Revolutionizing CGM with FreeStyle Libre

- Daily diabetes monitoring hurts. If you or someone you love has diabetes, you're probably familiar with the tedious routine of glucose monitoring, the painful fingersticks to draw a drop of blood and the bulky traditional glucose monitoring equipment requiring daily calibrations. These inconveniences can make it difficult to stick to a diabetes management plan, opening the door for complications to arise.
What if you could take the pain and inconvenience out of glucose monitoring and experience a better way of managing the condition?
For the 30.3 million Americans who have diabetes, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's approval of the FreeStyle® Libre is that life-changing experience. The revolutionary system eliminates the hurdles of traditional glucose monitoring and requires no routine fingersticks or fingerstick calibrations.

We're so happy to hear this Arjun! Thank you for sharing.
@@abbott when, where can I get one? How much? Can u send me one please?
This was a GREAT video by the marketing folks finding the right people. It was cool hearing the story of how the sensor was developed (especially pipetting the glucose oxidase by hand and fighting that capillary action with those micro pipettes) and hearing the story of the person who evolved from 45-second hanging blood drops to what he visioned as a scanner. This has been the dream of hundreds of thousands of Type 1's, and Abbott's scientists and dreamers figured it out. PLEASE keep this affordable. I'm begging you. This is a life-changer and while I'd love for everyone on the team to be making a huge salary, I'm begging for this to stay affordable. Test strips that cost $1.50-$2.00 each are no bargain.
Hi Jason, what material is the electrode made out of?is it a metal or a polymer?
@@georgekariuki8614 I am not the right person to ask, but from what I've read about it, it is likely a combination of materials that they call a "wired enzyme". I imagine a patent would identify more about how it is built. It's so thin that it is flexible and is likely an array of hundreds of cells that contain glucose oxidase that get enabled over time, along with a measure of temperature to relatively determine the reaction rate and look up the associated relative glucose levels. Pretty awesome evolution from strips and even vials of colorimetric assays from a spectrophotometer!
Thank you! I directed and edited this for Abbott
The sensors are great but any knock and the filament bends and is then not working. Is there a better location to attach rather than the back of the arm ? Maybe Abbot could develop a protector to be worn over the sensor
Hi Mark, these are great questions that our Diabetes Care team can help answer. If you call the number we provided in our last note, they will be able to help.
I use freestyle libre since 2017. Its superior vs finger sticks monithoring as long as it works correctly. Unfortunately there is a problems with this. Sensors are very delicate and prone to decalibration. That results in to low glucose reading known as "Always Low" problem The problem is so serve that sometimes glucose level displayed by freesyle libre is 80-90mg lower than real glucose level. This is the biggest flaw of this system. Its difficult to base a glucose monitoring in something like that happens. A therory that frestyle don't need calibration is not true. It is needed to check a system from time to time by finger sticks to ensure that the readings are reliable. There is a pleace for improvement their quality and stability and I hope that one day this problem will be solved. Abbott customer care is great and replace a defective sensors quite fast and for free. In my opinion a calbration of he readings by using a data from finger sticks could be a method for increase precise of readings. Freestyle reader is also a glucomether, I can't find any reason why those function is not available. This functionality can be especially important if you use only reader or your mobile and freestyle libre app. Freestyle libre can be combined with transmitters such Miao Miao and be a true CGM. Sumarising if sensors will be more robust and readings more reliable (again "Always Low" problem) it may become the best CGM on the market.
Hi Dariusz, thanks for your note and the feedback. If you'd like, please let us know what country you live in and we can connect you with your local Diabetes Care team as they will be able to best assist.
@@abbott I live in Poland. There is no problem with Abbot Diabetes Care in Poland. They assistance is OK and they replace a defective sensors quite fast. Problem is that sensors itself are prone to decalibrate and often defective. This result in "always low" problem. This happens definitely to often and combined with impossibility of calibration the reader ruins performance the freestyle libre. I like this your system when it works and provide a complete map of my glucose level changes. But a problem reported by me (and many of users worldwide including comments below this video) is still waiting to be solved. I wish you reconstruct those sensors to be more robust and reliable than are now or improve a quality control in your factory. Thats your job.
Hi Dariusz, thank you for your detailed feedback and we'll be sure to share this with our Diabetes Care team. If you need anything else, please reach out to our Diabetes Care team in Poland as they will be able to best assist.
I wish it was approved for children my daughter is 8 and recently diagnosed with type 1. We're in U.S. and was just declined by insurance.
It's sad that insurance doesn't see the value in reduced ER visits, significantly reduced lifetime complications, and improved patient life. You might call Abbott and inquire about any potential drug savings cards they might offer. I was getting 10 test strips a day approved by my insurance for T1, and a one month supply of test strips was costing insurance $500 a month. The sensors themselves (early on when this was first released) had a retail shelf price of $70 at Walmart (now it's higher) -- but might still be less expensive than 10 glucose strips per day. You might appeal that denial if you can figure out what insurance is paying for test strips vs this device. A 14 day sensor at $120ish might well come in equal to or less cost than test strips.
@@jasonbengel who's your insurer,10 strips a day is too good. I am interested.
@@KrutarthBhatt1 Insurance doesn't make the rule, it's really the employer contract. In this day and age, with type 1 diabetes, the standard of care is now CGMS. In the 70s, it was urinating on a test strip. Good luck, Krutarth, with the insurance battle.
I just purchased the 14 Libre, I can honestly say that I am not impressed!! It read 15 to points lower than my actual finger sticks. This is unsafe, I got this to avoid the finger sticks as my fingers are overly sensitive. I find myself doing more sticks than ever because I don’t trust the unit. Had anyone else had these problems??

15mg/dl is a very small diference. The problem is that readings by using this system can be more that 80mg/dl lower than measured by finger sticks.
Hi Dariusz, thanks for your note. We've responded to your first note.
I have just replaced two sensors in less than a week . They are not robust enough and at $90 each too expensive
Hi Mark, thanks for your note and we're very sorry to hear this. Can you let us know what country you live in?
Maybe they were defective however $90 is cheaper than the cost of strips and lancets Never mind the inconvenience and pain .
Sassy Jones - Where in the world are you buying lancets and strips??? Because in mid usa, you can get the strips and lancets for a month, way cheaper than $90..... This would be a great product if it work..... Trust me, you will have to keep doing finger sticks.... just look at the fine print...... BUT THE BIGGEST THING IS, THESE ARE NOT ACCURATE..... Hello Abbott,
as I know Abbott was the first company who made continouos glucose system without finger stick calibration in 2014.
It was a breakthrough!
With Libre most of type 1 patients need only small amount of rapid insulin (much less than before Libre) but now insulin patches are very big, expensives and uncomfortables
with a huge amount of insulin. There is currently no suitable insulin patch product on the market.(!)
That’s why I think it would be a good idea to develop a small, daily refillable insulin patches too.
I'm sure Abbott's engineers could develop and manufacture a suitable insulin patch products too.
Thanks,
Peter

thank you abott......for the freestyle libre
Hi there, thanks for your kind note.
i am a bit disappointed with the Freestyle libre 2...it should be improved cause for example if I got hyper for like 5 hours continuously, it only beeps once when you exceed the value that you set as threshold, but does not beep in some frequences to let you know you are still in the hyper-area...the same for hypo...it happend to me during night, I was the whole night very high, cause my insulin pump had some error, but the sensor didnt beep at all to let me know I am high...and other negative - you can either switch off the sound or there is a sound for each action you make, but I really dont want that each time I scan it beeps...I would like a possibility to beep if low/beep if high but not beep after each scanning, cause its quite annoying especially when you share the office with someone and scan like 30 times a day...so please try to improve those negatives! thanks

Hello Abbott, first of all thanks for the Libre2 product too!!! Is it possible to send the LIBRE2 every minute BG data to a smartwatch by bluetooth technology? Thanks, Peter
Hi Peter, there is no app specifically for smartwatches, however, some smartwatches mirror the notifications received on a mobile phone and these watches may receive alarms and other app notifications.
Hello, many thanks for the fast answer. Does it mean that mobile is going to catch the BG data without scanning in the near future? Thanks, Peter
