Story Time, episode 1: The 'Otherworld'... (Bernardo Kastrup)

  • This is a myth about the nature of reality and of our condition as conscious entities in it, with ramifications into metaphysics, life after death, survival of identity, the telos of world history, and the unconscious agendas of people and groups. Fact or fiction? You be the judge. But whatever the answer, this is an intriguing, aesthetically pleasing story for the enjoyment of both right- and left-brained connoisseurs; a sculpture of thought at play in the sandpit of ontological possibilities...

    About the graphical effects in this video: All graphics are generated by 'Morphogence,' a generative art algorithm I've developed over the past 5 years. Morphogence uses a cellular automaton framework to simulate a universe whose entire phenomenology is determined by artificial neuronal networks. In other words, none of the graphical effects in this video is explicitly created by a human being, but emerge from a form of machine intelligence that constantly struggles between the opposite poles of structure and chaos; habit and novelty. If you are an academic, an artist, or would otherwise like to explore commercial uses of Morphogence, please contact me through this contact form: www.bernardokas.... I recently dreamt walking down a long corridor and seeing 2 of myself in multiple rooms. Each wearing a vr headset, completely oblivious of the other standing just inches away. Realizing they had forgotten they were playing a 'game' and how unlikely it was they would hear me if I asked them to keep the noise down, I turned the lights off in each of the rooms and walked away. A dream is never just a dream.

    Thanks AirFiveR! Yes, I uploaded a few more stories, as you probably already found out. And I do have three published books.

    Again very similar to Tom Campbell's My Big TOE where we are avatars in a virtual reality, programmed by consciousness, and the aim of the game is to increase the quality of our consciousness, and therefore the quality of the consciousness of Mind, through our free will decisions.

    Interesting myth! I thought of the same concepts, but instead of several meta self I thought of it as one big self that is EVERYTHING. Indeed a role play of sorts but I visualised it more that such a meta-self ultimate goal would be an accumulation of everything, and I really mean everything. It just wants to "grow" and consumes every emotion, every experience, every situation trough trillions of forms and in order to best do this it has to forget itself, lose itself in the dream. And as we know we can only grow from relationships, if all there was that is was me, then I could not grow, which is why "ego" are temporary programs and characters this original meta self plays.

    I like this metaphor.. .however, have you considered that "our level" is just another of the "meta-levels". What gives you the confidence to suggest that we are the "end-point" of the meta-levels. Could we ourselves be yet another "meta-level" and our dreams or sub-conscious are in fact spawning off new levels?
    You use the idea of a hierarchy, but what if we instead inserted the idea of a fractal structure instead, what would be the implications of this?

    • @bernardokastrup
      @bernardokastrup  10 лет назад +1

      Lexx Icon I like the idea of fractal structure and, in fact, use it in another "Story Time" video, have a look. As for our level being the bottom level or not, well, if we are meta-players in a level below us, we don't seem to be aware of it, which makes the story a little difficult. Our artificial reality and gaming technologies may suggest, but I think it's too much fantasy to say that characters in our games are conscious, so I didn't make that part of this myth.

  • @herschel92
    @herschel92 12 лет назад

    Nice theory, but shouldn't the game extend beneath our reality where we are 'meta-players' to a multitude of beings below us, where we direct their realities as done with us by beings of higher levels?

    In principle yes, but then we would know, wouldn't we? :)

      Well, we wouldn't know if it would be something that we do "unconsciously".

    I like the story but I think that it could be that the meta-selfs are
    not playing characters completely independent from each other on a
    sub-level. I would rather think that there is one main player split into
    two others (representing good and evil) and those two are split into
    several other players (entities that represent one aspect of our human
    psyche like, for example, envy, hate, hope, love, etc.) each having
    their own goals in the game and our consciousness is so to speak a
    vessel for them and a playboard itself. So the outcomes of the smaller
    games played within our human consciousness will ultimately determine
    the outcome of the complete human narrative.

    It is fun to entertain ideas like this sometimes, but I generally dislike the idea of looking at life as a game. If you view life as a game, then all of the worst kinds of suffering are also part of a "game" (such as children getting cancer and suffering until they die). It would mean that our meta-selves playing this game are quite callous and twisted.

    • @bernardokastrup
      @bernardokastrup  10 лет назад +8

      Some games are pretty serious and no reason for jokes. But they are still games so long as at the "game over," only the game ends and not you. It is also tricky to pass value judgments on the overall game from the limited perspective of being within the game.

    Excellent stuff as usual by Bernardo! Anyone who finds this difficult to understand, should read the Yoga Vasistha. The dream within a dream within a dream story of Queen Lila and a number of other stories make this concept easy to understand for non-technical audience.
