  • Kansas City is the largest city in Missouri, and is home to one of the most infamous airports in the country. Opening back in the 1950s, the MCI airport featured 3 terminals with an interesting thin c shape, built with the premis of only being a few steps from the entrance to your gate. While that design worked fine back then, the airport can be a nightmare post 9/11 security, with all of the shops, restaurants, and other conveniences being on the wrong side of security. To solve this problem, city officials are building a brand new terminal from scratch that will fix the awkward layout of the existing airport. This is Kansas City’s New $1.5 Billion Airport!

    Hey guys, just a small correction. At the beginning of the video, I said that MCI opened in the 50s, but I meant to say that the old downtown airport opened in the 50s and MCI opened in 69-70. Sorry for the confusion.

      Also, the downtown airport was opened at least in the 1930s, maybe before. A terminal was dedicated by Charles Lindbergh in the 1930s.

    Thank you for covering my hometown's new airport. Many Kansas Citians did not like the new terminal idea because it would take away the drop off and walk straight to your gate but after many years (and threats from Kansas on opening a new single terminal) the city finally moved forward with the project. The drop off, walk up to gate was great or locals but the current airport was cramp and gloomy. It lacked amenities and was not a great first impression to the rest of the world. Keep up the great work! Love these airport and architecture videos.

    I live in the KC area, but have traveled to many cities. The best part of MCI is that you can get dropped off and picked up with ease. It is important that you eat before you go or land because there isn't a great selection of eating places at MCI. No, it isn't a good looking airport, but functional.
    I'm glad that they are building a new airport. KC is a nice place to live, but we don't have the star power like other cities because of most of the small minded people that live here. I'm glad that we will be able to share our city with new people once the new terminals open.

    Supposedly, TWA also considered a landside-airside design, similar to Tampa International, which opened at about the same time. They scoffed at the costs, though. Sometimes I wonder what KCI would be like today if they'd gone with a Tampa-like design. Tampa's one of my favorite airports, and the airside terminals would make for easy connections.
    Even without taking security into account, it's hard to believe they thought the ring terminals would be able to accommodate a 747's worth of passengers disembarking and checking in. I guess modeling passenger capacity for a given space is a newer science than I thought it was.

    The Drive to Your Gate terminal concept was popular in the early 1970's. This type of terminal was used at DFW Airport in 1974. Shortly after opening in 1972, this terminal was rendered obsolete when security checkpoints were mandated at all US airports. Curve-Linear terminals are great for locals but lousy for connecting hubs. TWA found this out the hard way after millions were spent. These terminals were built with saving money in mind. Early on TWA specified they did not want people movers and that mechanical conveyance systems (like elevators or escalators) be kept to minimum. TWA should have asked for a Centralized terminal with piers or a Finger-Dock design like that of the old ATL, MIA or ORD. It would have worked out a lot better.

      Good points!

    • @markb3806
      @markb3806 3 года назад +1

      The biggest issue with Kansas City's curvilinear design is that the terminals were not built with sufficient depth. At DFW, the terminals were built deep enough to accommodate adequate space on both side of security (which facilitated the use of DFW as a hub) but KC's airport doesn't have that luxury. Beyond security, KCI is very narrow with little room for any facilities (shops, restaurants and restrooms) and the movement from gate to gate is hampered by lack of space. All that translates into a very uncomfortable gate situation for passengers. If you are travelling alone and arrive late to the airport, it can be convenient. For everyone else; people who arrive earlier, families, business travelers from out of town or if your flight gets delayed, it can be a pretty miserable experience.

    Interesting video. A couple of comments. I do not think the major cause of the Continental plane running off the runway was the airport being too small. I lived in KC at the time and remember the cause was the 707 hydroplaned during a heavy rain and the brakes did not hold. The too small part may be because there was not enough runoff room at the end of the runway. Interesting that one thing that came from that accident was that Kansas City and other airports began to cut grooves in the runway to move the water. Now it's a normal thing. Secondly the "C" design was a great idea when the airport was conceived. That was before the hub system and security. Some of us remember when you could nearly always get non-stop service to many, many major cities. Then suddenly after airline deregulation the hub system came into fashion. KC was once the hub for Braniff. It's no fun to fly now knowing that nearly every flight will mean a connection through Dallas, Denver, Chicago, Phoenix, Atlanta, etc. Oh for the days of non-stop service.

    I like the new airport design for MCI. The last time that I went there, the terminals were dark, cramped, and you couldn't really get much more than a candy bar and a bottle of water in terms of food or drink. Worse, the terminals had no connection with each other, so if you arrived at one terminal, and had your departure at another terminal, you were almost entirely out of luck. I hope that if they do similar replacements for the other terminals, that they at least include underground walkways between terminals, or maybe a people mover.

    • @mciramp688
      @mciramp688 Год назад

      @@taxiway207 There is even to this day occassional interline travel booked as one ticket between Delta (B) and United (C), American (C) and Alaska (C). That involves going from terminal C to B or vice versa if you're on Delta for one of the legs. Southwest, Allegiant, Spirit and Frontier do not have interline agreements so one would stay with that airline unless they bought 2 seperate tickets, which could happen I suppose. There is a Red Bus that shuttles people between terminals. It is faster to walk outside between the two terminals most times (4 minutes outside) vs 10 minutes claimed frequency of the Red Bus which is optimistic. Not great if the weather is bad, not to mention unnecessary pollution created by having to use a bus to go from one terminal to another. The new KCI will fix a great many inefficiencies.

      So? I travel all over the USA and world and 20 minutes is average. I have actually waited in some of the longest most annoying lines at MCI because when they have more than one flight departing from a gate area at once, things bog down real fast there. In other airports, they just open more TSA lanes if things get busy. MCI you can't do that and you end up with long lines. The ONLY positive thing about KCI is if you arrive from a flight, and you have no bags checked, you are at the curbs in literally a minute. But that's hardly worth all the other inconveniences as I can do that any just about any other airport in less than five minutes and most of the time I check bags anyway. So what are they going to do with terminal B in C disappointed to hear there’s only 39 gates with a maximum of 50 that’s less than what the three terminal design offered unlikely we will get an airline to call Kansas City at home with those few of Gates plus I didn’t hear anything about more international flights with larger jets arriving the design is pretty but I think it fall short of what Kansas City needed

    • @jonesrmj
      @jonesrmj  2 года назад +1

      I think the old terminals are all getting demolished. Remember though, Kansas City isn’t a hub anymore so there isn’t a need for a lot of gates.

      @mciramp688 Год назад

      The gates at the current KCI aren't much bigger than a shoebox. If you have a 737 departing out of an end gate like 31, 60, 61, there are passengers on the flight who cant even queue in the gate because there isn't enough room. These new gates will have much more room. I think KC residents will come to love the new design.

      Kansas City needs to just concentrate on getting back some of the Southwest traffic they lost to St Louis and Denver by dragging their feet so long on this airport. KCI could have been a major airport if it were rebuilt back in the 90's or early 2000's, but everybody was so worried about having to walk a little further so the airport lost a lot of relevancy over the past 20 years. Airlines stopped wanting to make KCI a focus city. Frequent flyers avoid the airport like the plague. KCI lost a lot of flights to other cities and now most flights from KCI go to a handful of hubs. So people walked less at KCI, but have to use two airports to get to many places. Makes no sense. I don't live in KC anymore and hated KCI when I lived there. I really hate it now as a non local. This project is decades overdue.

      I doubt KCI will become a hub in the traditional sense, especially as the three mainline carriers have consolidated their hubs over the last 10-20 years. There is a good chance we could become more of a focus city for Southwest, however. Terminal 2 (the former East Terminal) at STL is essentially at maximum capacity, although they have repurposed some of the former D gates for use. Southwest is already KCI's biggest carrier, but the existing terminals don't make layovers easy. A brand-new terminal with room for expansion could entice Southwest to move some of their flights from STL, or at least slow their expansion there while adding more flights here.

      @@jonesrmj Actually, several airlines attempted to make KCI a hub after TWA left. Braniff and Eastern are two airlines that did plus a couple of smaller airlines. Unfortunately, both Eastern and Braniff were in financial trouble when they opened their KCI hub and both airlines eventually went bankrupt. KCI's 3 terminal configuration makes it an inefficient and unlikely hub and I suspect lack of competition by a dominant airline was the biggest draw to KC as a hub. That situation has changed with the emergence of SW at KCI making it less likely to attract even a startup as a hub but a better more efficient KCI could be attractive to a bigger operation for SW.

    As a regular visitor to Kansas City, I have often commented that KC is the worst airport I have ever travelled to. The terminals are like giant cement caves with no amenities. Congrats to the leaders of KC for for having the vision to build a new airport that will be an amazing welcome for visitors to KC, the hidden gem of the midwest. I remember the first time I visited KC was in January, several years ago. I got their late in the evening and had to stand out on the center curb with a frigid wind and snow hoping that rental car bus would come. There was no place to eat in the airport. It was a terrible welcome to KC. Let's hope they get rid of the "stand on the center curb" to wait for a rental car bus. I have also had to stand in the rain waiting on that center curb. The new airport terminal design looks amazing and I expect the locals to be proud. My only complaint will be that the airport is so far to the north outside the city. Sadly, my relatives and my business always takes me to the Southeast of KC, so the drive is really long.

      I get what you are saying about the distance from MCI to the SE side of KC, but the airport is in the city limits of Kansas City, and the Northland is leading Kansas City's growth.

      While some credit is due to our city leaders, the ultimate credit goes to the voters of KC who approved the project after several earlier vote-downs. It will be awesome and the walk from the new mega-garage isn't as bad as you think!
