I am not a pilot, but my friend of old Eric is. Back in the late 90's and early 2000's we would rent Cessna 172's from Wright Flyers in San Antonio, TX and fly cross country and sometimes get dinner. The airplane rental (wet) was $48 an hour, and we'd split it. He would allow me to fly during these excursions (although he'd take off and land). It was a total blast 😉👍!

That sounds like a great time! $48.... those were the days!

In 1971, it cost $40 for a flying lesson in a Cessna 150, with a instructor included in the price!!! I soloed after nine hours of instructions. The one thing I loved the most was, no traffic! I never did get my private piots license, but gave my boyfriend a flying lesson for Christmas!!!!! He married me, lol we are 69 now. I would say flying was one of the best thing I ever did.

Thank you for another fun, as well as informative, video, Max. An additional benefit of doing the wrap-up the next day is when giving the cost summation, it fits Cindy's "I don't want to know" every time you mention the costs during the flight. That is, until she views the video! (I mention that because I remember the video where she made the statement she watches all your videos.) Please keep the great videos coming...

There's plenty of restaurants in Nor Cal where you can easily pay 200 per person. A plane trip like yours would definitely feel worth it.

I bought my first airplane in the mid 70's. I'd keep track of everything and figure out how much per hour it cost. I quickly gave that up. You can't justify flying that way. You either want to do it, or you don't. I bought a 79 Archer in 85 (which I still have). We used to fly to several places in Wisconsin, from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, for dinner on Friday nights. I flew into Oshkosh several times. Then flew out here to Arizona when we moved. Was it worth it? You bet!

There you go! It's not just the practicality you're paying for but the experience itself! I bet that Archer looks similar to the one in this video?

Great video Max, thanks for making it! I imagine it would be fun to do this kind of thing as a full day trip as well and might not be that much more expensive if you were to get a standard rental car instead?

It’s actually cheaper for us to fly to our mountain house in the Blue Ridge mountains than drive there. Granted you can’t take a whole lot of luggage in the Cherokee. Flight time there is about an hour and a half. It’s about 13-14 gal of 100LL. If we take the Yukon it is a six hour drive and about a tank and a half of 89 octane.

That's such a great example! And geez... a 6 hour drive is so much more tiring than a beautiful 90 minute flight.

Nicely done. Did you have to key up to turn runway lights on or already lit on arrival? Probably already on since its a busy airport?

Good question! Van Nuys does have pilot controlled lighting, but that's after the control tower is closed for the day. Although this was at night, it was still early enough that the tower was open so the lights are already on.
