    Hey, this gold sheen sapphire looks alot like a cross between labradorite and 🐅 tigers eye. The facet cut stones are okay but because of all the streaks in the stone, the cabachons are just gorgeous and seem to almost glow, I need a gold sheen sapphire in my life.😝

    Interesting story you have submitted Mr. Charles Lawson. The gentleman that first recognized that this form of corundum could be so effectively presented is a credit to his good self and to his time invested in both the semi-precious gemstone aspect, as well as the more valuable fine cut faceted traditional jewel quality gemstones. (Diamonds, Beryllium, et al, along with very rare forms of specific hardness facet-cuttable jewel stones.
    Did you know that Australia's first entry into the international sapphire jewelry market had their quality demeaned because they were harder to facet than the traditional sapphires being marketed in those times past.
    An interesting hypothesis that the 'moh hardness scale' could accept Australia's sapphires being superior in hardness to figure 9 that he had designated to corundum per his hardness scale.

    Reminiscent of smudgy bronze asterism, available from North Carolina to China. More readily available than transparent corundum, although I would suppose one location has it's own specific idiosyncrasies.

    • @Lawsongems
      @Lawsongems  7 лет назад +1

      Yeah, it is the inclusions that make this variety unique and so far it is just the one mining area in Kenya that has been able to produce this hematite/ilmenite rich variety in any significant quantity, at least to the point where the GIA has classed it as a new type of sapphire :)

    If they didn't say that this was gold sheen sapphire I'd bet the farm that it was labradorite. Honestly as an admirer of gems and not educated in them I would never buy gold sheen sapphire it looks too similar to labradorite and would be afraid I would be easily fooled into buying labradorite pieces at gold sheen sapphire prices by dishonest merchants. So I would avoid it all together. In fact I'm so skeptical I'd be more willing to believe that this some large scale conspiracy by the gemology world to get precious gem dollars for semi precious gems.

    • @Lawsongems
      @Lawsongems  5 лет назад +3

      Haha nothing wrong with being skeptical. In this case, seeing as institutions like the Gemological Association of America, the Gemmological Association of Great Britain, the French Gemological Association and more have all confirmed this as a new variety of sapphire I think we can rest easy ;)

    • @Lawsongems
      @Lawsongems  4 года назад +2

    Have there been any other colours found? The ones displayed all seem to have a blueish background, but as sapphires come in all colours I was wondering if more had been found. Specifically as ruby(or "pink" sapphire) is closely related I'm wondering if red or pink has been found? ofc I do realise that just because they're basically the same mineral, doesn't mean that the formation of the gold sheen asterism is also gonna be conducive to the formation of pink/red stones as well, not to mention that ruby is the rarest corundum colour. That would be stunning en cabochon I think tho, if they were to be found.

    • @Lawsongems
      @Lawsongems  7 лет назад +1

      +catz Keet There is a bit of blue and yellow material found but when these colours are obvious there is usually a lack of the sheen effect. That said you may have noticed in one of the shots there was a yellow that had been cut with half clear yellow and half gold sheen, so though there is a little bit of material with other colours it is usually cut to show a multicoloured stone.

    • @Lawsongems
      @Lawsongems  6 лет назад

      It is a bit reminiscent of rutilated quartz. This has a hardness of 9 (as it is a variety of sapphire) :)

  • @nak8490
    @nak8490 6 лет назад +1

    I've never seen anything like it. I've heard that some Star Sapphires can be black with inclusions of Hematite. This must be what I've read in a book called, "The complete illustrated guide to minerals, rocks, and fossils". It was written by John Farndon and Steve Parker.

    • @Lawsongems
      @Lawsongems  6 лет назад

      It is a very unique variety of sapphire, black star sapphire is predominantly included with hematite and rutile, what makes this variety different, in short, is that the colour and star is caused by a combination of ilmenite, hematite and magnetite, at least enough to the point that bodies such as the GIA and the Gemmological Association of Great Britain have classed it as a new variety haha :P

      That is exactly correct. We pay for jewellery, clothes, cars, houses, music/art and every other item or process in our lives that involve any amount of style, fashion or popularity at a price higher than their actual value simply because our society attaches value to them. How do you rate the chocolate sapphire against these gold sheen sapphire?

    • @Lawsongems
      @Lawsongems  6 лет назад

      The main difference would be that generally the term "chocolate sapphire" is simply used to describe a brown sapphire, where gold sheen is referring to a specific variety of sapphire. So potentially if you had a particularly brown, gold sheen sapphire, you could call it a "chocolate gold sheen sapphire" :)

    Some type of rutile??

    • @Lawsongems
      @Lawsongems  7 лет назад +4

      It is actually high amounts of hematite and ilmenite that are the cause of the effect (rutile and magnetite may also be present in small amounts) and it is due to this unique combination of minerals instead of the usual suspect, rutile, that it has been classed as a new variety.

      The majority of the material is quite opaque or translucent at best (some have transparent sections) because of this most are cut as either cabochon or rose cut. This both shows off the optical effect the best and gives the best face up to weight ratio, if they are faceted there would be a lot of weight sitting underneath in the pavilion of the stone that does not add to the apparent beauty of the stone. However some are occasionally faceted in a full cut but this is a bit more of a novelty in most cases.
