That's the tragedy of Cooling - she knows that the salt content of the ocean's water (her overwhelming feelings) will kill the pineapple tree; that her love for this person will eventually suffocate and kill him and though it breaks her, she has to cool down and walk away. Definitely one of the greatest recorded live performances, in terms of sheer emotive power. Who doesn't get at least a little lost in those high soaring notes towards the end of Cooling? Who *isn't* instantly able to connect to that horrible sensation when someone else has fallen out of love with you while your heart is still very much raw about it all... I think I've seen her play this live 4 times now, and it's always remarkable and haunting. Love you even with all your vowel abuse, Ms Amos!
This is the song I listened to over and over again when my grandmother was dying of lung cancer and after her passing. She was diagnosed in October and passed on January 3rd. It makes me ball.
