I grew up in Rensselaerville in the 50's & 60's..The beauty of the village & Huyck Preserve provided me with an appreciation of nature. The warmth of neighbors provided me with a powerful example of what "community" means. I am proud to be a "Rensselaervillian" and feel blessed that I had the opportunity. Growing
Great short film. And an overlooked important part of American History. My Great Great Grandfather was George McKeel. He was an Anti-Rent Calico Indian that was convicted in the 1845 trials. He was run out of the state of New York and took his bride to be to Northern Illinois, where they started a family in the 1850s, 100mi northwest of Chicago at Polo, IL.
Your ancestor did a great service to our nation and made a huge risk fighting along side my ancestor, Smith Azer Boughton. They both risked their own lives to fight for what was right and equal, just as the continental army under General George Washington did previously. May the glory of the brave 700 and the eternal bond they share be remembered throughout the ages.
Glory to my fellow brave new englander men, who in the early days slept against walls with rifles loaded, plowed fields by hand and through blood and sweat of their own making, built this great and glorious Hudson valley. Our home handed down through the generations by right of proving. These lands are in our soul when we are born in our great valley we call home, it is the valley to which we will return once we die. Eternal glory to the Calico’s, the brave 700 of Helderberg Mountain and all of the men and women who built this nation, right in our very own back yards.
very interesting & well made, I couldn’t help wondering though since he lost his father at age 5 & he didn’t control his inheritance until age 21, why his upbringing by Elizabeth van Rensselaer & her husband Abraham Ten Broeck or any of their various activities regarding Stephen’s estate including the land, tenants etc. wasn’t mentioned or included in this history?
Thanks for watching! I made this when I was in college, so while I could have and maybe should have included more, I was still learning how to successfully put together a good video let alone documentary. I was happy with the way it came out, but there will always be something you miss or could have added. But thank you, I appreciate the feedback!

I'm staying in an old house right now in Rennselarville, and I'm terrified of ghosts now because of this documentary.

I grew up in westerlo, used to ride my bike 10 miles just to go to the only library around it was in rennselearville
Interesting. The music was a little too loud in spots making it hard to hear the narrative though.
Susan Deters Sorry about that! It was one of my first videos I made when I was in college. Thanks for watching!
David Thomas I still enjoyed it. I've lived in Rensselaerville for about 25 years now and didn't know a lot of this.
Susan Deters glad you enjoyed it
