They name an elephant with his son's name and kill it on the battlefield (you can notice a dead elephant on battlefield when this phrase comes in the intro) and say "Ashwatthama is dead" for Dhronacharya to hear, and "kunjaraha (elephant)" slowly so that they can deceive him on the battlefield to think his son was dead (and technically not telling a lie since Ashwathama the elephant is actually dead). This makes it easier for them to kill Drona since he is distraught because he thinks his son is dead, and gets distracted in the battlefield.
