    Great, unique breakdown man! Agreed 100%, though of course nothing is so black and white, but I believe you ultimately painted the foundation of the philosophy and it was spot on. My only real disagreement with you is Ms. Marvel (Kamala). She deserved to be in the top of this generation, even though she is essentially a derivative, but so is Miles. I would argue that Miles is much more of a derivative of Spidey than Kamala is of Carol, because Kamala's core of her character is still way more unique. Quite honestly, I think every character out of this latest generation is clearly a derivative of another character.
    It's also good to point out that this doesn't mean that those derivatives (or B list characters) can't still be valuable books and gain value long term, but we have to keep things in perspective and understand that their potential will never be on the same level as the main A listers. I mean, look at how successful Guardians was. These characters are loved by MCU fans, but Starlord's first appearance was losing value during the COVID spike.
    I also think the "derivatives" become even more volatile the newer the age. IE. Dane's first appearance will still be a better investment than a derivative character from the 90s, simply because it's a silver age first appearance in a legacy title.
    Again, great job man!

    Great idea for a video but remember it sometimes depends on DOM (Deep of Market) ….meaning that you have to really consider the amount of these books on the census. When you look for example at Black Knight as an investment Avengers 47 and 48 these books are relatively scarce(around 2000 apiece on the census) with only a handful of 9.8’s total. But if you look at Black Knight 1 in 1955(Atlas Comics) that book is an absolute GHOST with only 105 on the census (First Black Knight/Ebony Blade) with the highest grade being 8.5. I say this only because we need to consider 1.) Supply of these specific comics (census) 2.) Demand (How big will a character blow up) 3.) Long term sustainability of a character (Spiderman as ultimate example) ….all that to say I think Black Knight is the absolute BEST SPEC in the entirety of comics. A blossoming movie star like Kit Harington signed to a 6 film deal with MCU with a character like the Black Knight(who became the head of the Avengers after Tony Stark died in the comics) ….your point in the video is well taken and it is all about the long term staying power….I think Black knight is a safe bet

      Also has 2 do with success of movie. Check and prev before MCU. So spec is which story and which origin cinematic universe gonna make Cannon?? Case in point. Any thing with Bruce Campbell in it. Lol. Joker origin Killing joke. And Batman on the chair. Also case in point Secret wars. 2015 story not old one. Just some key events. I e Galactus doom and some spec. Just saying. Dc playing catch-up and making cartoons. Which no hate. But we lost Heath. Not my top but loved it. My top is Jack, and Luke. Phoenix did amazing. Just not a fan of the outfit. Also 2 prove a point. Moon Night??? The Fk is that guy?? But the show was amazing!! I will catch someone slippin. Bet. Also key spec Fam. Doomsday clock. Alternate universes Dr. Manhattan vs Superman!!! They gonna make something. Bk that story is kick ass.
      P.s Is the Prof X in the MCU in the animated series chair make that comic a key first app. Or does that mean that the prev Xmen movies with Stewart in now MCU and Whitman paradoxical??? 🧐🧐🤯🤯🤯🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🙋‍♂️🙋‍♂️🙋‍♂️🙋‍♂️.

    I like the comparison of mcu and WWE as far as the generational cycle. One argument I would make against the point of this whole "Whitman Paradox" theory, is that Iron Man was more of a 2nd tier character until the movie in 2008. Original and non derivitive maybe, but not the character kids wanted to be for Halloween in the 60s....50 years later, yes. Thats why, I believe with the right movie any of these "derivative" characters, like Nova, could be huge.

  • @wlewey
    @wlewey 2 года назад

    I think this is a pretty solid start. I think there are other factors that can affect a character, especially when we get to actors playing them in the MCU. You also have to take into account the points when people surge into comics. The boom from the past two years is going to create a lot of new fans, and I assume some of them will have characters from the later generations that they enjoy.

    I offer an alternate Whitman paradox to you. I have been collecting comics since the early 1980s. When we were collecting in the 80s and 90s Whitman re-prints were not considered collectible. And then in the early 2000s people realizing the scarcity of Whitman re-prints started purchasing them and some of them became more valuable than the original books.

  • @purecomiccollector
    @purecomiccollector 2 года назад

    Professor Swag is on point!! First rule of the market place- who is your buyer? Applies to anything and you described it beautifully with the Whitman Paradox! The book will spike and then dump because there aren't enough buyers in the market to support the new inflated price. I noticed you get a little more worked up than normal using the whiteboard but I like it!! 😂 Another great video Swag!!

  • @supermankelly
    @supermankelly 2 года назад +1

    I'm not sure what the paradox is but I've always said, collecting anything but blue chip charcaters for long term investment is a waste of money. The only people who benefit from lower tier characters is flippers taking advantage of a FOMO that shouldn't exist except within the flipping circle. This is the paradox. The circle keeps flipping until the FOMO dies off and some poor long term collector ends up with a comic that no longer has demand or value they paid.

    To be fair, Harley Quinn, one of DC’s most popular characters of all time was introduced into comics in 1993.
    Not to mention Chamber, Sync, et al, being introduced in 1994. Massive characters with huge followings.
    Basically, I think the 90s sorta breaks your formula because the output of new characters was SO massive and there was SO much energy around the medium of comics:
    Hell, Spawn? I mean, yeah.

    Great job on the Whitman Paradox, which is now gonna be a thing. A couple of things to add.
    1) You’re not a real Black Knight fan like 2 of us out here unless you know who Exodus is. Hint Black Knight is Exodus is Black Knight.
    2) I feel like you didn’t touch Darkhawk b/c you were afraid he might be derivative lol. I feel ya
    3) Only a select few such as Stan and Jack and some hardcore fans knew that Iron Man was top tier, until one day Joss Whedon and RDJ came along and showed us that truth. And Marvel’s been trying to copy that formula and failing with lower tier character after lower tier character. Morbius is probably the latest example of that. Sorry Ms Marvel and She-Hulk might be the same there.
    4) There are some special creators out there who can recognize the potential of 2nd or 3rd tier and raise them up higher if they do it right.
    Thanks, Enjoyed the video!

  • @rocksteadycollectibles8379

    Great video! Thanks for putting that together. I couldn’t agree more with everything. It all boils down to supply and demand. How many people are buying, and how does the amount available fulfill that demand. Anyone who is a die-hard Black Night fan, likely already had the book. If they were priced out before the news, they are still likely priced out. So who’s buying?
    I feel the same thing happened with Carnage but a bit different. There are a ton of Carnage fans but the book still out-populated the demand.
    You gotta look at who’s going to be buying, and what their intentions are. Carnage fans already had their copy and when the movie came out there were few buyers left but a ton of books on the market.
    If you’re buying to flip, you better have a plan on who you’re selling to, and if they even exist!

    I will ask u. When does collecting become a problem. When u go broke? Or have so much of collectibles others are uncomfortable. I collect Baseball cards, comics, movies, and toys. And I only collect the ones that I like now. But most are in boxes and kept safe and not displayed. My point is my money is tied into my collection. But my collection makes me happy. When the world sucks and I am broke. Bk worst case I can hawk 3 or 4 books and get what I need. Or continue to collect on a budget be responsible and go 2 work. Or win the lottery and become a RUclips guy. Or??? “Lightning has just struck my brain.” (Smee). Sell my entire collection and roll the dice??? Quit my job and start a channel??? Also comics are Spawn, Batman, (mainly Joker). Harley Quinn. And Ones that I find interesting. I e Doomsday Clock!!! 🤯🤯🤯.

    Also I am a hustler. Fam. So price is relative 2 need and want. Real Talk. I got a spiddy 300 news. Raw. Price guide low say 350. Situation am I coming 2 you. Or u coming 2 me. If I need the bread then I take what I can get. But problem is that book makes me happy. Along with others. That said price is relative 2 the person with money…. 🧐🧐

    If a character has been out for 60 yrs and never caught traction or sold tons of comics they probably won't now. That's a logical assumption based on data.

    I think this now boils down to buy, collect, and speculate what you like. The odds are in your favor that when it’s time to sell, you’ll find a buyer. A lot of rehashed characters are floating around out there pretending to be “blue chip keys”. Great job planting the seeds to encourage critical thinking to the community. Keep it up. We need guys like yourself.

    16:41 “No, No,No!” (Captain James Hook) in Hook. Smh. What happened is the unknown element of your theory. Creations of a character happen all the time. Now if they pop or flop is a q of relevance 2 the viewer. Real talk u can’t please everyone especially now. Bk people get all butthurt. And get emotional. Hence the fall of the attitude era. Hater gonna hate. Example I thought Bane sucked. But when he live action broke the bat. I was like check. On board. That stated Bane with Ivy. I love Uma. But he sucked. So like young avengers. And Jane Thor??? Might as well be talking x-23 in a test tube.

    The character breakdown by eras is great, but I don't see an equation here that leads from your premise to the conclusion. It's really more like three unlike concepts huddled under a leaky umbrella. And, don't get me wrong - I like the video and I like the content you create, but this particular video coins a term that doesn't represent the content.
    I think most of us were hoping to see something about the Whitman Variants (which actually does represent a paradox when compared with modern reprints and variants).
    On a basic level this example you give is neither a paradox nor germane to only Dane Whitman, and the anagram seems a bit shoe-horned, but the strongest tenet (that the people who supposedly want these books are likely the very same people that already have them) is important for collectors to realize.

      The reason I go through the acronym is for entertainment purposes. Overall, the idea is that character popularity comes in cycles and that you have to consider which characters are the most popular in order to understand what books are going to be able to maintain their floor values. With this understanding, you can then see how the Black Knight book will likely not have as strong support floor in the future. This becomes a paradox because everyone assumes the book will go up in value yet everyone is also planning on flipping the book.
