Great to find a UK based home DIY advice channel with every bit of info I need to tackle our home as first time owners planning to do everything ourselves outside of gas and electric. Subbed.👍
Bloody hell this vid means I can do it myself- I was really hoping to tell my wife it was beyond my dodgy DIY skills, so I need to get someone in- thanks guys for giving me work this weekend!
@@jonrogers1780Hey Jon! No, it'd be 44 again on the other side. This is because they measured the angle of their wall and it was 88 degrees (instead of the assumed 90 for most corners). I appreciate it's not super obvious because he used the tool that gave them a miter read-out. If he read out the protractor reading - it would have been 88. Hence - his lesson that not all corners are 90 degrees!
Just one tip I would add. To make the skirting easier to paint, I use a spacer (credit card depth) when fixing the skirting to create a 1/2mm gap above the flooring. Leaves enough room to run some masking tape around the perimeter (and just in, under the skirting) and saves a lot of cutting in where the skirting might be touching the floor.
Very informative video. I remember the days when I scrabbled about on the floor cutting butt and scribes before chop saws and I used a nobex hand saw. As you get older you find cutting the skirting on a pair of stools with a couple of scaffold boards spread across them saves your knees and back. Can’t say I ever worried about cutting the scribe to suit how it looked coming into the room as I always tried to cut the scribes on the right hand end as being right handed your coping saw is always in the same place when you need it. When house bashing I would measure each room on a floor and cut the whole lot in one go and then fix it all off at once as there is speed in repetitive actions. Do all the cutting then do all the fixing, but each persons works to what suits them. The video is ideal though for beginner DIYers so well done for simplifying the operation.
I watched loads of videos on how to lay flooring, yours was the best. I watched it twice and away I went. Same with the skirting. You guys give the precise right amount of info. The full on cockney accents defo add to it too. Well played lads.
Class video boys, top job! I need to do this in one of our rooms as the previous owners ripped off a whole length of skirting to fit a wardrobe, taking a chunk of plaster with it 🤦♂️😂
@@homeimprovements honestly, the list of botch jobs is endless, upside down door handles and wallpaper reattached with masking tape is just the start 😂
Would be good to see the prep of removing the skirt on an older house, i have a house built in the 30s, removing picture frames and skirt is a nightmare due to the old sand mix used on the interior brick
What length nails do you use in the nailer and what have you the depth usually set at? I have the same nailer but my nails never seem to go in far enough and just crumple up or they don't hold the skirting. Don't want to resort to going back to masonry nails
A DIY'er would get away with a manual mitre saw such as a Nobex saw. Would be good to show this option as a chop saw is a big commitment for some DIY'ers. Good video though!
Hi guys, any chance you can show how to do a transition from 170mm skirtingboard on the landing to the one on the staircase when you have a torus or ogee ?
Hi, is there a specific reason why you joined the long piece of skirting just inside the door, was the full length of the skirting not long enough? Or is there another reason, love the video, thanks for the tips
Great video. Bit confused when you say 'it looks like a 45 degree angle' were you referring to the corner angle, which would be 90 degrees or there abouts? And if the corner is below 90 degrees, then the miter would need to be more than 45 degrees?
When fitting skirting and it sticks out past the architrave I see a lot of people saying they bevel the skirting but when people ask what they mean they never reply so would you know what they mean.
Loving the tutorials guys. Im about to do my skirting boards on a porch extension. Ive an issue with one wall. Its where the new porch wall meets the existing house wall. The length is about 500mm. Its two external mitre joints. Unfortunately the new stretch of wall is angled back creating a gap of a fingers width. Ive removed the plaster from below but the gap remains. What would you guys do to reduce it whilst keeping the boards true? Cheers.
If one angle is 44, the other has to be 46 right? This wasn't in the video. Most mitre's go up to 45 only on the angle, so do you have to flip one of the skirting board when you cut it to get the smaller angle?
Your teaching people so fair play but i always take rads off as on mdf boards the cuts always show after a while. Also what's with spraying the glue on the external mitre, no no no
Handy tip: When scribing internal corners , instead of using a coping saw for the straight line.. Use a multi tool for the perfect straight neat cut ! 😮
Where did that nail gun come from? Wasnt in the start when showing us the tools needed. Wearing shorts to instal skirting is ridiculous. No professional carpenter would wear shorts unless he was also wearing knee pads
Watched it like 5 times The first scribing part you explained made no sense If we do a straight line that’s plumb because of the off cut we used Then once we 45 cut it we’ve lost the plumbness
the cuts near the radiators are wrong, they should be 45 degree cuts so yo get a cleaner and seamless finish. That does not look great at all. I always do 45 degree cuts and always get a almost perfect finish. Less cuts the better!
Always been told 45° cuts for a better bond and cleaner look 🤔 Anything less makes it more identified and prone to movement 😉 Include a gap below of 1-2mm for allowing easier painting as well as tension when knocked
Love the tool run down! I mitre even get round to doing this, if the jigsaw puzzles me I’ll just have to cope with it. The hammer part was banging too! thats it, no more promise😂 Thanks guys, another great vid

🤣🤣 we can give you a letter signed explaining there are some super hard parts we left out if you want signed of courses to make it legitimate 🤣💪🏼
Hi guys, on the external corner if it's 44 degrees, is the joining piece 46
Also what is your opinion on pvc skirting
@@jonrogers1780Hey Jon! No, it'd be 44 again on the other side.

@@raresghetau570I done skirting and architrave today for first time ever and wish I realised this from the beginning😂 I wasted so much
I'm going to need to watch this a few more times before I tackle an internal corner but I feel like I can do it myself now. Thank you !

Is it compulsory to paint it

Top job as usual 👍
Appreciate The support John ⭐️ have a great day
I hace started following you lads as I love the way you explain it all.
Great work
Glad to hear it thanks mate 👏🏼👏🏼
Brilliant as always love Saturday morning for these videos 😊

Just wondering why you cut/joined the long length of skirting against the wall when you didn't need to??
Thanks guys - much appreciated and well explained 👍
Glad you enjoyed it
Excellent video lads🎉
why did you do 22.5 on the scarf instead of 45s?
New subscriber. Very informative videos guys. Very well laid out process you show us. Top lads

One of the best tutorials I've seen.

Bloody brilliant video lads. I definitely need better tools though, no way I could decern between 45' and 44' with my chop saw 😂
🤣 we have one of those saws too don’t worry and thanks 😊💪🏼

Hi great video very instructional what's the make and name of the red angle finder thanks
Thanks it’s from a company called trig jig
what would recommend to use in USA instead of EVO-STIK Sticks Like Sh*t Adhesive? Thank you for grate video
A DIY'er would get away with a manual mitre saw such as a Nobex saw. Would be good to show this option as a chop saw is a big commitment for some DIY'ers. Good video though!
The old problem with plastered walls is they curl up the wall so usually need to chip off so the chopsaws got a chance to cut a 90° that fits
Hi guys, any chance you can show how to do a transition from 170mm skirtingboard on the landing to the one on the staircase when you have a torus or ogee ?
Ty
😊
I stopped scribing years ago i just do 45 cuts now unless walls crap
Hi, is there a specific reason why you joined the long piece of skirting just inside the door, was the full length of the skirting not long enough? Or is there another reason, love the video, thanks for the tips
Just down to lengths we had and thanks 😊
What about the expansion gap?
Top Vid Lads........

Would you like please to advise us about some good adhesive for fixing the skirting boards to the wall? Cheers
Ct1 grab and bond
Cheers
So why did you measure 1.4 mtr to rad pipe then cut it shorter?. Confused.
Great video. Bit confused when you say 'it looks like a 45 degree angle' were you referring to the corner angle, which would be 90 degrees or there abouts? And if the corner is below 90 degrees, then the miter would need to be more than 45 degrees?
I’m referring to the cuts so standard would be 45 degree but in fact it was 44 or 88 degrees 😊
Base boards. Sounds like something I’d ride into a rave
how did you cut your external mitres at 44 degrees? By setting the chop saw? Did you put the jig onto the blade to make sure it was at 44?
Just setting mitre saw to 44 😊
@@homeimprovements easy 😁 thanks for the reply!
When fitting skirting and it sticks out past the architrave I see a lot of people saying they bevel the skirting but when people ask what they mean they never reply so would you know what they mean.
Basically put an angle on the end to make it thinner 😊
Good work but not that standard especially at joint I dont want to see that line

You could plane some of the back on the skirting away 😊
Can you use the 16 gauge nailer into brick/block walls that are rendered and skimmed?
This are brick 😁 not recommended obviously but between us it works 🤣👍🏼
Nice one! Cheers lads!
So the external corner at 44° - do I cut each board at 22°?
Depends what gauge your using this gives us the mitre so if it reads 44° mitre we do 2x44°
Where did you get that style of skirting from? The one in the thumbnail?
Skirting world 😊
Why not hide the joint behind the right hand rad pipe
If I removed a 3 inch skirt how do I fit a 5 inch skirt when the plaster ran up to the top of the 3 inch skirt?
Get a bag of one coat plaster and use it to fill in the gap
If one angle is 44, the other has to be 46 right? This wasn't in the video. Most mitre's go up to 45 only on the angle, so do you have to flip one of the skirting board when you cut it to get the smaller angle?
No not necessarily
Why do you do your mitre cut where it meets the rad pipe?? Is it to hide the joint behind the pipe??
😊👍🏼
It doesnt look directly behind the pipe tho! it looks off centre to the left of the pipe unless my eyes are lying??
You guys are the dog's b....ks 👌 Thank a LOT!! 👍
You are so kind
Your teaching people so fair play but i always take rads off as on mdf boards the cuts always show after a while.
Also what's with spraying the glue on the external mitre, no no no
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
how can i re gloss skirting boards with existing carpet??
Masking tape and tuck using a card
@@homeimprovements thank you
What if the wall is concrete or brick?
Are you two twins ?…..If not you’re doing a good job of impersonating each other 😊
Brothers 😊😊
Why not put the skirt on in one piece?
why is the angle 22.5? why is it not 45 degrees?
Not sure what your referring to mate
You say 16 gauge nails but not what length to use?
Around 32mm on brick/block walls 😊
Brilliant video guys, put across in really simple terms. Will definitely be referencing back to this when I do my house.
Top video and have subscribed
Awesome, thank you! 😊👏🏼
Handy tip: When scribing internal corners , instead of using a coping saw for the straight line.. Use a multi tool for the perfect straight neat cut ! 😮
Your definitely a sparky 😂😂
I've done it in 3 rooms using a simple 5$ saw. The first room was done horribly. That happened because I wasn't following you guys.
Yeah… I’m gonna pay someone to do it.
Where did that nail gun come from? Wasnt in the start when showing us the tools needed.

Agreed, I know em as weather cuts. But yeah, a 45° splice
If you do 45% cuts how do you manage to do less cuts then ??? Still need two cuts.😂😂 45% isn’t wrong …..it’s just different
Agree rad joint looked awful 45 best stopped watching after that
Always been told 45° cuts for a better bond and cleaner look 🤔

I would add knee pads :)
why not just cut 45 degree of internal corners lol...
Steph curry on the boards
When are sleeve tattoos gonna stop being a thing. I can't get over how easy it is to make ppl follow fads
Looks a piece of piss on modern, square, flat walls. Old wonky Victorian houses are fun and games!
I wasn't convinced when you didn't do 45's for the corners. But I was proved wrong. GG WP haha. Thanks for the vid.
Camera work was too poor for my amateur self to see and understand it fully

Should've mentioned the gun then you'd have truly nailed it. Great to ( mitre ) "bond" through jokes too.
very professional teaching 😎👍
Thank you! 😃
On an corner if u mitred 44° do u do the other at 44 or do u have to do the second at 46° to make it up to 90°
Not if it’s not a 90° corner 😊
