We’re not too sure how the residents of South Dakota view their winter snow storms, but a prediction of a slight dusting of snow for the area turned into almost a foot of snow. Not something you want to see when you’re traveling and living on a motorcycle.

I live in Idaho and a gold prospector friend of mine rode a two-wheel-drive Ural motorcycle with a sidecar all winter. He was quite a sight to see coming over the mountain to town with a fur hat, goggles, big gauntlet style fur mittens on, and all hunched up over his motorcycle to stay warm LOL...

I got into a blizzard on the New York State Thruway (I-90) east of Buffalo. It was 75 degrees when I left Cleveland. I was a young buck and fearless. I left the tollway to head north on 81 and had to stop. The state patrol brought me to their garage, let me stay the night, and we had a great time.

I road through "Freezing Fog" outside of Wasco, Oregon heading to camp at Cottonwood Canyon State Park. "Freezing Fog" are two terrifying words when you're on two wheels. By the time I realized I was in it I only could try to push through. I just watched the road and hoped that there was still enough ambient heat from the day that the frost wasn't forming on the road yet. Fortunately I made it safely. Two hours later though a FedEx truck slid off the road and down a steep canyon. The driver was okay from what the Ranger told me.
    Still scary stuff.

A heavy duty merino wool base layer with additional layers and textile outer with liner works great for cold weather. I’ve ridden in 32 degrees and stayed warm. Actually electric heated garment under the outer layer will keep you toasty warm.👍

Great footage. It does look nice when it snows but a pain when camping in a tent. I got caught at a winter rally in New Zealand (Brass Monkey) one year when it blew and snowed and the tent collapsed on me, Had to us a camp chair to hold an area of the tent up so I could stay under cover. It's all about the adventure. Have a very Merry Christmas and all the best for the New Year.

Need to remember that if I'm ever in the Dakotas in September. I've ridden in the 20s to 30s several times, but the Carolinas aren't much for snow, at least where I live. Maybe it's because I hike for most of my camping, but that seemed like a rather larger tent for two people. Hope you warmed up soon after the snow melted off some.

I always got out of that part of the country know later than the second week in August.

Yup been there done that !! I rode 40 miles in a nasty snow storm before I had too pull over. Thankfully I had relative's too stay at. I spent 2 days waiting for my leathers too dry out. Then I rode out to get home . A distance of 110 miles. No big deal you might say . But the temperature was 19 degree's outside!!! Had too bust all the ice off my Harley. I followed a semi for about 90 miles. I was about 6 ft off his icc bumper just too try and stay warm somewhat.i pulled up at home and spent all day wrapped up in a electric blanket. I left my bike in my driveway keys in it

Wow now that’s some snow! I have 2 questions if you don’t mind.
    1. Did you double down on cooking gas prior to the storm? The last time I camped during snow I made coffee a lot to keep warm and the fuel I brought which should of lasted me 2 weeks only lasted me 4 days because of all the coffee I made to keep warm.
    2. We’re you concerned with the Harley being able to start in the cold? I have an Indian tourer have noticed mine struggles very much to start when it’s below 32. To the point I’m fearful it not starting at all when on the road and a cold snap comes by.

C-90 Adventures rode their Honda C-90's or 125 CC Honda Cubs across Canada in the Middle of the winter with studded tires.. I would not want to try it ..
Street bike tires don't work in the snow.. It's a great video to watch on here.. It can snow about anytime in the Rockies.. at High Altitudes..

Beautiful scenery. When you were setting the table in the cabin I noticed something I JUST have to mention. Uncle's JD and HW Jr. used to have some serious talks up in the north Georgia mountains. I would have loved to do touring like what y'all are doing ........... when I was much younger.

Chris, Rich, glad that you guys are ok. Suggestion, pack your gear and head to Las Vegas, Phoenix, Yuma or head to Florida till Spring. Invest in some shovels and bike covers. Since you have solar maybe a little electric heater for the tent. Hell I was cold just watching...

My ex & I had a side car on our bike & we traveled quite a few times over snowy passes. We could & did go pretty much anywhere we wanted. Froze even with our heated vests but it was great.

Oh wow "guys". Your video reminds me of several Boy Scout camps I have managed to survive. : ) I live in Washington State. The weather does get rather cccccolde during the "Hwinterrr". I commend you both. If this is any consolation and you are in Washington State sometime during the Winter one day, let me know and I will keep a warm pot of coffee on the stove, a warm fireplace, an extra room. "We'll keep the lights on for you". Sincerely

Nice video-different. I would have invested in a couple 10x12’ tarps to cover my bikes up. I always everyday carry one in my trike.

"Dakotas?" HeII's Bells, People! it's time for a firehouse response ... GO SOUTH! NOW!
Yeah, I got caught running South thru Wyoming, racing a southbound storm just a few mines east of me. Then I turned east, and got hammered by the storm. Highway patrol was just closing the freeway when I passed them. A patrolman followed me over the Divide to make sure I made it. A rancher put me up in his bunk-house.

You guys are incredible. Seriously man, I just found your channel this evening and I am in love with your videos.
It's funny, I was just thinking of how I can travel full time on my bike and quit my job. Seeing you guys do this is pretty incredible and so very inspiring.
I just got back from my first trip out west from FL. Managed to get 3 weeks off work and make my way towards Utah and CO. Unfortunately my trip was cut short a little bit when I hit a deer! My bike was actually totaled, which isn't necessarily a bad thing since I got a new bike through insurance haha. I was totally fine, but man I excited to give it another shot and take my time on the road this time around.
Just curious, would you guys have any suggestions on how to make money on the road other than through the means of RUclips and social media? I was thinking of getting a part-time job and working remotely somehow, I think I can land something like that. But I'm sure you guys have seen and thought of a lot of ways to make the cash on the road. Any suggestions!

    • @TwoWheelsBigLife
      @TwoWheelsBigLife  3 года назад

Check out Rat Race Rebellion - we haven't used it yet, but it does seem to offer a lot of remote computer work. Also, there's workamping at many campground and these places are always looking. Around the holidays you can work for Amazon and they offer a place for a hard side camper. Also check out the Sugar Beet harvest which happens every fall. Once you start looking there are lots of ways to earn money while on the road. Best of luck!

I travel by pushbike, with a trailer for my dog, and I only do it in Autumn and winter. If it is a cold snowy day, when we wake, we don'[t go anywhere, just hunker down in the tent. I ride my bike in weather no colder then -5 C, at that point, we stop and hunker down, otherwise we keep on biking. Actually the dog and I like travelling in the cold. The dog more then me as he is warm and dry inside his trailer. I do feel the cold on the bike a bit, but that is part of cycletouring. Did back in the day ride a motorbike, but wanted the cheaper cleaner life plus I didn't want the dog to be copping the exhaust of the MB. I only travel for 6 months of the year, I do have bush home to live in.
