Skepta became the biggest grime artist in the UK predecessing stormzy. JME is his younger brother and also produced alot of the hits for Boy Better Know which is the collective they were a part of. He's a true OG in the game and well respected. He was offered an MBE in the UK which is given by the Queen but, he turned it down and got his cheiftancy in Nigeria 🇳🇬 instead.
One of his latest is a feature on K-Trap ft Skepta - Warm remix and definitely deserves a reaction and an introduction to K-Trap.

GRIME is like Hip Hop's cousin, comes from the soundsystem culture that came to England from the Carribean with the 'Windrush Generation' and had its own evolutionary journey, through Jungle/DnB and House & Garage music and mixed with British culture. That's why Grime MCs tend to rhyme in different pockets of the beat than Hip Hop artists, still has some of that Carribean cadence, like Jamaican Dancehall toasting.
A GRIME SET, eg Ghetts ft Chip - Can't Run Out of Bars, consists of a DJ mixing through all kinds of electronic instrumentals, usually at 140 beats per minute but NOT exclusively, while GRIME MCs take turns spitting their lyrics one after the other. As one MC spits the other listens out for the changing 'riddim' (instrumental) and decides on which one of his lyrics will match. If an MC follows with a perfect lyric, perfect flow or catches the beat perfectly it's like sticking a landing in gymnastics, that's the ONLY time in GRIME where the music is stopped. The DJ 'wheels' back the vinyl just like in Reggae Dancehall and starts again. Another good example of GRIME culture is 'Stormzy Rinse Set'...
house inspired most of the edm music tbf, grime came after jungle and garage n they came from breakbeat . Mcs like Wiley started on pirate radio which was big in back in the day, they would spit to jungle/dnb on illegal radio stations in the London area.
Also yeah grime uses a lot of electronic sounds, 140bpm and heavy sub, which was born from a mix of old school dubstep(140bpm/sub heavy, same kick/snare pattern as grime) with elements of uk garage/jungle/dancehall/dub which were all big dance music genres in the 90s and still are today
Also, the reason there’s a particular type of low-bit style of sonics on grime is that it was developed by people who previously knew next to nothing about production getting free or cheap software like Fruity Loops on their home computers and just making beats. So that 8-bit/16-bit early games console kinda sound was a big part of the early grime scene just because of the nature of the software they had access to. And the beats had a modern punk feel to it because of the DiY aspect, because like punk, the artist were not virtuoso musicians or experienced writers, using traditional structures or playing by any rule book, but they had the raw spirit, aggressive lyrics and vocals too… when you consider this, grime in a way is another offshoot of punk.

Grime basically is the evolution of garage, which was an evolution of jungle. These genre's were created with a DJ mixing tracks n MCs on mics in clubs n on pirate radio stations. Very underground in the beginning slowly n rarely breaking into the mainstream. Very much like bashment n dancehall from yard 👊 As for the electronic sound that came about because very, very early grime tunes were literally made on an old PlayStation, music creater games.

The electronic style backing in grime is derived from UK Garage music. UKG was a really popular underground genre
Grime comes from Jungle, which was a dance music movement in the UK in the late 90s/early 00s. It's really dark and aggressive. Dubstep comes from the same genre so you can see the relationship 👍

House and Garage were like cousins back in the 90's, they were different in many ways though. Grime was an evolution of Garage it was basically grimey Garage. To really understand the evolution of grime you need to jump in to some garage. Mark Ryder, So Solid are a couple to start with imo, there are a lot of artists i can list but i think those 2 will give you enough context to get you started. Other Genres that had a lot of influence were DnB and Jungle (DnB being an evolution of Jungle) which came from the Jamaican Soundsystem culture

So about the electronic sound of Grime beats, Grime evolved out of the UK Garage sound in the early 00's
Dubstep is also an offshoot of UK Garage that started bubbling up around the same time so there's a lot of sonic commonality between grime instrumentals and the early UK Dubstep sound. Grime and Dubstep are musical brothers, both are 140bpm and it's not uncommon to see Grime MCs spitting over Dubstep beats

the electronic sound comes from it's roots in Drum n Bass, many genres influenced grime and DnB is just one of them, thats bpm is so high at 140. and Skepta is herald as one of the goats of the 2000's/2010's, stormzy would be a very different rapper without Skepta.

One of the main influences in all UK rapping comes from the sound system culture from the carrabian as said down below. Drum n Bass and Garage MCing, I've even heard mcs spitting over techno at raves.
