    My husbands grandmother's name is Jewel. Which all her grand kids called her Granny. Our kids had 4 sets of grandparents so it was a bit confusing until our son dubbed her "Granny Jew!" (None of our relations are Jewish)! It stuck and all the kids started calling her Granny Jew! Yesterday was her 96th bday!

    My husband had a Grandpa J. The letter J was his government first name. A grandchild’s unfortunate pronunciations as a toddler can plague a grandparent for generations. My father-in-law narrowly missed being known as CrapPa for the rest of his days because my daughter said “Crap” instead of “Grand” for the first 3-4 years. Luckily, he’s safely Grandpa now but it was touch and go for a minute.

    I’d like to add the elusive “Mrs. Lastname” or just a plain first name for grandmas who haven’t yet coped with the fact that they’re old enough to be a grandmother. I’ve got one of those 😂 there’s a lot of fake flower arrangements, gold picture frames and mirrors around the house and always an open bottle of wine in the kitchen.

    Another category not discussed here is grandkids’ interpretation of grandparent names offered to them: In my family Ruthie>Wootie and Grandaddy>Vandaddy. When my sister became a grandmother, she took her first name which begins with an M and became Emmy. Either the name was an instant hit or she bribed the grands until it was a reflex reaction to use it. Our poor mom, when she became a grandparent, encouraged the kids to call her granny (though she should’ve tried for grandmother, she was so coastal), but they overrode her, incomprehensibly insisting on D. which, sadly, was not one of her initials).

  • @hayhay321321
    @hayhay321321 Год назад +7

    My coastal grandmother tried to get even fancier and chose Grandmere as her grandparent name. It's French for grandmother (Grand-Mère) and when properly pronounced sounds very fancy. But when butchered by southern talkin' grandbabies, it came out closer to "Grameer" and she just had to roll with it 😂😂

    We called my father's father "Grandfather" and he was indeed coastal--born and raised in Savannah. My father's mother did not want to be called Grandma, so since her name was Mamie, we called her GrandMamie. We called my dad "Big D" for Big Daddy. I noticed there was no mention of Big Daddy in this video, but I knew several kids whose grandfathers were Big Daddy.
    Keep up the great work, Landon. I've been showing your videos to everyone!

    Hi Landon - I am a recent ‘Grammy’ comin’ up on my grandson’s first birthday in June and I’m waiting with bated breath as to what he’s going to actually call me. Wisely, his first cognitive name-object association word is Zel-da. The family dog. The child is obviously precocious not desiring at this point to pit or pick one parent over the other. Being raised a KS midwesterner but living in VA the past 30+ years I somehow was blissfully unaware of the intense pressure in the run-up to his blessed birth by the in-laws, who were already nana & papa and the intense scrutiny and pressure regarding my choice of grandma name. I chose Grammy, but my son refers to me as Grandma when visiting with darling grandson so I’ll just be happy to answer to whatever name this darling boy decides to call me!
    Can’t wait to see more of your videos!! Please talk on Aunties…. Not always really related, but definitely a qualifying close wish-was family friend…

    My mom was born in Decatur, IL and says lots of these "southern" things, but my Daddy does not. I don't know how I named my mom's mom "Nonnie". There are no Italian ancestors, so I don't know where that came from! She liked flowers, a neatly decorated home, cussed once in a while, and said lovingly "Oh Bless its heart!". My mom (who is also Nonnie) called my Nonnie's mom "Nong"; I think my uncle came up with that. I can't wait to show these videos to my mom which is easier now on RUclips! Thank you!

    I am new to your videos and I like that they explore the linguistics of southern culture. You present very well and you have a new subscriber.
    I am from South Carolina and am "Cammie". My husband is "Powpow" which our son-in-law started as a joke but it stuck! We also have grandparent nicknames stemming from our grandparent name such a Camma-lamma and Powders. Some of my friends call me Cammie as well. You really nail these cultural nuances and

    Not from the South, but all my grandparents (grandma and grandpa on my dad’s side and grandma on my mom’s) were Grandma/Grandpa LastName.
    This meant my mom’s mom had possibly the BEST grandma name - Grandma Wise.

  • @MsWDWFAN1
    @MsWDWFAN1 Год назад +1

    The first grandson called my grandmother Bobo and grandfather Ladlo. Have no idea how he came up with those names but they stuck so all us grandkids called them that. I had awesome grandparents. Especially my grandmother! We lived in the same town until I was 11 so I got to see her quite often. Mama would wash and set her hair every Saturday for church the next day. I couldn't wait to go and she what treats she made. There was always something yummy on the counter! Even if it was just candy!
    I called my stepdad Poppa because I hate the word STEP as he raised me from 10 years old. He went through the hellish teen years. The grandchildren called him Paw Paw and they called my Mother Nanny. I called my Mother Mama.
    There are all kinds of other variations to naming grandparents. They might not make sense to some people but to that grandbaby it's everything and that's all that matters! 😂 Yes, I was born in the South! 🥰

    Hi Landon, I’m a new listener but I feel sure one day I’ll be among the “long time listeners”. You’re doing a good job with the schoolin’. I’m from North TX, and yes I know I am not exactly Southern as Texans belong to Tejas and not the South or Southwest. However my mothers people are from the panhandle and since I relate to 65% or more of your content I hope I pass muster with high enough accreditation to comment… its pretty good lil story… my maternal grandfather was AO. This came from the initials of his first and middle (second) name, Alberta Oscar. His wife, my grandmother, was Pansy. (I’m qualifying like a 4A football team!!)
    Unfortunately, my parents did not understand the importance of getting the grandparent names squared away… I blame my older sister for being so darn cute and distracting. Well, four years later here I come. Couple of years after that I start talking (talking a lot, we have that in common. Also, you are a great storyteller. People think hand written cursive letter writin’ is a lost art… 🙄) Any way, slightly before I start talking I’m confused already. My parents just throw around grandpa like its appropriate to have two very different men share the same moniker. Same for the ladies, good gravy! Well, I cannot have this confusion. I need to know who is going fishin’ out to Yellowstone and who is going out fishin’ to Toledo Bend ( toll’lee’da bend if course is what you’d hear me say). Well, AO, he smoked a pipe- cherry tobacco. I’m not sure he liked it so much as it was pleasing to my mother, and was just sweet smelling enough so that Pansy let him smoke on the porch- not making him walk out to the back fence. Pansy scared the living daylights out of me, we were not allowed to touch anything in her house. I had to wear curlers in my naturally curly hair the night before we drove up to see her- Mom needed me to look fancy like I wasn’t going to break anything. When they came to visit, (usually on their way to somewhere so they could only stay a night), they stayed in their fifth wheel on the street of my small suburban neighborhood, parked in front of our house. I don’t think she wanted to come in- needed her own turf at all times, you know? In her defense, she would allow me to watch her paint her eyebrows on, and that was plenty enough bonding for me. Well, I started out thinking that she was kind of being bossy mean with all her rules and such. I found myself preoccupied with the fact that my grandfather was not ALLOWED to rest in his chair and enjoy his pipe… and so don’t you know I christened AO, Grandpa Smoke a Pipe. There was Grandpa that fished for crappie and bass. He and my Grandma (that later became Gran once I had grown up), lived 5 minutes away from us. They got talked about the most since they were secondary emergency contacts after my parents. Also, there was Grandpa Smoke a Pipe. He was the grandparent that taught my how to make a toy car out if a wooden spool, matchstick, rubber band, and small piece if soap. He fished at Yellowstone. I loved them all very much.

    GREAT video Landon. Completely agree on 100%. But specifically strongly agree on two key points: 1) You MUST acquiesce to In-Laws who got their grandchildren before you did. There can’t be two Grannies at Christmas functions…too confusing and almost considered offensive…And 2) Names hang on for generations. I had a Nanny and called my momma Grammy…those names were off the table when my 1st grandson was born … as were Gramps (Pure Ky) and PaPa. I’m now Nana and so proud ❤ Love your channel. I had a Grandma and Grandpa, and a Granny and Papa. Granny and Papa were much more casual and had a small farm. The grandchildren of one of my uncles goes by Daddy Papa because the grandparent name chosen for him was Papa, like his father was, but his daughters couldn’t stop calling him Daddy and it confused the kids. So they smooshed it together and made “Daddy Papa.” I also had a great aunt named Eloise who had always gone by Sister because her younger siblings couldn’t pronounce “Eloise,” and she was known as Sister by everyone, throughout the whole town. Everyone assumed she was a nun because they heard everyone else call her “Sister.” And it was said with so deep a Southern accent that I was probably 10 years old before I realized we were saying “Sister” and not “Sista.” I thought her name was Sista.

    Hey Landon! I enjoy your talks so much, especially that, even on TikTok, they contribute so much more nuance than can be found elsewhere, explaining little elements of Southern culture.
    I agree with so much of this, and it makes me smile to think of observations I've absolutely made over the years... my Grandmother (God rest her soul) would absolutely take to her room, if not her bed, though GRAN never would lay on that bed in the daytime unless just shy of hospital ill (the sofa would do if absolutely necessary to rest her eyes).
    I am proud to be the first grandchild on one side and named Gran. Most presciently. She is a gem.
    Does anyone else know folks that call every grandparent basically the same grandparent name + the first or last name (last usually for a great grandfather I've observed)....ex. Mamaw Alice, Pa Roberts? Some of my cousins do that...even to the grandparents we share who already have their grandparent names. Now, it's their parents' fault...

    I’m a California transplant in TX (2015😭) I love the south and wish I was born here instead. Most sweet people and my in laws are the epitome of Southern hospitality. They probably say bless her heart but it’s okay 😂 I adore them and the Southern region.
    On my Southern family’s side, there is a Paw, Mamaw and a popaw with a Zuzu ❤
    I love your videos😂

    First of all, let me tell you that I love your content and I'm so happy you've brought it to RUclips!
    My mom wanted to be Nana, but my son had a Granny so he kept saying Nanny, and so it was. I am a Nana. I don't know how you would describe Nana/Nanny, but as for my mama and myself, we are like mamaw in that we know how to do the "country things" like fishing, working with our hands, fixing things and raising chickens, but younger than Mamaws and can switch gears into more genteel settings when we have to. We are considered the "fun" grandmas.
    I'm in Texas, and a significant portion of the grandfathers here are called Pawpaw, though in my family someone once spelled it "PaPa" and it stuck. Once, at our small town elementary school, they had a Grandparents' Day lunch. As we all headed in to the school through the parking lot, I said "look at all those Pawpaws!", causing a lot of the guys to laugh and nod. My husband is a bonus grandpa, so the kids call him "Poppa Dave". Poppa Dave is for sure the one that's gonna play with the kids and sneak them extra treats ("don't tell Nana").
    My grandchildren have a Grammy, a Grandmother, and a Gigi on the other sides, respectively, and are exactly as you described. They have a Pawpaw, a Poppa Big Beard, a Granddad, and for the one whose grandparents are in England, Nan and Granddad.
    Have a blessed day, looking forward to more long form content.

    Hi Landon! So happy you are here on YT! My grandmother name came from my grandson. He was very little, around 12-15 months. He was trying to say "gramma," but at first it came out as "mamba." That turned into "Bamba" and I ran with it by encouraging it and having everyone else refer to me as "Bamba" when he was around. So I am "Bamba." And now he is 10 and thinks there is a song about me! (It's the Ritchie Valens song from a long time ago). Love watching your videos!
