I bought the Pittsburgh Pass-Thru socket set because of all the times I wish I had one in the past. Working on my car there isn't a lot of room under the hood and I kept saying to myself, "Self, you gotta get a pass-thru socket set." Well, I have had my set for about a year and I have used it a lot. But NOT on my car! Weird, but no complaints. Every time I used it it was around my property, usually for the pass-thru capability. One time it was for the clearance and not even my smallest 1/4" ratchet/socket combination would fit. This did. So I highly recommend a pass-thru set to anyone, and the Pittsburgh is cheap yet of high enough quality that it seems like a great value to me. Plus you get Harbor Freight's great warranty. Can't go wrong.
I've never need pass through sockets yet. The only time I think they might have come in handy is the top nut on sway bar end links. It seems there is always something in the way to get a wrench or a socket on them.
They are more of a specialty socket set. I’ve used them just to use them before. They work fine but I don’t work with a lot of all thread rod, which is where a pass thru set might shine. Of course there is the low profile side of the pass thru which is an excellent way for a DIY guy to get some low profile sockets.
Bill E Thanks. I wasn't trying to 'sell' anything, just point out why I chose the one I did. Kobalt also has the same design as the Pittsburgh set and I think they have a 1/4" set as well. I think if you end up with either Pittsburg or Kobalt (from lowes) you won't be disappointed as both offer way more flexibility than any one else that has a pass thru socket set on the market. If I helped in anyway I'm glad I could help out. Im not brand loyal at all. I do have biases as most people do, but when someone makes a better tool than someone else I think it's a good idea to pass that information along to other guys and gals. I do still however get caught up in the 'hype' of some gimmick tools so I'm not totally immune to idiotic purchases from time to time. LoL
Hard Knocks Forge Had to correct my spelling, proprietary. Hard to say as well as spell. I was puzzling over what brand to buy. You just made a very good point. Confessed tool junky.
two reasons I preferred this to their other socket sets is that these are 6 point instead of that 12 point rusty bolt stripper, and these also have 16mm and 18mm sockets.
Yep that's one of the things I've thought about using it for. I sold a table and chairs a few months ago and had to use a regular wrench. The bolts were cross threaded and it took forever and it sucked. If I'd have had this it would have been 10 seconds and done.
Good idea on the pittsburgh, never thought about it. Also husk can work with craftsman and gear wrench model they're all the same type. I've bought husky so that I can used the craftsman socket that I've got and didn't have the ratchet for it.
I knew there were more tool brands out there that would fit. I'll have to checkout husky and see if they have an 8mm, and a 9mm in 6pt sockets. Those will be the two I'm missing from a complete set other than 20+mm sizes. I did find an 8mm in Craftsman but it was a spline drive and I'm not sold on those just yet.
Nice. Maybe I should have gotten the Pittsburg set instead of the Stanley, but that's the beauty of tools: you can get the same type and just say "you can never have enough tools"!
I heard the Stanley was the same kind of sockets and ratchet as the pitty set. I'm pretty sure the Kobalt is the same style as well. And no you can never have enough when it comes to tools.
We dont have that kind of drivers in finland with the removable shaft that has bits on both ends, but i would have loved one with lawnmower repairs and services stuff i used to do. There is some stupid screws on briggs pull starts which i think were a quarterofaninch in size and nothing else fits and most of th time my 1/4 socket was missing. A 6in1 with 2 sizes of nutdriver would have been more useful and easier to keep track of than a tiny socket with one purpose.
😁 oh i am not alone with this problem! You might know the screws im talking about, the ones that hold the grille on top of the magneto, that look like fake plastic screws with stupidly low heads. By the way, after finding a cool new channel and commenting on an 7 months old video, and getting a response from the creator of the content, is something that i think says alot. I shall show my support by subscribing.
I'm not a normal RUclips channel at all. Yeah I know the screws you are talking about. Ever try a pair of Vampliers on them? I use Vampire tools a lot when it comes to the small engine stuff. I actually carry a pair of the slip joints in my pocket wherever I go. They are part of my every day carry.
Francisco Cisco Kobalt makes a set also just like this one but I think it also comes with a screwdriver handle and if you buy it at lowes I think it's only like $25-30.
Sometimes when using these sockets, you manage to push up the retaining ring inside. When this happens at just the right position the ball bearing inside falls out. You could go back to Harbor Freight and they replaced it without question. But I found a better solution that does same time. I went to the bike shop with ball bearing and had them measure it. I bought 5/32 (the size of the ball bearing) and bought a pack of 26 ball bearings for $2.99 plus tax.
That's a great idea. I'm at least 20 minutes (30 miles) from the closest HFT around. I try not to use the warranty on any tools that I own by not breaking them, but they still break on occasion. If this does happen I'll be sure to keep this in mind. We have plenty of bike shops around town.
The packaging is the worst part of that little set...I just mixed up a little MFI and BF to pop them out and threw them in a small SK box to keep them all together.
Gear Wrench Vortex, Craftsman Pass Through, and Crescent work with the Husky Pass Through set. Gear Wrench probably the best of all 4 brands. The Pittsburgh may be 1 of the better brands for it's style.
Hey nice post sir. I like a couple of things about these tools, the price lol and that you can use a wrench on them, reminds me of back in the day changing spark plugs on my motorcycle with a spark plug socket and a wrench
Yep, and flexibility is key for getting to those pain in the ass fasteners. Kobalt and Stanley also make a set like the Pittsburgh set I have so you may be able to find them cheaper in another brand.
Busted Knuckle Automotive yeah they do. They also sell a reversible ratcheting flex head serpentine belt tool now also. The serp belt tools are worth it.
I haven't had that problem yet, but I haven't used them a whole lot either. I have them in the truck for a set that I can always have with me where ever I end up. I'll have to keep that in mind, but I like that you can use them with ratcheting wrenches unlike the other ones like Craftsman, Gearwrench, Husky, etc...
charles philippe No, not in this video. Come to think of it I haven't used them at all except at the pick and pull junkyard. I haven't ran into a situation where I needed them, I've always used my low profile Mac sockets, or my Matco (Gearwrench) serpentine belt tool that comes with pass thru sockets and a wrench handle. I still say if you NEED a pass thru socket set then this is by far the best style out there, also Stanley and Kobalt make the 3/4 hex drive system. If you don't NEED one and work on cars, DIY or PRO, get the GW serp belt tool and add the other sockets you need.
That wa a better answer than i hoped for.....was waiting too see some one use them in situations to determine if i NEED them or a gimmick thing lol....thank you so much sir appreciate the reply. cheers mate
Rare example of China trying to make something cheaper and actually producing something more useful. I've got a set of the Husky, the ratchet and 3/4 socket live on my HF tube roller....all it's ever been used for. Good to have options tho!
Chaos Garage Yeah it's nice when something works out better than originally intended. I didn't get them for the pass thru operation, but for the low profile abilities.
Yeah it was an earlier video before I actually realized just how many kids are on the adult side of RUclips... I'm not perfect now by any means, but it's better I'm sure. Work in progress as always.
I think it's actually the best one out there, but I bought it with my own money so I'm a little biased. I did a lot of research before I bought a pass thru set though.
Adding to the 3/4 socket to handle options. . Stanley 16-Piece Passthru Set at Walmart $19.00 uses the same 3/4 system.
Nice I did not know Stanly made a set of pass thru sockets. I'll have to check them out next time I'm in there.

How did you take out the socket wrench out of the thing
A little bf&mfi (brute force & mother freaking ignorance…all those are ridiculously tighter than they need to be.
I've never need pass through sockets yet. The only time I think they might have come in handy is the top nut on sway bar end links. It seems there is always something in the way to get a wrench or a socket on them.

Thanks for posting. Your comments on the proprietary design sold me on the Harbor Freight brand. Thanks again.

Bill E I get that one mixed up as well, but knew what you were saying. I've used my set just to try it out and it's worked great for me so far.
Also a 1/4 nut driver on the screwdriver if you take out the bit.
DOYLECLEVERLOBE1 Yes it really is a 5 in 1. Good catch.
I have the Pittsburgh set, plus a set of Kobalt in quarter inch that was $4 during the holidays.
That's my kind of deal, $4 for a set. Can't beat that. I'll have to keep my eye out for that sale.
two reasons I preferred this to their other socket sets is that these are 6 point instead of that 12 point rusty bolt stripper, and these also have 16mm and 18mm sockets.
Hey Knock love the Pittsburgh set came in handy putting my kitchen table together. Table had 6" caridge bolts ⚡️.
Yep that's one of the things I've thought about using it for. I sold a table and chairs a few months ago and had to use a regular wrench. The bolts were cross threaded and it took forever and it sucked. If I'd have had this it would have been 10 seconds and done.

Hard Knocks Forge The Pittsburg set has the extension and adapter to make it a regular ratchet. The Stanley set did not.
Might be a 6in1 that harbor freight junkdriver
Yeah I think it's actually a 5 n 1 because both sides are 1/4" hex so it does come with a 1/4" nutdriver
We dont have that kind of drivers in finland with the removable shaft that has bits on both ends, but i would have loved one with lawnmower repairs and services stuff i used to do. Oh yeah I know what you're talking about I seem to have trouble finding my 10mm sockets also... damn things walk off every time I need them.
😁 oh i am not alone with this problem! You might know the screws im talking about, the ones that hold the grille on top of the magneto, that look like fake plastic screws with stupidly low heads. Good idea of using a ratcheting flex wrench on it. Not a fan of HF but I think I'll pick up a set. Good video man, keep'em coming.
Francisco Cisco Kobalt makes a set also just like this one but I think it also comes with a screwdriver handle and if you buy it at lowes I think it's only like $25-30.

How the fu*k do you get the husky out of the packaging?!?!?!
The packaging is the worst part of that little set...I just mixed up a little MFI and BF to pop them out and threw them in a small SK box to keep them all together.
your videos are good.Pls try not to use F word.Thanx.
Jasbir Virk my newer videos are better with the language. Back when I first started putting videos out no one watched, so it didn't really matter.
Gear Wrench Vortex, Craftsman Pass Through, and Crescent work with the Husky Pass Through set. Gear Wrench probably the best of all 4 brands. The Pittsburgh may be 1 of the better brands for it's style.

You probably know by now, but gearwrench makes a 3/8 set like this one with a locking swivel head
Busted Knuckle Automotive yeah they do. They also sell a reversible ratcheting flex head serpentine belt tool now also. The serp belt tools are worth it.
Wish the detents didnt fall out other then that I love this piece of shit!
I haven't had that problem yet, but I haven't used them a whole lot either. I have them in the truck for a set that I can always have with me where ever I end up. I used them like a whore uses her mouth tho lol
Did you use the 20% coupon?
Yes I did. HFT has a 25% off coupon for this mothers day sunday also.
where are u from knocks
I'm just outside of Kansas City, on the Kansas side of course. The Missouri side of KC sucks.
aannnnnd did not see him using them

Fuck you, it’s a fucking tool review for fucks sake.
Yeah I didn't even think about that when I got them. I think they were given to me anyway.
Chaos Garage I'm almost sure they didn't think about that either or it would have been reflected more in the price...
Nice video. A little excessive with the F-bombs but hey, we're all adults here (mostly) Thanks!
Yeah it was an earlier video before I actually realized just how many kids are on the adult side of RUclips... I'm not perfect now by any means, but it's better I'm sure. Work in progress as always.
cool tool
I think it's actually the best one out there, but I bought it with my own money so I'm a little biased. I did a lot of research before I bought a pass thru set though.
I found the review video YES!!! Lol
Yeah it's an old one, but that set is actually one of the best sets out there, as far as a pass thru set is concerned.
I lost my 1/2 in socket had to go out and buy a whole new set. At least i have two pass though extentions
SY Sublime sadly that’s about the only way you can get more extensions. Kinda wish they sold a couple different sizes individually or in a kit even.
