Old video but will comment in case someone else is facing the same issue. I faced the same "issue" after cleaning and rebuilding my vmax fuel pump. However there is nothing wrong here. There is no suction because there is backpressure in the outlet fuel line. With the outlet hose detached you can feel the suction. Start your bike and you will notice it sucking fuel just fine.
Hi, working on my own fj1200 (recently acquired, never ridden). Why don't you hook up the temp gas can (like you had) and disconnect the fuel pump outlet hose and direct it to a glass jar or something. Then turn the key and see if it pumps fuel into the glass jar? If it does I'd think you are golden. My own fuel pump after sitting unused 15 years died on me. I really wish I'd have thought ahead to prime it myself (with some penetrating oil) - sitting dry that long I think it was stuck and then burned out. I got a replacement chinese pump off ebay for like $25, but I hate going that route and will later replace it with a used pump off ebay (for about $30). Search the web and you will find another more recent yamaha bike that uses the same pump series - search ebay on that model and you will pay half of what an "fj1200" pump will cost but get a newer pump (1997-2003 I believe). Good luck with it.
Wondering if you had this fixed? I have the same problem. But what I found out is that when I connect a regular hose from outlet of the pump to an external tank and jump the pump itself, it pumps continuesly. But when I connect outlet back to the bike hose, pump dies. Feels like too much pressure builds up in the fuel system and the pump dies, until I relieve pressure by disconnecting the outlet.

Oh, sorry, I thought this was an FJ model. Should still be cheap to acquire a replacement.
