Just seen your video, am trying to find info on those tillers. I picked up one exactly like it but branded Yardman. Putting an 8 hp Tecumseh snowblower motor on it. Any tips you can give on this old beast would be much appreciated
The old tillers are made a lot better than the new ones. My Briggs engine is over 20 years old on my tiller and it is on its second frame. Only thing I have replaced on it has been a little rubber elbow that vents to the carb. Liked when the tiller fired up and breathed life for another season. Just build up the shaft with a welder then grind it down round again don't need to be perfect just has to be close no need to disassemble tiller or anything
If you still haven't repaired the shaft, try using JBWeld. Put it around the shaft and inside the tube and try to center on the shaft with the pin in place. I've done it with commercial mowers on the spindles. The key broke in the key way and wore the shaft and pulley. Used the same technique, to get by until I could replace the spindle and pulley.
Hey Pete, It's seems like we all like to run a little late. I still need to build a few raised beds and plant them. I hate it when jobs go like this, but it seems like more of them are like this than are not. I like the hat. Great job.

I agree with Thomas below, the shaft can be welded back up to what is needed to make the tine fit properly. If the tine is wore out inside then it will need repair as well. Check if the gear box is grease or oil, after many years it may also need service.
We have to do the same thing here. We have an older tiller in a shed that came with the house and we haven't used it the 5 years we've been here. Curious if I can get it running.
Hi Pete, would you be so kind to write down the model number of your tiller? I have a Montgomery Ward 8 HP 5 Speed tiller that looks just like yours and as far as I know, MTD made it for Wards. So far nobody was able to find a parts diagram for it, so I'd like to see if the MTD's number would help. I've seen the plate for a glimpse, its above the tines. Thanks.
MTD use to make good quality equipment and machines back decades ago. Unlike now, MTD makes fairly low quality machines and equipment. My father has a 40 year old MTD rototiller ( 5 hp ) and it is built like a Sherman tank.
Pete...I know you upgraded camera(s)...If you don't mind my asking, what are you using now? And what video editor? The video is glitching and I can't tell if its camera or video editing software.
I just use an iPhone 6 and use iMovie to edit the videos. The little glitches you’re talking about are probably just bad splice points. I’m not good at doing it in one take. It gets better as I go on
If you have a PC or a laptop give ShotCut a try. Its about as good as free video editors get unless you want to spend a good bit on hardware to run DaVinci Resolve.
@@cheaphomesteading I've got one of these that my Grandfather bought back in the early 80s, the last time it was used before I got it was 1990...dad passed in 2010 and I brought it home. It had sat in a shed since then, protected from the elements and such, but the flywheel still had to come off so I could use emery cloth to clean it up so that the magneto would fire...after that a new plug and some gasoline, it was good to go! The first thing that went wrong was a belt disintegrated, easy fix lol... ...I used it for five years but it was so worn out the plug would foul out after a couple hours. I can't bear to part with it and mine needs a rebuild too...I've been putting it off because life happens but the urge to have a garden has hit me again. Glad to see someone still using these! It really makes getting the dirt turned over soooo much easier than the old Otasco type front tine things (I've got one of those too, but replaced the B&S 2.5 with a Subaru OHV 7hp...a rat rod tiller, but it tries to pull me around the garden). Did you ever get around to rebuilding?

Have pretty much the exact same one. Motor is flipped over though. We call it tillzilla
