At the beginning of his show he interrogates members of the audience to find out their names and jobs. Amazingly he remembers them and refers back to them.
It must be mentioned that this a character. The character is a caricature of an English pub landlord who are stereotypically very opinionated, outspoken and incredibly patriotic
Both those clips were his Pub Landlord persona. He is playing the part of a very nationalist, opinionated, somewhat sexist "bar" host. He has a pop at everyone, even himself. The main thing is he has the smarts to back it up. He has an interest in military history & has presented or co-hosted several series on the subject.
@ronanmcw He literally has a history degree, having read modern history at Oxford, and is considered a prominent British military historian, who has had multiple bestsellers.
I think that's part of the brilliance. He acts like salt of the earth, but with the education to pull it off. The other part is that his best punchlines are delivered almost as afterthought, which is a brilliant effect.
@herstoryanimated wasnt he a school teacher too, was a breath of fresh air Al Murray around just after Father ted, Vic reeves and bob mortimer, the Office. Some great TV comedy we had back then
@afrog2666 Yeah, just like the Roman Empire, eh? And if you want to get properly serious because you don't do comedy (apparently), read your Juvenal, or even Gibbon.
Yep, his "Name a country... We have defeated them." skit is another masterclass in learning geography by stealth and how quick he is with his responses and quips. Awesome!
The best thing about his live shows is that they're all different as he does so much crowd work, getting to know his audience each time and drawing them into his show. You were watching him as the Pub Landlord. That's his alter ego.
As a British person I loved watching him again with you. I not laughed so hard in ages. SUBSCRIBED!!! YOU ARE GREAT I've many American friends and I've shared it with them
Yes to a part 2 as this is one of your best reactions ever due to you being highly entertained by his performance. 'Name a country, we've defeated them' is particularly funny video of his.
I had the honour of being a best man @ a friend’s wedding! Many years ago now…. The speech was done in the style of the pub landlord! Thank you Mr Murray for your inspiration! Much love from England 🏴 Great reaction! XXX
there was a tv show "time gentleman please". he even had a chat show. Seen him once was cry i laughed so hard. havd classic skits such a who uk beat in wars
You loved it because you seem very intellectual, my first time watching your channel and absolutely enjoyed your reaction, it was adorable watching you crack up to Mr Murray.... you got me hooked on you. Thanks for cheering me up on a dark wet winter month...❤❤❤
Glad you enjoyed Al`s performance, I thought it might interest you to see where a certain Bear started Tv stardom. see :- Paddington Bear - The Complete Original Series 1 Min video (showing work done to improve the quality of the original small films.)
it was meant to be, me seeing your videos for the first time, you clicked on Ipswich, of all places, to view ticket prices and i live just outside Ipswich lol
English here ,love my Americans over the pond. Laughing my belly out watching this, my jaw aches and im crying. this was a good decade in Britain when Al was on TV. the British classic comedy isnt the same today sadly it used to take the piss out of politics, race, people, countries, ourselves but tday we would be arrested. Comedy is in severe last throws of death now to be replaced with a nation of negative programs, media and News. Your channel just saved a small part of me showing this. RESPECT LOL : )
You need to watch the whole of the Nations Of The World video as there were some really good bits you missed, such as Papua New Guinea, which he calls Papa's Got A Brand New Guinea.
Language drift can be pretty interesting… Travel used to be more difficult and so unique dialects could develop within different towns and such… With stuff like colonisation, sometimes colonists would come from different areas and you might get it transplanted to a certain area… Or maybe a unique blend of others… In some cases with other languages… Meanwhile, sometimes the stuff they bring over to a new land can fall out of fashion in the root country… Some of it happens far enough apart that new things are created and the different people independently come up with different names for things… Something America did change deliberately though, was simplifying a bunch of spellings… Like taking “u”s out of many words… Many words with “re” like Centre, were changed to “er”… Which kinda makes sense… …Then the weird thing now is that now other versions of English become popular through media or immigration from those countries and such… Next thing you know, our version of English can be influenced by the other… It’s kinda crazy… Anyway, if I remember correctly, technically Soccer is an English word (as in I believe it was created in England), for the purpose of differentiating it from Rugby Football… Soccer was a nickname for Association Football, I think… But yeah, we realised it was a stupid name and it didn’t catch on here lol, like most of the world… Possibly because it was the more popular version of football? I’m not sure… For whatever reason America adopted Soccer though… They liked their hand-egg sport more, I guess… Weirdos lol (I’m just teasing… I mean Americans are weird, but a lot of us are, in our own ways).
In the 1st video, the guy he talks to, part way though, is Steve Jones, guitarist of the "Sex Pistols", who did a song called "God Save the Queen" in 1977.
New here, seen these, but this was defo worth it for your reaction, I know some things but surely already 163 comments around this one, they'll tell you about this but you looked him up at the end there anyway so that's great, not many do that, for sure on board for more!
Great reaction to Al Murray Susy and so funny.😂Next, check out his "All Jobs Are Terrible" and "How Global Finance works" and "Al Murray - Every parent must watch this" which are all so hilarious.😅 Also, please react to more of Mickey Flanagan who is from the East End of London and his accent is a typical working-class "cockney rhyming slang." There are so many great stand-up comedy routines to explore from Micky Flanagan and a fantastic rabbit hole to dive down. Here are some hilarious stand-up comedy skits from Micky that are not compilations, but proper stand-up skits in a order where you can build up a relationship with his type of comedy: "Can I Come In Your House? | Micky Flanagan Live: The Out Out Tour" and "The Sh*ts Abroad! | Micky Flanagan Live: The Out Out Tour" (Delhi Belly 5 mins 17 secs 'this version') and "What Do Women Want? | Micky Flanagan: Back In The Game Live" and "Useless Men & Drunk Women | Micky Flanagan Live: The Out Out Tour" and "The Demise of F*ngering | Micky Flanagan Live: The Out Out Tour" and "To Catch a Peeper | Micky Flanagan Live: The Out Out Tour" all of which will have you Susy rolling in stitches of laughter.😅
I swear this guys brain is wired like an archive, and every time he says "The (insert nationality) are beautiful people" i cant help but wonder if that's a trigger phrase for memory recall.
Al Murray shows off his oxford history education in a video called "Name a country... We have defeated them."
Literally the most boring video he's done🤦♂️
and get it wrong, btw lol
@johnmullens2857 The only error I picked up on was Burkina Faso which was a French not German colony, did you catch any others? Genuinely interested.
@funb0b Holland, which is even just a part of the country. We even spanked THEM a time or two lol
At the beginning of his show he interrogates members of the audience to find out their names and jobs. Amazingly he remembers them and refers back to them.
One of the only Americans to get the "don't matter who comes first when you're on your own" joke. 😂😂
Think she might be a Canadian. She seemed to respond to him mentioning Canada.
@templetonpeck393 27:15 My money is on Venezuela.
How Global Finance works is a very funny sketch and a must watch
In under half a pint, mind you!
It must be mentioned that this a character.
The character is a caricature of an English pub landlord who are stereotypically very opinionated, outspoken and incredibly patriotic
But alot of the time they are very funny and lovable
No a comedian is playing a character?!
Nooooo!! really? wow!! shook!! *eye roll*
"an interest" is underselling it - he has one of the leading podcasts on it and has contributed several WW2 books.
Some great TV comedy we had back then
@ScoopDogg Don't think so, was very vocal about not liking being sent to boarding school - so maybe that's the crossover 🤔
"Name a country... We have defeated them."
And now they`re being eaten from the inside just like the US, funny how "conquering" has consequences..
@afrog2666 Indeed.
Hey Frog? Cmon man!
Do try to take it as meant….. just comedy
@afrog2666 Yeah, just like the Roman Empire, eh? And if you want to get properly serious because you don't do comedy (apparently), read your Juvenal, or even Gibbon.
@afrog2666 you say it like we all did it. Your country isn't perfect either, princess
Peru is where Paddington bear is supposed to be from.
What do you mean supposed? 🧐
He is from Peru
Yes that was the joke
Yep, his "Name a country... We have defeated them." skit is another masterclass in learning geography by stealth and how quick he is with his responses and quips. Awesome!
Al Murray is brilliant.
Nobody does crowd work quite like Al. Nice to enjoy it with you.
Yes, yes, yes - please do a part two!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Al Murry has so much knowledge in his head its unbelievable... his comedy is based on truth
The best thing about his live shows is that they're all different as he does so much crowd work, getting to know his audience each time and drawing them into his show. You were watching him as the Pub Landlord. That's his alter ego.
Al Murry gets to know his audience when he first comes on, when he says to the guy i can see why you wanted the UK so much is because he is German
HIS BEST SKIT IS. HOW GLOBAL FINANCE WORKS, VERY VERY FUNNY WITH HIS AMERICAN ACCENTS 😊
Yep, for me this is his best work, but the rest of his stuff is fab too
Could I recommend: Al Murray’s All Jobs Are Terrible. This piece also includes how he also interacts with his audience.
Geography history lesson as by the British 😂
Pissed=drunk in the UK
As an Englishman drenched in piss... I appear to have been bamboozled
Pissed = normal state of being in the UK 🍻🥂🍷🍷🥃
@jwi1085💯 being pissed in America is about 7 or 8 pints... In England we call that breakfast
@LordCraig1and American pints are 20% smaller than a good old uk pint
@jwi1085thats right.... its only about 450ml (US 16 oz)
Al Murray is playing a character in this he is "The Pub Landlord"
Al Murray it's the greatest english historian; and i say this as spaniard (maybe i shouldn't say it.. idk.. ) i love him.
What a treasure. Al Murray live is unreal, you have to come and watch him 🙌

Went to see him live a few weeks ago…. Absolute legend 😂
Went to the Northampton gig on Friday, what a legend!
His routine of what Hell is like in different countries is hilarious / his act is what some pub landlords were like 60yrs ago it's quite accurate
31:18 ‘countries’ 💀
Al Murry is a VERY smart man - this is his most famous persona - the pub landlord.

Watch anything with Al Murray. He’s soooo good. 👍
Try reacting to Milton Jones one liners.

I have no beef with beef - if only this had been made a decade later
He's a highly intelligent historian in real life.
Can't believe you didn't realise that he was just showing the UK pub sense of humour ! We just take the piss out of everything 😂😂😂😂
He's a comedian dear. These are called jokes.
Check out Marcus Brigstocke & Dylan Moran brilliant stand up routines.
You need to watch the whole of the Nations Of The World video as there were some really good bits you missed, such as Papua New Guinea, which he calls Papa's Got A Brand New Guinea.
Good as gold.👌❤️🙏
First time watching you BUT you have to watch Al Murrays sitcom "Time Gentlemen Please" that this is based on. 100% you will love.
He is also a historian who has his own programmes on RUclips.

Good one. You should watch him explain global finance.
