  • Virtual idols are popping up left and right now more than ever but they've had a surprisingly long history.

Great video! I think a bigger issue within the kpop scene is whenever companies adopt pop culture genres for concepts and putting out a bland, uninspired replica.
If they’re serious about virtual idols then they need to put more time and effort into creative direction.

Yeah, it's hard to be excited about virtual idols when so far, everything that they do looks so much less interesting than what Gorillaz did 20 years ago. Ultimately, it doesn't matter how far the technology comes - a cynical and uninspired cash grab will look just as bad.

The company’s behind these idols don’t care about making them innovative, all they care about is money and the “hype” of the meta verse. There’s a huge disconnect from what the audience wants

yeah I need the companies to let their creatives go crazy with this concept of "virtual idols" cause only making them a digital copy of a real singer isn't offering much :/

the new virtual k-idols lack uniqueness in character design and lore. The kpop companies aspiring to create virtual idols should looks to Japanese games and animation. It shouldn't just be pretty, it needs to suck viewers into the world and story.
I noted the similarities with ff x-2 opening too and still came out preferring ff x-2 opening, despite it being 2 decades old, because it was grounded in story telling and had overall better direction. It's still iconic for a reason.
mave has potential in that the singers, the song and the chorography are all great imo. The song especially is very catchy. Ironically the animation aspect is holding them back.

as an animator, I totally agree with you, but what happens with most companies, in my opinion, is that they're in a testing phase, like they don't want to spend too much on this until they're sure it's going to give them something big in return, at least the big companies. Small companies on the other hand simply don't have enough resources to do everything perfectly, this group superkind, the project they talk about is actually unlike anything I've seen in the kpop industry, but then again they are from a small company so not everything can be done yet, but looking at the details they are really trying something new.. it's interesting, but like you said they need to be more open to going crazy with the looks and the animations, yk or they won't stand out anyway

What virtual kpop idols can guarantee:
They will never want to date, so the parasocial fantasy can be sold much easily. The agency has complete and total control over the virtual idol. I think once AI and robotics technology gets more advanced, we would see more of such groups.
