You should definitely check out Holly Black’s Tithe series! It’s in the same universe as the Cruel Prince and features Lord Roiben and Kaye, whom we got small sections of in the Cruel Prince. That series was what made me become obsessed with fae books.
I'm so glad you liked it! I love politics and kingmaking AND Fae, and this felt like a good beginning to a series, like a springboard for everything to launch off of. Maybe that's why it had some weaker moments, to give credence to later books? As for Fae book recs, have you read Daughter of the Forest, by Juliet Marillier? It's a beautiful retelling of The Six Swans myth, and it's one of my absolute favorite books.
I just found your channel recently and LOVE IT!! Every time you murmur your negative thoughts on a subject or book or whatever, I can’t help but literally laugh out loud!!! Soooo refreshing that you are so real! I’m excited to binge watch all of your videos!!!
I definitely agree with you, Heather! I don’t really like faerie books but I also gave this 5/5 stars. I was worried about the hype, but I still flew through it and had a lot of fun reading it. I think people just need to go into this book without such high expectations. It’s still going to read like a typical YA book. It’s not the greatest piece of literature of all time haha. But I loved the themes and the brutality and the politics. I loved that Jude was a badass and a morally grey character.
I thought it was okay and I really think that it has a lot to do with the hype level for this one. I liked reading about the sisters- I loved Vivian! My review is going up tomorrow and I hate that I struggled to look at this objectively because of the hype, but because of the level of raving I expected something very unique and instead, it played out mediocre for me. I’m happy you enjoyed it though! There are so many good fae books and definitely some flops too!
I just finished listening to The Cruel Prince on audiobook about fifteen minutes ago, and I can definitely relate to your thoughts on the book. I liked this book, but it ultimately didn't live up to all of the hype that seems to be surrounding it. I felt like The Cruel Prince had a major "been there, done that" feel to it. Despite the fact that The Cruel Prince didn't exactly live up to the hype for me personally, I'll probably continue to read the series as more books are released.
Writer6 It definitely gives me slight anxiety to upload my review tomorrow since I am one of the few who didn’t LOOOVE it, but in the end reading is a personal experience. I agree with you about continuing the series, I think I even say that in my video. The ending really saved the story for me leaving me interested to see what happens to the characters in the future.
Yeah, the ending of the book is a big part of why I'm still interested in continuing with the series. If it makes you feel any better about posting your review tomorrow, I was actually relieved to see your original comment. I thought that it was nice for me to see someone else who thought that the book was okay, but that it didn't live up to all of the hype for them either. :)
Aside from all of the hype for The Cruel Prince that I came across online (especially on Goodreads) prior to reading the book, I think at least a part of why I ended up not loving The Cruel Prince as much as I was hoping to is because I was/am really excited about all of the other books in my February T.B.R. However, I also wanted to try my best to finish reading the book before OwlCrate's OwlBabble with Holly Black, which is tomorrow. In order to accomplish that goal, The Cruel Prince had to be the first book that I read in February before I could read all of the other books that I'm excited to read this month. I think that on some level that ultimately made reading The Cruel Prince seem more like something on my To-Do list that I needed to cross off before I could do the things that I was really excited about; which in this case is read all of the other books in my primarily romance genre themed February T.B.R. To be fair, I did start out really enjoying The Cruel Prince. It wasn't until I was fairly far into the book that reading The Cruel Prince started to feel like more of a chore; and not something that I was doing for fun, which is why I usually love to read in the first place. I'm definitely wondering if I would end up liking The Cruel Prince more if I were to read it again at some point in the future, but at a more leisurely pace where I didn't have a specific date that I was trying to finish it by. It's possible that even if I read The Cruel Prince again at some point, only at a slower pace, that I would still end up feeling like the book simply didn't live up to the hype for me, but that's definitely something that I've been thinking about. By the way, I forgot to mention in my first comment that even though I didn't like the book as much as I was hoping to, I still really enjoyed your review of The Cruel Prince, Heather. :)
I am always scared to read hyped books.Sometimes the hype sets the bar too high and i have been disappointed by some overhyped books in the past. But I am happy you liked this book and I am looking forward to reading it.
I'm so happy you liked this! I feel like this book has been so hyped, and it really disappointed me. I think my problem was that I really dislike fae books.
I just finished this today, and absolutely LOVED it! I hated that Cardan had to be such a jerk to hide how he really felt for Jude, and even Nicasia. Valerian had what had happened to him coming. There were a couple plot twists that I didn't see coming, including who was put on the throne at the end. Taryn betraying Jude with the guy that Jude was with was not something expected. I had a feeling, when Jude found the page with nothing but her name, that Cardan was not actually angry with her. He was kind of predictable. Bullies pick on the people they like, even if it is wrong. I rated this a 5 out of 5 stars too.
I really liked it. I gave it a four on goodreads. My only issue is that the main character makes annoying decisions and she risks herself, her plans and other character's lives selfishly. Jude is way too rash and she got away unharmed too often. So it was a bit unbelievable. I still liked it though. Fae stories are interesting in general. I can tell Holly Black and Cassandra Clare have similar writing styles which I love

I understand your opinion completely! Hype is so weird with books and it does effect your views on it as much as I hate to admit but it happens
