    Landscape design tips:
    - Do not do any big projects until you've lived with your garden for 1 full year and have seen your garden in all 4 seasons.
    - Design an intentional “path” - one that is realistic about where somebody will naturally end up if they were to move through your garden.
    - Repetition is your friend.
    - 3/5/8 is a great ratio to keep in mind when figuring out roughly how many individual trees/shrubs/perennials to plant.
Specifically if you want to make your garden low maintenance:
    1. Plant more flowering evergreens and fewer herbaceous perennials or annuals.
    2. Reduce or eliminate containers in your garden. Plant directly into the ground instead.
    3. Mulch.

    • @charlygodwin
      @charlygodwin 10 месяцев назад

Oh, and don't stress so much about timing. Dividing can be done on any cool day regardless of season, and honestly any time the ground isn't frozen, you can plant things. Seriously.

Yes! Especially the seeing what it does in a year! I’ve wasted a lot of money on new (to me) gardens at different residences bcuz they didn’t have the same light as a past garden or whatever it may be, and I assumed it would. 😅 I’ve learned a lot of lessons doing outdoor gardening. I usually hold back a little every year bcuz a lot of plants take up way more space than I think then I end up with a crazy jungle.

Can relate on the kids topic-don’t have any, have never wanted any, and will not have any. My husband feels and has felt the same way since before we dated.
I actually had a refreshing encounter with a 70 something gentleman in the gym. He was also childless. Told me his story, that of his family, etc. and the take away point was “There is more to life than having children, do what you enjoy, take care of yourself, and live whatever life is best for you.”
It’s a difficult thing for many people to accept, and it was so cool, hearing that from someone who you know lived in a time where it was even more frowned upon.
    Thanks for the video, Fern!💚

Would recommend adding a native plant garden to your landscaping if you have the space. You can look up deer-resistant species of you're worried about that. You can also plant some natives in containers/a raised bed if you'd prefer!
I fell down the rabbit hole of native plants year before last and have added 7 or 8 species in pots.

Yes, your Hoya watering tip is so true! I always water them just when the potting mix dries out. I don't wait any longer, and I have heard some crazy caring routines, like one girl watering every 5 weeks, which is insane. Hoyas can then develop dry rot, and I don't want to risk that. But they are also such hardy plants - so nice species; when you are due to water and you stretch it for a few days, they will be fine :) and I appreciate it so much.

The first step of landscaping that is necessary in prepping your yard is clean up! Make sure you go through and clean out ANYTHING you don’t want. I’ve always had wood but mine are broken down at this point and need replacing this season. I really like the trough raised beds! It’s a great asthetic but I feel like the main issue with those is how deep they are. You need sooooo much substrate to fill the bottom. A lot of people use foliage debris like leaves and bush cuttings to fill it half way before adding soils.

When I first got her, she wasn't in a bright area...about 8 feet away from the window and she lost a ton of leaves...especially bottom ones. They were yellowing off and dropping like flies! I moved her right next to the west facing window and she HATES being watered! I water her literally about every 3-4 weeks and shes shooting out new growth all over the place, including new growth on the bottoms, filling in the empty areas. Shes over 4ft tall and putting out new growth on the constant!

Part of that 3.4% from Australia 🇦🇺 ❤️
As for outdoor gardening, Id get seedlings to start rather than grow from seeds for your first year. I wouldn’t stress too much about the dates- it’s more temperature and daylight length which can vary year to year but plants will still grow. I don’t know what it’s like to have a winter where you can’t grow outdoors (this summer has been so horrible for outdoor growing- so hot and so many bugs) but don’t put too much pressure on yourself with planting by X date. As long as the general temperatures are where they need to be so they don’t get cold damage etc.
Thank you for being you always bringing the best vibes. So calming and relatable.

Your cactus question- to avoid etiolated growth when wintering over, I find you need high intensity grow lights or a hot south facing window to provide as much light as possible. Then only water when they begin to shrivel (this is approx once a month depending on the size/variety). Long stringy growth is a sign you are providing too much water and too little light. Certain varieties, I can winter over in low light. But most do best with as much light as you can manage even when dormant.
I find the biggest set back of growing desert plants in cold dark environments is providing sufficient light when dormant. That and mealy bugs lol.

I use qtips and or dunk the leaves in the soapy water until it’s Suddsy. BUT I rinse it off directly after otherwise it could potentially burn the leaves. I also use the qtips after down the center of the leaf. I’ve noticed if I have flat mites that orange shows up on the qtip. Hope that helps

I forgot to add in my other comment about your cactus in the basement. I’m not an expert, but I have 15 cactus in my collection and I do not go by the same rules of the outdoor cactuses that are friends online share with us. Indoor cactuses are not outdoor cactuses. Most of our cactus friends that have outdoor cactuses keep them in a greenhouse all year round at least the ones that can handle 40°F and above and they still get proper sun throughout the year, so there’s do not etiolate. Cactuscaffeine a friend here also on RUclips brings her cactuses inside and she always has them under Grow lights all winter.
This is my first winter with my cactuses so I’m not saying I know or have all the answers, but they are doing great under all these grow lights and I still water them during the winter months too. So, i believe that is the reason why yours is etiolating all cactuses have to have light and proper light all year around. Good luck, and thanks again for your videos!

A good way to sell your propagations would be to sell them as a lot of either the same plant or a mixer of plants that would possibly make it with it

35 here from Chicago! I’m one of your male viewers. What can I say, you’re kind of a icon around here. I wore my Wild Fern sweatshirt to a gay bar and I met another follower. 😂😂🌈 The other day I caught myself walking around singing your credits song and I don’t even know it. 🤣🤣 You already know your my fave. Cactus lover here. I brought all my cactus inside (my house stays around 64 because I hate when it’s too hot). I added a grow light to my cactus but I think my mistake was that I watered and my monkey tail and boobie got etiolated. The rest of my mature cactus seem ok but next year I will stop watering and keep them in my enclosed patio (which will sit at about 55). In order for them to go dormant you need to stop watering around October and at 55 degrees. All we can do is try again next year.

I was following my own planty endeavors for part of it, full disclosure, but I nevertheless was always listening and I picked up a fair amount of knowledge, as usual, so thanks for letting us hang out with you. Also I've not read Song of Achilles yet but Circe by the same author is one of my favorite newer books, the short story Galatea is also very good. Anyway, cheers Fern thanks so much for what you do. @@wildfern It's not as flavorful as I expected. I might need to crush it a bit to pull more flavor out. As far as your demographics go, I am an American, but I'm 57. I have 5 kids. They range in age from 36 to 18. I was in nursing school but felt the need to quit when my youngest son got seriously sick. He's fine now. I'm glad you really liked nursing school. After living off and on in hospitals for 7 years, I definitely wanted nothing to do with hospitals ever again. Some people have the opposite reaction. I'm a happy homebody introvert. And I love my family, cats and gardening inside and outside 😁
