      Dang Ziggy, your video’s making me pull my Rider 17 out of the three ft tall weeds next door and get it, and myself, back in the water where it should be. Got busy with building a house way down here in Mexico right on the Tropic of Cancer and left my girl in the weeds way too long. I’m 74 and she’s my first and probably last boat I’ll ever own. Just learning this sailing thang that you do so effortlessly. Great boat for old guy like me to learn to sail on. Love your down home vids Zig. Michael in Mex.

    Ziggy, This is Lee Boone. I have been wanting to do the Texas 200, and you have inspired me. I have purchased a windrider17. I will be getting used to it over the next few months. Hopefully I can join you for the Texas 200 next year.

    Those runways look like a good place to play with a land sail.
    Can't wait to get my WR16 wet.
    I've had it for a couple months but haven't had a chance to take it anywhere.

    Hi again Ziggy, as ever, an awesome video my friend. I bought my WR17 in the UK winter time and am now chomping at the bit to get out there. Before I do, I want to rig her with some home comforts so, please let me know what size battery and, where to install so it doesnt interfere with handling and any ballast issues. Also, what size solar panel and controller do you rig up?
    Finally, is there such a thing as a rigging guide that I can purchase so I can get all my wires, lines and halyards in the correct position so when I launch, Im not fumbling (well, not too much anyway) with a boat that is uncontrollable. The guy I bought the boat from was not really clued up about rigging her despite him saying hed had it from new. Ive repaired the jib sail, Im getting a sacrificial strip put on it, Ive bought the gear to install lazy jacks on the main and, am just awaiting the supply of ` new mast base (mine is slightly best and got a hairline crack). Keep up the great work Ziggy, Ive subscribed to your channel man.

    Great video! Awesome set up! Question, what material is your boat made of? Did you bottom paint hills and if so what did you use?
    I sail a Hobie adventure island and was trying to figure out if I can bottom paint.
    Thanks!😊

      polywhatever like a kayak. tape off the area you want to bottom paint, scuff up the surface with fine sandpaper then spray on "adhesive promoter". it's used to paint plastic bumpers on cars. follow the directions them paint with bottom paint. amazon link to the primer. a.co/d/aDoRL5T have fun, thanks for the shout, Zig

    I think I need to move to Texas 😄. Where do I find wind riders? Website looks defunct.

    • @ZiggyLavengood
      @ZiggyLavengood  3 года назад +1

      The company's hull manufacturer is having issues and Windrider is actively searching for a new place to have the molds done. So right now you have to watch for used ones.
      There is a Windrider FB page that ppl post ones for sale once in a while. The windrider 16 and parts for the 17 are still available through the company by their business partners Nickels boatworks.
      www.nickelsboatworks.com/collections/sailboats
      Keep your ears open and they come up on Craigslist now and then., thanks for the shout out, Zig

    Please show us how that tent fits on your boat. Do you sleep IN the front "berth" ? Does the boat need to be modifided to accommodate the tent? Each summer my yacht club sponsers two or three over night "camp outs" Their boats all have cabins. ( V berths, galleys, heads ) I would really like to join the party. Would your tent let me do that? Thanks,Tom

    • @ZiggyLavengood
      @ZiggyLavengood  3 года назад

      That's a good idea. I'll do a video of how it all works.
      I sleep in the front cockpit and my gear stacks on the port plank under the back of the tent.
      I'll post a video in a week or two on it . Its a breeze to set up in shallow water where you can walk around the boat.. a little tricky (at least for a fat guy in his 60s) to set up at a dock where you have to stay on the boat. thanks

    The wind rider 17 really is a hell of a rig have you ever considered installing a dagger board for upwind performance?

    • @ZiggyLavengood
      @ZiggyLavengood  8 месяцев назад +1

      Ppl have tried it with mixed results. When talking to Jim Brown, the WR designer he suggested against it. Some sort of Lee board system wouldn't be too hard to put together though.

    Cool tent setup. What support did you have under the tent?

    • @ZiggyLavengood
      @ZiggyLavengood  3 года назад

      It lays across the 2x10s i have on each side of the boat for benches..
      In the middle I have cut a hole about 5 or 6 inches smaller than the front cockpit opening and use an elastic cord to pinch it around the opening like a kayak soft cover. I can stack gear on the backside of the tent supported by the bench and I can sit on the other bench. Since the floor of the tent is just a weather seal it's not that critical what it lays over..

We JUST hooked up the fixed mount VHF radio with AIS and this weekend gonna tie into the chartplotter so we can see if any of those big boats will be on our plot ahead of meeting them. The amount of water they suck out and push back in can really affect smaller boats, so better to know in advance of that ordeal....or adventure depending on our attitude at the time :)
