1.5 hours of modeling compressed down to 15 minutes showing the basic workflow that I used to construct a Sketchup model of a 12 story urban tower. More at www.alexhogrefe.com
Alex, good to see how you work in Sketchup, thanks for the post. I started following your blog while in school and now work for a Landscape Architecture firm and I've learned a ton of applicable things from you. I recently learned of a ruby script which might help you. It's called Makefaces.rb, which will allow you to make surfaces from your cad line work without having to draw duplicate lines on top or across existing lines.
There's a couple of things that that you did that could have been easier with 1001 bit tools if you've heard of it. Otherwise, this is so awesome! your workflow is so fast and neat.
When things get complex, in the case of double curves, etc, then I will move to Rhino (Even though there are some great plugins for SU that I have been experimenting with). I like the simplicity and graphic style of the sketchup interface. It feels more natural to me to use.
I was able to find basic massing online. From there, I quickly added detail to just the nearby buildings by looking at Google Maps street view. I only added detail to the buildings that I know will be seen in my rendering views.
Yep I did mean paste in place, that is a pretty valuable tool I didn't know about till this video, it just went so fast I couldn't read it properly. Ha hope that doesn't disappoint you
First, you copy an object a certain distance. After you copy it, type "x" and then the number of copies such as "x10". This will copy the object 10 times the same distance as the initial copy.
I found basic massing online (literally just boxes). Using that as a base, I used street view on Google maps to get a better understanding of the details, heights, etc. I spent about a day modeling detail into the nearby neighboring buildings so that I wouldn't have to Photoshop everything which would have been next to impossible.
Uh it's more of both actually.. What tool you use will determine what will be the easiest to make a section of a project AND how you use it to your advantage. gg.
What I expected you too answer, and what I think is one of the main modelling forces in Sketchup, is the feedback. Rhino and most other programs I've tried, isn't feedbacken pretty good, and can sometimes be a chain around your leg, in sketching fases. Hopefully RhinoV5 is a bit better. I wondered if you are aware of any great climatic analysis tools for Sketchup? If i shall do a urban context analysis, I would imidiately take it into Rhino+GH. Any SU suggestions? THX in advance!
Hi Alex, thanks for your videos, It's a great help. You said in your article (blog/2013/1/13/urban-night-illustration.html) that you have a "weak processing power of [your] computer", but I can see at the end of the video that it's running pretty well even with so many details. How do you achieve to work so fluently with so many details? Cheers from France.
OK, and what did you do around the 2:00 minute mark. It looked like you did some sort of rapid copy and paste that I have never seen before. Also, what is the benefit of changing the axis orientation of a component or group?
really nice work and video but how did you get a so accurate plan to make your model ?beacause if i import a .jpg the picture is very fuzzy and i dont know another way. Thanks
you can also use divide ("/10") to evenly distribute object *between* two copies. copy the original to the last position, and add as many as you like in between.
Hi Alex, could you upload a normal speed video next time you are modelling a building? It would help me greatly to pick up little things like grouping and the overall work progress. Thanks!
Hi Alex, greetings from Singapore! I've always loved your rendering tutorials. for this project, did you add in the materials and colours for the render on photoshop or did you add them on sketch up first, and then export to photoshop? which method do you think is faster (or produces better result), or do you have any suggestion? Normally I have to do quick render everytime, as rendering is something that i would do last before my submission. :)
Hi Alex. Thanks for the post, always nice to see your work, and especially your workflow. I wondered why you did this modelling in Sketchup, it just seems like your are dealing with a lot of "sketchup-workflow" longtaken the process, especially when working with the curves and "non-diagonal" lines/direction compared to XYZ world. Wouldn't it have been faster modelling in Rhinoceros? Or is there another reason why you're sticking to sketchup?
Great job! That was exciting to watch. I love your work. I never knew that about evenly distributing by copying and pressing x10 and what not. That will help me in the future big time! I'll have to watch more again soon! What took longer to do? The high rise or its surroundings?
Hey man, awesome Job! im working on sketchup too and i render on Artlantis with the Maxwell render engine. i wanted to know if you uploaded this model on the 3d warehouse so i can dowload it to render it. thank you ;)
April Regret I think when he was first seperating them he moved them by an easy to remember number. So for example he moved them 50 meters to right, and then 50 meters left to bring it back to its place.
You realised in 1,5 hours what I do in three weeks. Congrats bro.

very nice alex i like it a lot

the changing axis makes it easier to snap to ortho and make planes, but he may do it for more reasons than that that i dont know
beautiful

OMG, I just realized it's not about what tool you use, it's about how you use it... GJGJ

Just a flat surface. I later added mullions to give the curtain walls a little more substance.
In grad school, I used autodesk ecotect, but that wasn't really a plugin. I not familiar with any good climate analysis plugins for sketchup.
i would love to see the final render!

You can reduce the speed of the video directly on RUclips.
Is it possible to post video tutorials of rhino modeling aswel, if you also use it?
Thank You for your help so far!
What is this "place in place"? Do you mean paste in place? If place in place, I would like to know what that is!

rhino is the one i honestly prefer, nothing agaisnt sketchup, rhino just works better for me
How did you place objects with equal distance between them so quickly 11,34?
Great as always, Alex. Your SketchUp skills are impressive. Keep it up. :)
My ultrabook would freeze with a su file that big!
IES VE is a climate analisis tool for sketchup
you got to import your plan from autocad.

you can also use / instead of x to divide evenly between the copy and the original, good for quick dividing.
excellent work, did you add a thickness to the glass used in the curtain wall or is merely just a flat surface?
Oh my
What's the name of the plugin on the right? it look useful :D
And I can't even make a god dang window...
This works out great with Drun'n'Bass playing in the background :D
My computer can't even load this model. BTW, awesome work, dude!
Make faces 1.4 plugin.
beautiful...great to watch as well...gotta spend more time learning sketch up!
How could you change the UCS of the components?
Wow
How did you import vectorlines into Sketchup?
bro you're a great work..fantastic salute bro..Tq
At 4:12 "place in place" Blew my mind
Tthanks Alex, Happy New Year!
me gusta
waw amzing Ilove you!
Ingenuity much?
how do you transfer the floor plan elements to the whole building in the exact position?
April Regret I think when he was first seperating them he moved them by an easy to remember number. So for example he moved them 50 meters to right, and then 50 meters left to bring it back to its place.
woow i like this
great job man!
How do you record?
lol.
What program is this?
Read da title. It uses Sketchup.
