A beautiful film revealing the true face of a wonderful man, Jorge Mario Bergoglio, who has inherited a difficult job which he is doing to the best of his ability. The Catholic Church has indeed been blessed to have found such a holy and gifted man, especially in these hard times for the people of the world and where so many key political leaders lack the moral fibre and ability to change things for the better. So well done Wim Wenders. You come across as a good man and completely fulfilled, maybe even exhausted, after your four years of work on this moving film.

I wonder how a learned man like Wim Wenders, an acknowledged "lefty", can be so naive to disregard the history of the Catholic Church and the history of Catholic dogmas... and to disregard even the history of one Jorge Mario Bergoglio himself... and to lend him his art to advertise the organization of the Catholic church as one of great hope, freedom, peace, boundlessness and dignity...! this organization which has brought so much misery and injustice into the world, and whose teachings are so very absurd and paradox, that no reasonable mind would ever accept them! Whose leaders belonged to the greatest exploiters and criminals of mankind and who have fought with lies against enlightenment, elucidation, knowledge, science, truth and realism... and who had only one purpose and aspiration: to keep control over the people of all nations wherever they could get in charge of... Wim Wenders really delivered himself as a true servant of this obscure organization as a propagandist and as the mouthpiece of the Vatican...! What he does is, to help Pope Francis to throw sand in the eyes of the people who watch this movie. And he does it for simply romantic reasons, because he wants to believe that this church and this pope could be a hope for a better world and a better future, although this organization has never done anything good for any people in this world. And now he wants also other people to debauch in this obscure belief! It's really unbelievable and mind-boggling, puzzling and most perplexing...! I doubt that he realizes what he's dipped into... and it really looks like he's completely unaware of the background of the Church and its fatal role for mankind. If you look at this picture with a skeptic critical mind, you realize that it's pure kitsch and naive, starry eyed credulity, a premature praise for a concept that has already outlived itself and proved itself to be absurd in the almost 2.000 years of its existence with its crude, obscure ideology and accumulating dogmas to explain itself. ... I would understand if he would have been some catholic boy brought up by pious godly parents studying Catholic theology... but I cannot accept him as a serious, sophisticated, left critic anymore. I am not against religion as such, but I think, the Catholicism would be the last ideology which I would ever recommend to anybody... they have lied to us for more than 1.800 years... and it seems to be rather a business idea, than a religion...! and it sure has nothing to do with true spirituality... it's just another sort of brainwash! Brainwash of 1.800 years! I am not amused! :((((

I'm rather perplexed what lies the Catholic Church has been foisting on humanity for the last 1800 years or so. Could you enlighten me with just a few?

That there is something like a "limbus"... a place where the children are kept which not have been baptized... Children are in terms of the Catholic Church "the most innocent beings" (on the one side only!) but they may not enter heaven when they are not baptized... so it is with every pagan...! Platon cannot enter heaven, 'cause he wasn't baptized. But why don't they even let the "innocent children" in...? (theoretically or theologically!) ...it's because every new born child is stained with the original sin... so... in the end, a new born child is not innocent, not immaculate at all... So I suggest to baptize the embryo before it is born and to install a ritual to get all these children baptized before they are aborted. Why didn't they already install such a ritual if baptizing is so important to become blessed and to enter heaven? Only a theologian, human mind can invent such a nonsense... not a divine entitiy! Anyway, in early christianity only adults have been baptized... and all the sacred rituals or "sacraments" of the Catholic church never existed among early Christians... they are all human inventions, not divine installations! But there are more inconsistencies... Wim Wenders was very naïve to let himself be misused by the pope as a mouthpiece for his crude, obscure organization...

This goes very well together with the dogma of the church "extra ecclesiam nulla salus" which the pope now fairly relativises... (and he is rebuked for this by his extra-traditional and extra-conservative catholic wing!) ...it means, whosoever is not a baptized Catholic cannot enter heaven... and who does not believe in this dogma is "maledictus" or cursed... So it happens that for the extreme circles in the traditional Catholic Church the last four to five popes after the 2nd Vatican concile are "maledictus" and not approved as true, real popes: John XXIII., John Paul I., John Paul II., pope Benedict XVI. and pope Francis just the same... they don't know at all what is right, neither the traditionalists nor the modernists... because they are thologians...! they are just playing with the people and making experiments... but have no significance for things that really matter... since about 2000 years... making politics and gathering money & wealth that's all they do!

Wow. Both of your replies have to do with the concept of Justification, which is commonly referred to as "being in the State of Sanctifying Grace".
Since Adam's fall, all of us are born into the world carrying the mark of original sin, and the three wounds of concupiscence of the eyes, of the flesh, and the pride of life. This is a supernatural reality. With the Original Sin Satan pulled all creation, including humanity, into his realm of sin and death. Before the dawn of our Lord Jesus Christ, men could find justification by living according to the natural law and having the hope or expectation of being redeemed by the Messiah. Since the coming of Our Lord Jesus Christ, and his command to "preach the Gospel to every creature. He who believes and is baptized will be saved..." it is necessary to have supernatural faith (knowledge of Our Lord Jesus Christ) and at least a DESIRE for baptism to be saved. The body of doctrines our Lord left the apostles before His ascension into heaven, and the teachings and traditions which those same apostles established before the death of St John the Evangelist- these are referred to as "The Deposit of Faith"- constitute the One, Holy, Universal (the word Catholic meaning the same thing) and Apostolic Church.
Unfortunately 99% of modern Catholics are confused about the papacy and the Vatican. First off the papacy was established by Our Lord Jesus Christ to safeguard the deposit of Faith- not to edit the ten commandments or bind the faithful to arbitrary dictates. While Peter made his way to Rome and established his Seat (Englishmen seem to have trouble translating the Latin Sancta Sedes, which means holy seat, and instead refer to the "Holy See") there such things as cardinals, papal elections, canon law, and etc were not established until centuries later. The pope could abolish all those things tomorrow, and the Church would still maintain its integrity.
Certainly the church has had its share of bad popes and bad bishops. But one would do wrong to confuse human shortcomings with the sublime work of the Holy Ghost.

I'm sorry, but I can't see anything working in the history of the church but a very unholy ghost of Mammon and Power and the spirit of unholiness par excellence... the church was a great error that has to be corrected by not supporting it anymore... it has nothing to do with God, it is politics, exploiting the people and lying to them. It is rather a business concept to make some people rich than a true religion.
