    I’ve been barefoot for 12 years. Everything in this video confirms what I have intuitively figured out. My son, now 11, has almost never worn shoes. He functions fine, along with the other 10,000 Kenyan kids, running barefoot over rocky surfaces. I’m always amazed at how many people think we are supposed to wear shoes. I reminded them there’s 50 million years of human existence and only a small fraction of that have we worn shoes.
    Thank you shoes for toe fungus and plantar fasciitis. The plantar fasciitis went away when I started going barefoot, unfortunately still fighting the fungus. I hate shoes

      Hmmmmm. Too bad for us Americans,huh. We gotta keep wearing tennis shoes, sandals, cowboy boots, hiking boots that are *big* enough to be wearing moonwalkers shoes. American women (and Canadian women who have to wear protected shoes by having insulation in and out of them,when it's cold from the ice,sleet,and from snow) who wear stillettos,sandals,and women's shoes gotta tolerate the daily aches and pains having their feet being encased in shoes.
      Instead of whenever we Americans are finally home after a long day from work, after being on our feet almost all of the time, instead of walking barefoot and just being free! 😁 You Kenyans are lucky. 😀.
      Because we Americans don't get to have that luxury. Except when we're at the beach or on some nature trail. Then that's when we have the rare luxury of being barefoot and just letting our feet to *breathe.* And just being free!

    Great video but it doesn't tell you how terrible the transition from cushioned life to minimal can be. I love vivo's and have been wearing them as my main shoes for more than half a decade already and my feet have never been stronger or healthier. I walk all day in them in the office and the city. I run in the Primus Lites 10+ miles every weekend and currently preparing for a marathon as well. However getting to the point where my feet would gradually but surely be able to tackle anything I threw at them with no support with zero pain or fatigue was a pretty long process. The whole process probably took a year to fully transition. Granted I had zero training and just casually started walking in them. Properly running in them took a couple months. Your foot is a muscle and like every part of your body you need to train it to work to it's full potential, (which wouldn't be neccessary if i never wore cushioned shoes in the first place). And to be honest sometimes during that phase, my feet hurt, stiffened, or were simply sore. But not once were they seriouslly injured. I think during this period most people just stop wearing them or over exerted themselves which is why the hype died down. But now I literally swear by them and going back to traditional shoes suck. I can no longer wear good looking traditional shoes like the nike flynit without my feet in hurting or feeling unbalanced simply because they're so poorly designed to the foots anatomy. So if you think you're fine without, can run hella far without injury, or need a specific shoe for work, ie steel toe boots than maybe they're not for you. But I can confidently recommend Vivo shoes specifically because of how crazy minimal they are and their ability to let your feet build natural comfort, strength, and flexibility. I would say try it, even if you only wear them part time you'll still feel the benifits. Eventually you'll be able to stand up longer, walk further, and run forever in them and people ask you if they make you uncomfortable and you can smile and say that they in fact feel great.

      @@KXP70 It probably took 3-4 months for the constant calf fatigue to subside. My calves are massive now, haha. @@user-cn4tw6ox5b I have a tendency to rush things, but I'll try my best to ease into it then. Thanks for the pragmatic advice! Now for me to get some Vibrams.
      My main focus atm is strength and size training, as well as improving fitness so I can run, cycle and swim far and effectively. I do intend to wear these as much as possible as you advise because having foot stability is very important for a lot of standing exercises in the gym. I used to use my weightlifting shoe (solid heel) for overhead press for example, but the 3/4" raised heel made it super uncomfortable on my lower back. I didn't realize it was the shoes causing the issue until I tried my other footwear that had far less heel lift. The problem with them is they're quite unstable due to having a squidgy sole.

    When I stopped wearing foot wear completely, I realized something that no shoe could: it solved several health issues that I had. It also brought me stability that I never had wearing shoes. Sometimes, even just standing still while wearing "properly fitting" and "well designed" shoes, I would lose my balance. In my experience the concept of first world cities being harmful to a barefooter is a vastly overblown. I've had no problems from LA and San Diego to New York City. The last time I had a foot or leg injury was when wearing shoes.

    It blew my mind when I realized that my arches were only painful when/because their muscles were weak and underdeveloped. I have extremely high arches, high insteps, and very wide feet, and buying shoes has always been an absolute nightmare for me in large part because I have always thought I had to look for shoes with arch support (which were also wide enough, and high enough to accommodate my insteps). Nearly impossible! Now that I've discovered minimalist and barefoot shoes, I finally can find shoes wide enough to accommodate my feet as they are, and I am retraining my feet to be strong enough to need less arch support. What a revelation!

    • @Gsern
      @Gsern 5 лет назад

      It's not quite like going barefoot, but it's the second best thing. I use my Vivos in the winter and when my feet need a rest from running barefoot. Still, I wouldn't and couldn't use them working on a concrete floor all day. There I need more cushioning and protection and be able to move fast for several hours at a time. So there is a place for going barefoot, for minimal shoes and more cushioned protective shoes. I do love the feeling of the ground under my bare feet when running though - especially running in puddles when it's raining! Minimal shoes might not give you the hardened soles of running barefoot, but it still gives you a lot of stability training and makes you run in a similar fashion. Besides, they are probably the most comfortable running shoes I've had...

    • @Gradient_Mtl
      @Gradient_Mtl 5 лет назад

      What makes Vivo shoes in particular different is that they only have a thin rubber sole of a few millimeters + or - depending on type. In my mind, they'll be the closest thing you can get to going barefoot without actually going barefoot. So while having what feels like 4-6 mm of unsupporting rubber underneath your feet isn't technically barefoot, it's practically the same thing if the goal is to build natural strength and flexibility. The only difference is that it protects you from the elements.
      Sincerely the guy who runs in their Primus Lites 10+ miles per week and wears their "Everyday" shoes literally everywhere and I live in the concrete land that is Boston.

I NEVER thought I'd be able to go without arch support. It definitely took some achey and sore months to transition, and I still get sore achilles, but I know it's just reversing the shortened tendon from years of modern footwear! I have pretty wide feet. I grew up barefooted, which I hear can make your feet wide. I ended up getting a Moreton's Neuroma as an adult by squashing my feat into too-narrow shoes. (That's a painful nerve inflammation condition in the feet.)
      I only wear Vivo's now. If I don't, the neuroma comes back (or I can wear normal shoes with an orthotic, but that's not very comfortable). The Vivo's are pretty wide, but not super wide. They are good for me. If my feet were any wider, they wouldn't work however. They may or may not be worth checking out for you.

      Look at Softstar (Primal Runamoc model especially) and Unshoes. Vivobarefoots are too narrow for me, but those two fit. Another problem is that not all toes slope in the same way. Mine are almost straight across, and in Vivos my pinky toes are hanging off the soles.

    Vivo please please please make some astroturf football boots. I have 3 pairs of your shoes for different aspects of my life, but then for football I have to squeeze my feet into my boots.
    I'm sure a Primus trail fg style design would be perfect with more padding on the top perhaps.

      I’d think that if you’re flat footed it’s even more imperative to run with a forefoot strike as the lack of an arch means less shock absorption with a mid foot strike.

      Maybe your water retention is damaged. I'm wondering if plant based diets have something to do with this. People I know on such diets seem to get dry skin worse than anybody else I know. I also wonder how much hot showers affect this. I take cold showers and not only is my skin and hair better, but my hands and feet don't dry up as much. Your feet should leather-ize, not callous, unless you run on jagged mountains or a field of glass. Also, a thin layer of dust, sand, or dirt protects your feet from hard surfaces. If you walk in the city step onto grass/mud every once in a while, or into a patch of dust. Good luck.

    Hardly a conspiracy.
    I agree that barefoot is natural and best, but there are many situations and lifestyles in our modern world that requires protection for the feet (and other parts of the body-we don't generally live on the savanna or in the jungle).
    I hike a lot, but always try to wear lightweight boots wherever possible. I need ankle support. Even when I was a runner wearing canvas pumps my ankles were always a problem.
    Age is also a factor. Gravity tales it's toll.

      I agree with you sir age is a factor. If you've gone your whole life wearing shoes that are failing your foots natural ability, then a switch would be very difficult, due to the dependance on shoes. It's not impossible but it is attainable for most. The best thing about sharing this information though is we can start fresh on youngsters. I'll tell you from experience hiking and running often while wearing barefoot style shoes since I was 10; my ankles are so strong it seems they can not be rolled or injured even on brutal trails.

    • @Haurath
      @Haurath 4 года назад

      The feet contain muscles like near every other part of the body, and just like all those other muscles, they can atrophy from lack of use. Flat foot is just extreme muscle atrophy of the arches, caused by a lifetime of over supportive footwear. That can be corrected through barefoot/minimal.

    • @feg3akatrey144
      @feg3akatrey144 3 года назад

      @@Haurath I don't entirely disagree, but it is more complicated than that. I happen to have high arches, but those as well as flat feet are highly genetic, origin-wise. Now, while yes, working the muscles, or going barefoot, CAN strengthen the arches, that will not "correct" the issue, only mitigate it.
