I worked on the fires in 2016 in Orange, Homboldt, and Trinity national Forrest. The CDCR guys are the most respected, nice and humble workers out there. It’s sucks bc we were told not to communicate with them in any shape or fashion. Not even simple gestures as hello or waiving. But they worked hard and were always humble. That’s all I got.
After that little episode I didn't finish watching the documentary respect to all the inmates working on the front line to fight wildfire in California keep up the good work.
What a brilliant idea using the prisoners. I hope it gives all of them a helping hand to a better life. They did a fantastic job so it proves they can carry on in the same manner. Congratulations to each one of you.
Many years ago, I fought fire with inmates like this. As a non-inmate firefighter, we were forbidden from even talking to the inmates. They do the very hardest jobs to fight wildfires. We all train to know how to do it but city and county firefighters rarely actually do that hard work. We make a good bit of money for our time fighting the same fire in which these brave inmates get paid only $1 a day to face the toughest work in the most dangerous conditions the fire has to offer. They say that slavery has ended in this country but it remains, at least in part, when incarcerated individuals make pennies compared to the rest of us doing easier work on the same job and, in some states, they are required to work without making anything at all. I don't think any crime justifies someone having to work for nothing or next to nothing. They ought to make at least the minimum wage and they should make both for the hours they fight fire and for the hours they train to be competent and fit enough to do so. We may not be able to tell the inmates but the rest of the firefighters all have a deep respect for them and the hard work that they do to help us put out the fire. I'm really glad you were able to facilitate this meeting between this inmate crew and the owner of one of the houses they saved because it's a rare event when someone who has been an inmate is treated like a person, let alone the heroes that these firefighters are. If we want people to be able to come out of jail or prison and succeed, we, as a society, have to be willing to give them a chance and I say this as someone who has never gotten more than a speeding ticket.
This Sylmar fire was from November 2008. Seventy mph Santa Anna winds. After 12 years the problem has only grown exponentially worse.
