Here is a beautiful little hand crank W&G machine with amazing hand wheel detail. Because shipping was expensive, still is, the W&G heads were shipped over to Britain and the hand wheel assembly added here. It makes the W&G hand crank a unique combination of American and British engineering.

Very thrilled to have great-grandmothers Willcox & Gibbs fully functional foot treadle machine with stand and three drawers on the side containing all the original bits and pieces and the original owners instruction manual. And I have my grandmothers portable Wilcox & Gibbs motorized version. Imagine how many clothes and household goods have passed over the cloth plate in the many years they were used. What is a woman without a sewing machine?

I'm perplexed as to why you didn't make a big thing of the fact that this machine used only a single thread, since this is quite an amazing feature, and is basically what "chainstitch" is all about.
All sewing machines generally have at least two threads. One at the top, and one underneath.
The reason it is called a chainstitch is because a single thread is looped again and again in a chain.
( This is very easy to do just with your fingers and a piece of string. )
Still used today for stitching the tops of paper sacks shut.
    I remember opening these sacks.
The stitching would completely "unzip" the whole length with one good yank, but only from the right end.
If you got the wrong end, nothing would happen, or rather it would just tighten up.

Oop's I've spelt machine wrong again, this time in the title! If I had a pound every time I did that I'd have enough for a meal!

I have had one of these for years. I actually only bought it for display, but now have an urge to restore it and get it running. Where can I find videos on how to do that? Is there also a place where I can get spare parts if necessary? I live in Western Canada.

Brown and sharp machine shop manufactured these for Wilcox & Gibbs up until WWII. Have you found a source for needles? they are distinct in that they have a spline instead of a flat.

I have one too which I thought would be good for knitwear, however it is so slow, even on the largest stitch, it would take too long. I don't really want to spoil it by adding a motor

How does the hook stay in time with a belt that can slip? Or is it that critical.

My understanding is these were made by Brown & Sharpe in Providence, Rhode Island and not New York.

I have a W & G chain stitch machine. It is a treadle in the original cabinet. The presser foot bar is frozen. What can I use to get it to release? Thank you!!

Just wondering if you can be of assistance. Yesterday we rescued a Willcox and Gibbs sewing machine from a skip. I would like to be able to date it from the serial number but cannot find any information about later models on the internet. Can you advise or point me in the right direction for further research?
