Ukrainian women.
Because of islam. Although, because of secularism, it should be possible in the future.
@@yurichtube1162 Probably not for a while, even for most secular irreligious people they want at least a token conversion.

The proverbial Good Samaritans must be preserved! I remember their special relationship with Jesus

There is no any connection between the marriage of woman on condition of solving marriage problame of her brother.
If the male is wanted he can choose between some women, can his father order him to merry only the woman that she have brother for exchange marriage? Of course not. If his sister will not find groom in the community she can not look for groom outside, may be they will merry her as a second wife like in the Bible or in arabs community. This is crime if doable standard.
They don't practice polygamy. The social laws in the Bible suferred an *evolution* over the centuries & by the time of Jesus, the population was mainly monogamous.
Samaritans have very nice houses.

Why are there 3 times more men than women or whatever they said? Surely all humans have about 50/50 male and female? If they are short of people have more babies! Mos women can have 10 children ate least if you marry young enough. My great grandmother had 11. I have about 40 great aunts and uncles as every one had about 10 in those days.
Yeah, that is really strange. Usually, nature regulates itself to about 50/50 distribution, like you said... 🤔 I sense some convenience abortions going on, tbh.
I don't think they are short of people, just girls. And perhaps it's because women didn't want to have as many children anymore (in this modern age), so perhaps they 'took care' of some of the pregnancies - at times favoring boys over girls..
This is just speculation, ofc.
That's a lot of children!

Loved this documentary! I think Ukrainian women & their culture can adapt more easily into the Samaritan culture because the cultural norms & values of both societies are more closely aligned. Many American men have not achieved the same success because many don’t understand the Ukrainian culture. I have a financially successful cousin who twice went to the Ukraine and has not achieve success in marriage. I believe it is because the women whom he chose expected to have a more family values than he could provide simply because he didn’t understand what was important to those women. Thus both marriages didn’t survive. Both marriages ended in divorce and the women returned home to the Ukraine. I felt sorry for my cousin as I know he is a good man of character. Obviously he has insecurities about himself because I didn’t understand how he couldn’t find an American woman . I found that sad for him. I hope that the couples and families highlighted in this documentary are still enjoying the fruit of their marriages! I have always loved the story related in the Bible of The Good Samaritan. And that resonated in listening to the elder Samaritan grandfather sitting with his granddaughter doing lessons together! If it is proper for this 🇺🇸 grandmother I wish you “Shalom”!

@dyawr the fact that the Ukrainian women view living in the west bank aa better tells you what you need to know about Ukraine. That being said, the Samaritans have a very unique and somewhat enviable position in that they get preferential treatment from both sides of the conflict.
If I were to marry someone from the holy land, it would be a Samaritan. Seems like an OK set up, if you can tolerate the religious conversion. And I don't love how it seems a lot of the women weren't told how extreme some of the beliefs are, like them having to live in a separate room once a month while menstruating and that type of thing. If they don't mind it that's one thing, but it's hard to fully be truly consenting to something if you didn't actually get really told was the reality.

Good if that happens, their community seems to need it. 🙂 What I'm curious is what led to this shortage of women - usually nature balances itself out & there's about an even number of boys vs girls. 🤔 And they seem to be living well on average, comfortable lives.
*I really need to know what is the name of this matrimonial agency. Bro seriously how are they doing this?*
🤭 You can imagine this is just a presentable, general insight into their lives... personal affairs & marriage are usually more complicated than this. And we're not seeing the whole-whole story, just a few min from 3-4 couples.
What I can tell you is that, from what I know, there is a real culture in Ukraine of marrying young & the girls/women there, see it as a natural progression (early) in life. - like going to school, graduating & then getting a job and marrying. 🤷♀️
So, it's not uncommon in the Slavic world in general, (particularly North-Eastern Slavs I think - like Ukraine, Belarus, Russia, Moldova), to see many women marrying at 20-21-22-23 - around that age. Sometimes even 19.
