I hate after hours work socializing; if I'm not getting paid for it, I'm calling in sick (or some other excuse). You spend the majority of your day on work: getting ready for work, driving to work, working, driving home from work, etc. A full- time employee spends around 10-14hrs a day on work and work related things; we don't want to give up anymore of our time without pay.

Just left a job like this At first, everyone was acting like my best friend, but the moment I tried to change my schedule from night to days so I could have time with my REAL family, oh boy, there true colors came out quick. What was hilarious was that they were so used to treating people a certain way and getting away with it that they were completely shocked when I walked out on them without any type of notice.
We're like a family that's one of the biggest lies that they have ever told in corporate world and they expect you to be at those meetings off hours these jobs try to take up all your personal time you won't have time for your real family
I have noticed that in corporate environment the best and the brightest are not promoted to supervisory positions but rather less intelligent people that are more geared towards pushing the interests of the company over the interests of the other employees.😮
When I spoke with two employees at the end of an interview, we were really getting along and it was very positive, and then over the intercom the receptionist barked “you’re five minutes over” and both of them literally jumped out of their chairs and acted like they were going to get fired for speaking with me too long. Then I met the owner who did nothing but praise himself and had “possible narcissist” flashing behind his every word, and he didn’t let me tour the facility like all other interviews I’d been on, possibly out of paranoia. They offered me the job but didn’t meet my asking wage, instead countering with one below my wage at the job I would be leaving, and refused to negotiate or offer any incentives despite the expectation I would move for the job to a much higher COL area. When I told her that wage was below any standard I had seen before for the position, HR told me, “well, since our competitor went out of business, we lowered the wages.” Just too many red flags, but at least they didn’t mention family. She was offended and argued with me about being ungrateful when I declined their offer. 💀
My old job got a new manager that called a meeting saying everyone needed to attend but didn't account for some our time frames but she did a shortened meeting for those of us who "lacked incentive" and said we'll all be like a family now I stood up and said I have a terrible relationship with my family and quit right there
I joined an engineering consultancy that treated employees like family in the sense that we celebrated birthdays, knew the bosses’ families, visited their relative’s wineries etc. we were well treated at work too. As salaried professionals we weren’t on a clock but extra time was usually able to be taken off later after a major milestone was met through long hours. The bosses also sent us home at times - “go home to your families, I don’t want to see you until Monday”. They also supported me when my 5 yo was gravely ill and when I wanted to move cities. The employees had great loyalty because we were offered amazing opportunities to learn and grow in company time. They never fired people, even when that was the financial thing to do.

You have to love that the words: “We’re like a family” have become completely linked to every toxic environment you’ve ever had. It’s so sad because it’s so true.
I once had a boss tell me that like we are like family I told him two Christmas's ago I punched my cousin in the face are you sure you want to be Family
I work for a family, and the family members hate it. They resent being forced into working a job they hate, doing things for people they hate, all because they're "family." One son has $40,000 in crypto and wants to go into business for himself, the other wants to be a barber, but Dad says he started this business for them, and needs them to cook and clean in a restaurant. They do it. Why? Family. FUCK family.
If they're adults there's no excuse. Go do what you love. Dad or Mom will get over it. Remember, that business was their dream and they followed it. You need to do the same.
Something I've tried to conclude and consider when it comes to dreams: Children are their own person once they become an adult. Let them be free to find their own unique selves. The flipside to that is, if you do not follow your dream, you'll either fulfill someone elses' but the kicker is if you don't, there's a chance your children will instead. Live your dreams, without (en)forcing others into yours, so there's no regrets. When you feel hole, easier said than done, then you have a lot of love to give your children to follow their own unique path. In this case, the parents of the restaurant may possibly be trying to set up an early retirement for themselves, by trying to get the children to take over when adults. Nothing wrong with that, if the kids enjoy what they do. Sounds like the parents are getting backlash, because this wasn't in their plans. They were probably hoping they could chill, and have the kids take over. I read a story about a couple who created a garden business and the kids went to college and came back to help the business grow, but that was because the children decided to come back. They wanted to, the kids were not requested to stay from the get-go. The kids helped when they were younger, they dabbled in college, found out they saw potential in the garden company and tried to build it up from where their parents left off. They probably went to college and decided to come back to work at a place that's the least stressful, compared to college. It's all dependent on the kind of work/jobs kids are exposed to and if that type of job fits their values, work/life balance, etc.
“We are like a family…” yeah a toxic one that expects you to work for almost nothing and plays favorites and takes advantage of the hardest workers. Literally every company that says that is full of it. It’s not a supportive family they are talking about but the gaslighting and potentially abusive kind. I have had that in real life and at jobs. No thank you. As an adult we have to develop the discernment to look out for this. Be smart and value yourself as you find a career that values you genuinely. 🤘🏼🙏🏼💚
I actually had a family environment at work. But we had all been working together for a minimum of 6 years on the same team. Some had been there 10-12 years. Then people started getting promoted and things changed. No longer feels the same, but I guess it’s more normal
The supervisor, manager and director where I'm employed work very hard at maintaining the most hostile and toxic workplace possible. They are such narcissistic losers! They make me sick!
Literally anytime they want to do team building exercises or bowling night or shit off the clock as long as it isn’t mandatory cool but I’m out if that’s a thing a company is gonna push on you. It means some disconnected corporate asshole has the say in everything cause normal working people who make actual good bosses don’t push that shit
Also, stay away from family run businesses. They always bring in relatives who have no idea what they're doing who happen to be your new manager or replacement.
I know veronica has it all figured out, but she should've asked all these questions in the interview BEFORE the salary negotiations and agreement to the offer. Veronica really needs to start her own knitting business.

You reminded me of this and I almost forgot how ridiculous this was. Like why are we talking about metrics and numbers when you forced us to go watch managers run around in a t shirt which nobody wanted to do.
@@LonghornsLegend I had a managerial job in healthcare, worked from home with a bunch of women. Any time we went into the office for trainings or meetings (about 3-4x/yr), in lower NYC, they wanted to "go out for a drink after work." Every time. I never went because it wasn't work- related and I don't want any friends or "family" at work (plus they were blood suckers). So, I was labeled the "non-team player." I just couldn't join a bunch of gay drunks who were never excited unless they were going drinking or had a knife in someone's back. I suffered from PTSD after I left.
After work, I don't go ANYWHERE without my kids.
The US air force has come to that
I hate after hours work socializing; if I'm not getting paid for it, I'm calling in sick (or some other excuse). You spend the majority of your day on work: getting ready for work, driving to work, working, driving home from work, etc. A full- time employee spends around 10-14hrs a day on work and work related things; we don't want to give up anymore of our time without pay.
Being treated like family, OKAY, What percentage of the business will I get? OH, 0%, OKAY THEN.
My boss told me we're a family during my write up, so i reached out to her the next day to further discuss issues she mentioned during my write up that weren't officially documented. She told me it was highly inappropriate for me to be texting her via slack, which was my only way of contact with her besides in person, and that she was at her nephew's birthday party. What a great family.

I agree. I dont want to play games, participate in contests, or swe coworkers after work.

The thing is, some of those "team building" activities can rapidly end up very expensive. And it's not as though they pay enough for you to be able to afford them - and they certainly don't pay for you.
@@the_question if they're giving you free pizza during work time, that really doesn't sound bad. Just ask other people about their weekend plans, become known as a great listener while really you're avoiding talking yourself 😁

I actually told my boss that at my last job: "I already have a wife and kids and friends too; I don't need to replace them with you people".
I was there for another 2 years; and then I started my own business ...
Has it been easier translating these values into the Businesses.yoinset up ?
“Nights out with the team…”
I was expecting Veronica to ask if that counts as time & a half 😂
Hahaha!
Family and answering the question "What makes this a good employer?" with "it's fun" are major red flags.
Compensation, benefits, advancement, development, and opportunities are the right answers.
We're like a family is code for we use and abuse and expect to get away with it based on seniority' like an older brother who picks on the younger one and moms like oh number 1 son can do no wrong' you must have misunderstood what he said to you.
Wow you perfectly described my previous job 😂
I recently started working at a chain restaurant in addition to my other job for extra money. I’m addition to the constant group chat messages and unnecessary loads of “online training” that I am expected to do at home, every week we are expected to post about a “positive guest experience” and if we don’t, we will not be scheduled. It’s 100% just a corporate stunt to brag about how caring their staff are, but in my eyes all it is is an excuse to have us constantly tethered to work even when we’re not there.

Get everything you can in writing, if your state is a single party consent state record them telling you to work at home. Then get a lawyer, it sounds like you could sue for hostile work environment, and retaliation.
Ehhh I'd rather just work and not have the "family" aspect. I show more respect and bend over backwards for my family. I work to live. I DON'T LIVE TO WORK. 💁♀️😁

Just left a job like this
At first, everyone was acting like my best friend, but the moment I tried to change my schedule from night to days so I could have time with my REAL family, oh boy, there true colors came out quick.
Great response, as soon as the word Family is mentioned my brain disconnects along with my spirit.
404 ERROR; COMPASSION FOR ✨️UNETHICAL✨️ CORPORATE AFFAIRS NOT FOUND... ✌️✨️
I have noticed that in corporate environment the best and the brightest are not promoted to supervisory positions but rather less intelligent people that are more geared towards pushing the interests of the company over the interests of the other employees.😮
Companies usually don’t want anyone moving up who has empathy & great morals cuz … well that’s not how highly successful people operate. So backwards!
When I told her that wage was below any standard I had seen before for the position, HR told me, “well, since our competitor went out of business, we lowered the wages.”
Just too many red flags, but at least they didn’t mention family.
"We're like a family" is corporate for "there's drama, fighting, lies, manipulation, and backstabbing."
When a job says where like family that’s a big red flag 🚩 Amazon would say this all the time and it’s a terrible job
There’s that word again “team” I’m working at a job, not playing soccer or baseball.

The word team isn't limited to sports, you know that right?
@@RoninSkye24
No. But in a job. I’m working for myself. To make me and my employer money. In that order! A team means I suffer because someone else is lazy. Unless the paycheck is made out to “Team” I’m my own person!
@@dodgeguyz you're just saying a bunch of nonsense that has nothing to do with the word "team" and thus has zero relevance. Team is any group that works in a coordinated effort towards a similar goal. So, it could be a couple people or an entire company of people.

LOL, you sound like a “Team” leader? In which case you think your ideas are the best! Fortunately I know better.

Did you mean to say, we are not family and we are not friends?
Wow!!! That’s amazing!!! My family never does nights out, prizes, or gives me any money!

Yep. I resigned yesterday from a place that they sold to me just like that. Most toxic place I’ve ever worked. Hiding behind platitudes that no one upheld.
Its weird how it's corporate work places feel the need to set up team building! I worked in many kitchens where being a team is part of doing your job. Annnnnnd we went for beers without being prompted by management!
Yeah that's the one thing I have to agree with Veronica on . As soon as your employer starts using words like family . Run don't walk that job will be a nightmare .
"We're like a family" is a deal breaker. So is "family owned and operated" and "treat you like family".
She's definitely not coming back 😂
“We’re like a family!” Is code for “We want access to you 24/7!”
I'm glad that I don't work somewhere where people try to say we're a family. We're a TEAM, and most of us work as team players. We get along well, help each other in emergencies, and ask if we need anything if you're not busy and your other coworkers are. I appreciate that. I'm not looking for new besties at work but I enjoy the banter and conversations!
V's walking out at the end was just PERFECT
yup a friend of mine walk out the moment her interviewer said the F word, when the boss called her the next day called the next day and she explained why the boss hung up and called back in a hr and said the person is on 'leave' can she start work, my friend now does the interviews
Hanging out after work was a no for her.😂
I’m stuck in a “family” like this. We’re getting pedicures for the summer. Can I just get paid properly? I don’t even have toes.
LMAO. Should've done this at my last job.
Yep, the only right way to answer that
RUN! Once you hear we're like family.
Plus your Boss / employer / Supervisor wants be your Brother cause we “Family” but when it comes to overtime, they don’t want pay. So I say with the greatest respect, unfortunately you’re not my brother or family and you need to pay my overtime. Otherwise I will leave at the time that my shift ends. ❤
Where definitely not family if we can’t be ourselves.
It was the "sometimes we do bonuses" for me.
😂😂😂
They need to stop enabling his ego. The sooner the better. One day the guilt-tripping will escalate.
If they're adults there's no excuse. Go do what you love. Dad or Mom will get over it. Remember, that business was their dream and they followed it. You need to do the same.
Something I've tried to conclude and consider when it comes to dreams:
Children are their own person once they become an adult.
Oh no not the voluntary mandatory fun nights out for team building.

Veronica does not like "We're like a family." RED FLAG 'sociopath'😂😂😂
Exactly. Once they say Family...disappear.
This is such an excellent point, and you articulated it so well.
Anytime "we're just like a family," is uttered, it is time to go!
The two places I worked that were the most toxic both would reiterate "we're like a family." ugh.
Also, stay away from family run businesses. They always bring in relatives who have no idea what they're doing who happen to be your new manager or replacement.

Why is everyone so FAKE on job interviews? It’s like people who go to dinner on a 1st date and sit there Bullshi##### each other the entire time pretending like they’re some incredible person they’re not. No but everyone in comments is about family but the passive aggressive remarks about her trying to negotiate higher salary and them making into a joke .. I once negotiated and my manager kept reminding me about how it was an exception and I need to work harder than others, for like a year. Then I got promoted but told that since i already got the higher salary when I started, my promotion comes with no payrise and it's a career opportunity! I left straight away then.
